Task 1

A new study suggests that healthy adults who get at least eight hours of sleep a night may be less likely to experience common exercise-related injuries. The study was based on information from over 7,500 United States soldiers in the Army's Special Operations Forces. About 95 percent of the study subjects were men.

The researchers found that soldiers who got no more than four to five hours of sleep a night were over twice as likely to report bone or muscle injury in the last year as those who slept eight hours or longer. During the year-long study, more than half of the soldiers said they had experienced at least one musculoskeletal(肌與骨骼的) injury. About 63 percent of the study subjects reported getting six to seven hours of sleep a night. About 10 percent reported getting no more than four hours. Only 16 percent got eight hours or more.

Compared to those who reported eight hours of sleep or more each night, soldiers who slept seven hours were 24 percent more likely to experience a musculoskeletal injury. The risk climbed as the hours of sleep dropped, with a 53 percent greater injury risk at six hours of sleep. At five hours of sleep, the risk of injury was twice greater.

In the Army, two-thirds of injuries are from musculoskeletal overuse. Most are caused by physical training or repetitive activities. About 42 percent of Army soldiers report an average of five hours of sleep or less each night. The study notes that making sure soldiers get enough rest could be a way to reduce injury risk.

One limitation of the study is that researchers depended on soldiers reporting how long they slept each night. And, additional research would be needed to test whether increasing sleep time really reduces injuries.

Getting too little sleep leads to decreased attention and mental energy, which can lead to people being more likely to get hurt. Sleep loss causes “cell damage in multiple organs”. Getting extra sleep might help reverse this cell damage over time. Most people are healthiest and perform their best with seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

Nowadays facial recognition technology has crept into people's life and is being commonly used. How does the technology work? 1 In which areas is it applied? What are people worried about? The answers to these questions are as follows.

How does facial recognition work? It works by scanning faces and measuring facial features.2 The system then runs through a database to check it for a match.

Who are its users? Facial recognition is most common in China, where people can use it to pay for a coffee, visit tourist attractions, and even withdraw cash from ATMs.3 In Europe, high-end hotels and retailers also use facial recognition cameras to identify VIPs and celebrities as they enter, in order to give them good treatment. Several US airlines are ready to replace boarding passes with face scanners.

Where is facial recognition used? Many people know that facial recognition is being used in shops and high-speed train stations. But these are only the tip of the iceberg. Law agencies have had faces on file for decades.4 Doctors have already started using it to help them diagnose rare genetic diseases that produce distinctive facial characteristics. Facial recognition is increasingly being used by some companies, too. Facebook's system for “tagging” a photo—identifying who is in the picture—is now as accurate as users doing it themselves. Apple's iPhone X can be unlocked when its owner simply looks at it.

What are people's concerns? As the technology becomes more widespread, there are growing fears that it will invade privacy and cause other troubles, thus putting people at risk. 5

My fiancé (未婚夫) and I were excited about shopping for our first home. But our funds were limited, and none of the houses in our price range seemed satisfactory.

One agent recommended a house in particular. Although her description sounded wonderful, the price was beyond our range, so we declined. But she kept urging us to have a look at least. We finally did and we loved it at first sight. It was Our Home, small and charming, overlooking a quiet lake.Walking through the rooms and talking with the owners, a nice elderly couple, we felt the warmth and happiness of the marriage within that home.Perfect as it was,the price remained too high for us.But every day,we would sit by the lake, looking at the house and dreaming of what it would be like to live there.

Days later, we made an offer—far below the asking price. Surprisingly, they didn't laugh at us.They renewed their offer instead. It was also much more than we could afford, but far less than the original asking price.

The next day, we got a disappointing message that another buyer had offered a much higher price. Even so, we decided to talk with the owners directly. We made our final offer, which was still thousands of dollars less than the other buyer's bid. We knew it, but we had to try. Nobody knew if we could get it.
