Task 1

The Schirn Kunsthalle museum recently issued an open call inviting designers both professional and amateur to design new images that communicate the concept of peace.

“We feel it is time for a new peace logo(徽標),” Philipp Demandt, the director of the museum, wrote in the invitation.“A logo for today that reflects our current concept of peace.”The hunt for the next peace sign comes in conjunction with the exhibition “PEACE”on view at the museum this summer.

The current peace sign symbol was created in 1958 for the first Aldermaston March,a demonstration calling for nuclear disarmament(核裁軍).Among the people who marched over 50 miles was Gerald Holtom,a designer and art school graduate. Many, many people raised original,politically-charged imagery above their heads as they marched, but Holtom's image was the one that stuck—it was adopted by the Direct Action Committee against nuclear war.

While Holtom's peace sign—created without copyright—might look very simple upon first glance, there is some heavy symbolism within the circle and three lines.First, the symbol references the letters “N”and “D”,standing for nuclear disarmament. But another inspiration behind the peace sign reportedly comes from the 1814 paintingThe Third of May1808 by Francisco de Goya. The image shows a Spanish man standing before Napoleon's army, arms spread, waiting to be killed. The revolutionary painting clearly showed the horrors of war.

Holtom's symbol caught on nearly immediately, which aroused people's real feelings of being desperate and political urgency.Today, however, the Schirn Kunsthalle believes it is time for another peace sign, one that communicates what peace means at this particular moment in human history. While Holtom's image was made in response to the threat of nuclear violence, there are many new issues threatening safety and harmony among humans today.

C.It was created by Holtom. D.It connected with world peace.

3.What is talked about in the paragraph 4?

A.The strong-willed protesters.

B.Gerald Holtom's gift as a designer.

C.The birth of the current peace sign.

D.The success in fighting against nuclear.

4.How couldThe Third of May1808 give Holtom the inspiration?

A.It was an unforgettable day. B.It showed Napoleon's cruelty.

C.It conveyed the horrors of war. D.Nuclear was first used on that day.

Task 5

Few things bring back fearful memories as the thought of elementary school physical education (PE) class. No matter how old you are, you never forget that feeling of getting pounded by a dodgeball(躲避球)or desperately trying to swing a rope while the whole class looked on from below.

The format of the standard physical education class has been the same for decades.Take large groups of kids with varying athletic ability and force them to compete with one another in sports that favor those with actual skill. This old school PE focused on getting kids active for 30 to 60 minutes a day once or twice a week. But wouldn't it be nice if classes appealed to a wider variety of kids and if they taught kids how to stay active for a lifetime?

The new school of thought looks outside the gym for activities that not only get kids moving during the school day,but also show them how to keep moving on their own. That's why kids in Tahoma High School, are trying activities such as mountain biking, in-line skating, dance and self-defense instead of passing on dodgeball and flag football.

When PE classes focus on real-life exercises rather than just sports,it gives kids a chance to learn about a variety of ways that they can involve fitness into their lives. It's more about teaching skills that will keep kids healthy for a lifetime and less about making them against one another in competitive games. And it's much more likely to get kids moving, even after the school bell rings.

With PE classes like that,it's entirely possible that when today's kids grow up and think back to their school years, they won't have horrible memory.Instead, they'll remember doing yoga (瑜伽), riding bikes and going for a hike. And maybe it will inspire them to get moving for the rest of their lives.

1.What does the author think of the old format of PE class?

A.It can't develop students'potential. B.It is difficult for teachers to control.

C.It might make some students embarrassed. D.It can teach kids to stay active for a lifetime.

2.What might be the motto of Tahoma High School's PE teachers?

A.Practice hard. B.Future ready.

C.Stay competitive. D.Swifter,higher and stronger.

3.How will the new-style PE class affect children?

A.They will be much happier. B.They will be more responsible.

C.They will no longer fear competition. D.They will be brave enough to protect others.

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Yoga and riding bikes aren't fit for kids.

B.People like thinking back to their school life.

C.Kids in Tahoma High School are much healthier.

D.Kids in Tahoma High School may like sports more.

Task 6

There are hundreds of different things you can do no matter how much money you have. 2 .No money down and no money ever, you can start going for walks in the countryside or along the river. If you're willing to dive into your wallet, try dance classes, or an instrument.

3 .Technology is amazing and it leaves room for no excuses. There are many large sites that offer you free online courses, and then there are university websites like MIT and Harvard that put up all the content from certain courses online available to everyone. Not only does it keep you busy, but it keeps your mind working while broadening your mind.

We all tend to put ourselves into little boxes. We think we would like this;we think we should act like that. 4 .Take a minute to think of something you'd never do and then put your mind to it.

Challenge yourself to limit your time spent on the Internet that isn't making your life any better. 5 .You could do something like talking to a family member,or helping out a friend.Being on your computer could be keeping your life from being more interesting and from being a better person.

A.But it really doesn't do us any good

B.You can start changing that right now

C.Money is very important for your choice

D.It seems that we have been used to that life
