不具塊根。葉3淺裂至3全裂。花序總狀或傘房狀，或花單朵頂生。萼片脫落，藍色或紫色，稀白色，多少展開，稀上萼片船形;距與萼片近等長或比萼片長，稀比萼片短。花瓣與萼片同色，稀淡黃色或黃白色。退化雄蕊瓣片，也與萼片同色，稀淡黃色或黃白色，2淺裂或2半裂，稀不分裂，腹面基部之上被黃色或白色髯毛。心皮3，稀5。種子四面體形，沿縱棱具狹翅或無翅，或狹倒卵球形，具密集橫向排列的小鱗片。

約190種，隸屬于6亞組，廣布于亞洲、歐洲東北部、非洲和北美洲。我國有6亞組約132種，多數種分布于西南部的四川、云南、西藏、青海等省（區），西部、北部和東北部諸省各有4種至1種。
