In the beautiful shore of Black Sea, OdessaThere is a group of lovely studentsThey are learning Chinese language and cultureAnd expressing their love for Chinese language through the most beautiful singing
\"The white sun sets behind the mountains, and the Yellow River flows intothe sea. To see a thousand mile view, go up another floor.\" In the classroomof the Confucius Institute at South Ukrainian National Pedagogical Univer-sity, the beautiful melody was heard. The accompaniment of Chinese zithersounded like spring water with the sound of ding-dong. The sound of thepiano was clear and elegant. The students were singing the ancient poemClimbing White Stork Tower, performing an appealing chorus in both Chineseand Russian.
When starting learning this song, the teacherplayed the original version and explained the ar-tistic conception of the poem at the same time:the poem describes the scenes on the top ofWhite Stork Tower and expresses the poet's ex-pectations for life and future. To see farther andenj oy more beautiful views, we should stand ona higher ground.
Afrer understanding the connotation of thepoem, the students were fonder of the simpleand vacant melody of the song, becoming ac-quainted to the song very quickly. When per-forming the chorus, the Chinese teacher playedChinese zither to accompany the Chinese poemwith profound meaning. The students of gradetwo played the piano, adding musical notes tothe elegant Russian singing. The students wereimmersed in the world of music and poemquickly, singing the thythm they loved in twolanguages.
They were very excited: \"To learn a languagewell, learners have to accept the language fromthe heart and learn to discover irs beaury andpleasure. Singing Chinese songs helps us learnwith a light heart.\"
Yana and Coska are grade one studentsmajoring in Chinese language. Working veryhard, they make great progress in less thanone year. The teacher told Yana that her namesounds like Athena, goddess of wisdom. Shewas very happy to hear this and said shewould work harder to be armed with morewisdom.
For many learners of Chinese language, every part in the learning, including tone(pitch of voice), Chinese characters andgrammar, is not easy. Due to the differencesin language forms, they are confronted withquite a few diffculties in learning Chinesecharacters. Like a long march of thousands ofmiles, Chinese characters learning starts fromthe strokes of Chinese characters, requiringdiligent efforts and unremitting practice inevery step.
Regarding homework, besides the home-work assigned by the teachers, Yana volun-tarily adds more work. After the completionof the Chinese character practice after class, she will also write one more page of Chinesecharacters. In classroom, she likes to raisequestions and figures out word collo catio ns asmany as possible and then seeks confirmationfrom the teachers.
It is diligence and inquisitiveness that at-tribute to their rapid progress. Starting fromzero, they can now communicate in Chinesein daily life. They can even help the teachersorganize various activities.
Besides language, they are also inter-ested in Chinese culture. They may ask thenumbers the Chinese people like and therelevant consonant association, such as 666and 888. Every time they learn the wordsof cultural image, such as Spring Festival, calligraphy, the Forbidden Ciry, Chinesestyles of cooking, etc., they would alwaysmake a thorough investigation and then ap-ply what they have learned.
This week, they learned Chinese food, and they went to the local Chinese restau-rants immediately after class for Chinesecuisines. They learn the language and feelthe feeling with their taste bud. In theirown word, \"Chinese language is my tel-escopes, with which I can see the remoteChina more clearly.\"
Language is a bridge for communica-tion. In recent years, Chinese culture andlanguage craze has become increasinglypopular in Ukraine. In the ConfuciusInstitute at South Ukrainian NationalPedagogical University and its over 20teaching sites, the amount oflearners ofChinese language exceeds one thousandevery year. After more than one year's learn-ing, students majoring in Chinese languageget the opportunity to obrain scholarshipsand pursue further studies in China. Afterreturning their motherland, some studentsbecame local Chinese language teachers;some pursued further studies; some workedin Chinese-funded enterprises in China orother countries and regions, being hired byairlines, trading companies, and companiesin other sectors.
China's development offers more oppor-tunities to all people who are proficient inChinese language. Nowadays, the studentsare enthusiastic in Chinese language andculture, associating their own dreams withthe bright future.
All people have their own goals of fu-ture learning. Yana and Coska want towork harder so as to pass the HSK Level IIIexamination and taste more Chinese food.Teresa and other students who are to studyin China want to make use of this valuableopportunity to improve their Chinese pro-ficiency so as to learn about China's historyand culture.lndeed, learning Chinese lan-guage and culture is like climbing a peak.Only by holding on to the last, can oneappreciate its beauty.
Rising and falling in cadence; powerfulwords of every Chinese characters; refinedarticles and paintings; crossed white andblack; lofry mountains and flowing water;traditional stringed and woodwind instru-ments …… China and Chinese culture are likea land of treasure. The students are tryingtheir best to understand every part of it.
