“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning and I surf the net.”

“I often check my e-mail forty times a day.”

“I often spend more than three hours during one time on the net.”

“I spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-life friends.”

Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction called Internet addiction. Internet addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The use of the Internet can be an addiction like drug use. People lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.

For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried, and they called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the net for several days straight.

Studies show that about 6% to 10% of Internet users become addicted. And people worry about the teens because the Internet is changing the playing field for some of them. They spend more time in cyberspace (網(wǎng)絡(luò)空間) than in the real world of friends and family.

Is “surfing the net” a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have these symptoms: ① You do not go to important family activities or you do not do school work because you like to spend hours on the Internet. ② You cant wait for your next online time. ③ You go out with your friends less and less. ④ You plan to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours.

A. It is like taking drugs.

B. It is terrible to imagine.

C. It is a way of producing drugs.

D. It is something like keeping drugs.

25. Why do people worry about the teens?

A. They used to work on the Internet.

B. The teens are wasting too much money.

C. The playing field of the teens will disappear.

D. More teens will become addicted to the Internet.

26. What does the example of the college student show?

A. Some Internet users have been seriously addicted.

B. Internet addicts usually stay in the computer lab without sleep.

C. Internet problems are more serious among college students.

D. The police often help to find those Internet addicts.

27. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. What to do about Internet addiction.

B. How to know whether you are addicted to the Internet.

C. Why one should surf the net less.

D. How to get away from the Internet.

C

Men are believed to be decision-makers. For a woman, to be recognized in such a society is not easy. However, there are many who build a name for themselves and prove it is not a male-driven society.

Oprah Winfrey (1954—present)

Brought up by a teenage mother, single-handedly, Oprah did not have an easy childhood. However, with her will power and self-confidence she reached high in her chosen career and today Oprah Winfrey has not only turned into a billionaire (億萬富翁), but also won many awards and celebrated titles.

Florence Nightingale (1820—1910)

“International Nurse Day” is celebrated every year on her birthday. Though born into a rich family, she took up nursing as her career (事業(yè)) and during the Crimean War, along with the nurses she had trained, took care of the wounded soldiers. She was often seen carrying a lamp (燈) while visiting patients at night and got the name “The Lady with the Lamp”.

Kathryn Bigelow (1951—present)

She said she could neither change her gender (性別) nor could she stop making films, and we say she should not because she is good at what she does. The Oscar she won for movie The Hurt Locker proved that she is exceptionally talented. With this she became the first woman to receive the Academy Award for Best Director.

Amelia Earhart (1897—1937)

The first female pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia Earhart did not want anything to stop her from achieving her goals just because she was a woman. It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce (兇猛的) tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but also good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays dont even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.

An experienced driver, whose manners are perfect, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream (車流) without causing total blockages (堵塞) that give rise to unpleasant feelings.

Unfortunately, modern drivers cant even learn to drive. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

32. According to the author, troubles on the road are often caused by ___ .

A. the bad road conditions

B. the large number of cars

C. the speed of modern life

D. the behaviors of the drivers

33. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A. Strict traffic rules are badly needed.

B. Road politeness helps reduce quarrelling.

C. Drivers should show road politeness properly.

D. Old ladies should be encouraged to cross the road.

34. The underlined word “give-and-take” in the last paragraph means “___”.

A. respecting for each other

B. quarrelling with each other

C. politeness and impoliteness

D. good manners and bad manners

35. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Traffic jams. B. Modern drivers.

C. Road politeness. D. Good manners.

第二節(jié) 閱讀七選五(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Scientists often see the first ten years of a childs life as the “window of opportunity”.? And studies show that the following activities can benefit their brain greatly.

Free playtime has always been an important part of “being a kid”, but it is also important to a childs development. “Free play” not only helps kids develop different skills, it also helps them develop into happy healthy adults in the future.

Read with kids.

Reading has long been known to improve childrens intelligence.? For parents who dont have much time, just surrounding your kids with books goes a long way too.

Put kids to bed early.

Preschool children should get at least eleven hours of sleep and kids up to age 12 should try to get at least ten hours of sleep.

Learn a second language.

Early studies in this field have shown that bilingual (雙語的) kids can perform better under pressure. Young children can learn new languages with nearly perfect fluency and pronunciation.

Praise good effort, not intelligence.

Your kids may be smart but you should mainly praise the effort they put into tasks. Kids, who are praised on intelligence, often feel it is a fixed quality, and mistakes or failures badly hurt their self-confidence. Kids who are praised on effort often focus more on learning.

A. Play some helpful games.

B. Give them enough playtime.

C. And they are not afraid to fail and try again.

D. Kids still need time away from the TV to do homework.

E. Kids who read often develop earlier writing and number skills as well.

F. Everything at this time is very important to the development of a persons brain.

G. Studies show that kids with regular bedtime are better at languages, maths and reading.
