Wang Dongjin， a cardiologist from the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital， was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Doctor along with nine other medical workers on August 19， Chinese Medical Workers Day.

Wang has performed over 10，000 heart surgeries， with a success rate of over 99 percent. He adopts the method of minimally invasive heart surgery， which enables doctors to conduct the operation through several small incisions instead of the traditional long cut of open-heart surgery.

Wang worked at the Beijing Fuwai Hospital， a leading cardiac hospital in China， before moving on to the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital in 2001. When he arrived， the hospital was not equipped to conduct heart surgery on patients over 65. Now， through his efforts， of the over 2，000 heart surgeries performed there every year， 31 percent are on people over 65.

As the new semester begins， many people still have prejudices and misunderstandings about the new home economics major being offered at Chinese universities.

This major aims to train professional talent for home economics company management， education and training， particularly， knowledge-based talent， and does not include domestic aids. The major in some universities offers courses that involve dietetic hygiene， nutrition， marriage， pension and fi nancial management.

Currently， the home service industry is quite different from prevalent stereotypes， reflecting specialization， service standard- ization and management systemization. As for society， a home economics major can also bring about changes and innovations within the industry.

In order to break societal prejudices， the home service industry still has a long way to go. It needs to bring professional skills and services to a higher level and promote the social status of employees so that they can work in dignity and attract more talent to the industry.

The Internet celebrity economy converts fans into purchasing power through targeted marketing which takes fashionable Internet celebrities as its image spokespeople and their aesthetic tastes as leading factors.

In recent years， this economy has experienced an explosive growth in China with a boost in capital. As of May 2018， the total number of Internet celebrity fans was 588 million， with the total economy exceeding 2 trillion yuan （$283 billion）.

In Hangzhou， capital of east Chinas Zhejiang Province， live-streaming e-commerce is booming and there are many newly built commercial zones where incubating companies and live-streaming companies and studios have settled.

Viya is the most popular Internet celebrity on the live-streaming platform of Taobao， the Chinese e-commerce giant. With a huge professional team， she has created a record of driving sales by 267 million yuan （$37.7 million） in two hours， bringing in 2.7 billion yuan （$382 million） in 2018 by advertising goods during her live streams. Many other Internet celebrities have made a fortune and become an essential part of marketing campaigns.

However， many problems have arisen with this new phenomenon. Due to the fact that Internet celebrities with more followers can get more money and opportunities，many people are motivated to fake the number of fans and views they have. In addition， tax evasion， plagiarism and lack of supervision are also problems that have a negative impact on industrial development.

How to regulate and guide the Internet celebrity economy toward a sustainable development pattern is the issue which commercial platforms， Internet celebrities and regulators should all be concerned about and together make concerted efforts to fi nd an answer.

Declining Marriage Rate

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Civil Affairs， Chinas marriage rate in 2018 was only 7.2 percent， the lowest in the past 10 years.

Stressful work and a competitive employment market have become a major stumbling block to marriage for some young people， while many prefer to stay single or unmarried so they can be free to make full use of their time and devote themselves to their careers and lives.

Some believe that being able to stay unmarried is social progress. The idea that marriage is not an obligation but a choice is a refl ection of the diversity of social concepts， which will gradually replace traditional stereotypes.

However， marriage also has a connection to the development of society. If too many people choose not to marry， the birth rate will decline and there will eventually be a terrible impact on economic and social development.

Society should respect young peoples personal decisions and they are entitled to different choices. But we should also refl ect on whether we have created enough opportunities and provided suffi cient conditions for them to get married. The whole society should care and support the young generation more in education， employment， housing， vacation and social security so that they dont have to worry about the perceived burden of marriage.

MAO DUN PRIZE WINNER

Eminent writer Liang Xiaoshengs novel Renshijian， which roughly translates as The Human World， won the Mao Dun Literature Prize， one of the four highest literary awards in China， according to an announcement by the Chinese Writers Association on August 16.

The novel revolves around an ordinary mans life， showcasing the transformation of Chinese society over the past fi ve decades. The prize， awarded every four years， was given to fi ve novelists this year， chosen from 234 candidates. The award carries a purse of 500，000 yuan （$70，680）.

Liang， born in Harbin， northeast Chinas Heilongjiang Province， in 1949， is a professor with Beijing Language and Culture University. He was sent to work in the countryside after graduating from high school in 1968 under the then policy to involve the “educated youth” in farming. Liang drew on his experience to write several novels about the “educated youth.”
