“Getting late for a meeting, I need to run,” he said, as he put his coat over the shoulder and rushed out of the house. As he drove away, she came running down the stairs two at a time. “Wait, wait,” she shouted, but he had already left.

“He forgot to give me a goodbye kiss,” she said in a low, sad voice that shook under the weight of the hurt. She called him and said, “You left without giving me a kiss.” “I am sorry, sweetheart,” he said, his voice shaking. “It is okay,” she said, trying to be all grown-up as she cut the call.

She ate her breakfast quickly, put on her shoes, picked up her school bag and started to walk out of the door. Her shoulders were slumped (耷拉) and her eyes were filled with tears. As she climbed down the steps, a car came to a stop outside the house. He got out of the car. She ran to him.

“I am sorry I forgot,” he said, as he picked her up and hugged her. She said nothing. Her jaw ached from smiling.

Fifteen years later, no one would remember he was late for a meeting, but a little girl would never ever forget that her father drove all the way back home just to kiss her goodbye!

What is more important, work or family? Some parents always put work before everything. But some put family first. Remember, the company will run the same without you and your colleagues (同事) may forget you soon after you leave. But you are everything to your children.

You cant always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesnt think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. Thats why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.

The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (傘篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.

The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, theres also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed (安裝) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

28. Why did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?

A. To predict a heavy rain. B. To check the weather forecast.

C. To protect people from the rain. D. To remind people to take an umbrella.

29. Which of the following shows the correct working steps of the Lampbrella?

A. motor→canopy→sensors B. sensors→motor→canopy

C. motor→sensors→canopy D. canopy→motor→sensors

30. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?

A. Its moving speed. B. Its appearance. C. Its installation. D. Its safety.

31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow. B. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.

C. The designer will open a company to sell his product. D. The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.

D

Great white sharks! Just hearing that name makes many peoples hair stand on end. In reality, these big fish have more to fear from us than we do from them. For many years, people killed countless great white sharks in the waters around the United States.

But thanks to conservation (保護) efforts, great whites are making a comeback in the US. Why is the growing population of a killer fish something to celebrate? “When you fish too many of them, you start to lose balance in the environment,” says shark researcher Tobey Curtis. As the biggest killer, sharks help keep the populations of fish, seals, and other creatures they eat from growing too large.

In spite of their importance, great white sharks had long been hunted for their meat and their fins (鰭). Then, in 1997, the US government passed a law that didnt allow the hunting of great whites. Afterwards, the number of these sharks in the US waters started to increase.

Conservationists have also played a part in the sharks comeback. The research group OCEARCH is using a method called tagging (加標簽) to help change peoples attitudes toward great whites. They let the public follow each shark as it travels the worlds oceans. OCEARCH also gives each tagged shark a name to help people form a closer connection with the big fish.

The groups most well-known shark is named Katharine. She was tagged last year near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Since then, thousands of people have tracked Katharines movements on Twitter and the OCEARCH website.

This helps people see sharks in a new way. Chris Fischer, the founder of OCEARCH believes learning to appreciate great whites will encourage people to do more to protect them.

32. The underlined part in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “___”.

A. worries many people B. bores many people C. frightens many people D. interests many people

33. The text suggests that the law passed in 1997 ___ .

A. seemed very helpful B. let scientists down C. needed to be changed D. made people like great whites

34. The case of Katharine shows ___ .

A. great whites are in fact lovely animals B. the OCEARCH website has a lot of visitors

C. the number of great whites is growing quickly D. OCEARCH helps people get closer to great whites

35. What is the writers purpose in writing the text?

A. To introduce an experiment result. B. To remind us that big killers are dying out.

C. To make an advertisement for OCEARCH. D. To inform us the number of great whites are growing.
