1. meter n. 米

The street is 10 meters wide. 這條街有10米寬。

【拓展】 此處為“基數詞+meters / kilometers+deep / long / wide / high”結構， 表示某物有“多深、多長、多寬、多高”等。

The Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan is more than 50 meters high. 武漢的黃鶴樓五十多米高。

The Yellow River is 5，464 kilometers long. 黃河有5，464千米長。

The well is about ten meters deep. 這口水井大約十米深。

2. population n. 人口（數量），全體居民

The population of Wuhan is 14，186，500. 武漢的人口數是14186500。

【拓展】 population作名詞， 意為“人口，人口數量”。population單獨作主語時，謂語動詞用第三人稱單數形式。

① 分數或百分數修飾population作主語時，謂語動詞常用復數形式。

Thirty percent of the population live in the city. 30%的人口住在城市。

② 對人口的數量提問用what。

What?s the population of Beijing？ 北京的人口是多少？

③ 表示某地有多少人口時用“have a population of+數字”。

The town has a population of about forty thousand. 這個鎮有大約4萬人口。

3. tour n. 旅行，觀光

They?re going on a world tour. 他們正在環球之旅。

【辨析】 tour， journey， trip和travel的用法區別：三者都有“旅行”的意思，但各詞的含義有所不同。

① tour指旅行規模大、路線曲折，表示大型的參觀、訪問、（巡回）旅游、視察、購物、演出等，可作動詞和名詞。

The band are on a two-month tour of Europe. 樂隊目前在歐洲進行為期兩個月的巡回演出。

② journey通常指陸地上的遠距離“旅行”，有時也表示短程的步行距離。journey只作名詞。

My family took a journey from Beijing to Shanghai last week. 我的家人上周從北京到上海旅行。

—How long is your journey to school？ 你上學的路有多長？

—Only about 10 minutes. 只有10分鐘。

③ trip一般指時間短、距離近的“旅行、遠足”，在非正式用語中可指長途旅行，代替journey，只作名詞。

They also went on a trip to Wuhan last year. 他們去年也去了一次武漢之旅。

④ travel指總概念性的“旅行，游歷”，指長時間、遠距離的“旅行”，可作動詞和名詞。其復數形式意為“旅游筆記，游記”。

At present， many people are fond of travel in their spare time. 目前，許多人喜歡在業余時間旅行。

另外，voyage主要指“航海，航空，航行”等。

4. achieve v. 完成，實現

Zhong Nanshan has experienced many difficulties and finally achieved success. 鐘南山歷盡坎坷終獲成功。

【拓展】 achieve表示“（通過努力）實現;取得（成績、成功、目標）”等。achieve our dream意為“實現我們的夢想”， 相當于make our dream come true。

I achieved a good mark in the math test yesterday. 我在昨天的數學測試中得了高分。

achievement n. 成就，成績

I felt a great sense of achievement when I reached the top of the mountain. 當我到達山頂的時候，我有一種巨大的成就感。

5. include v. 包括，包含

This plan includes most of your suggestions. 這項計劃里包括了你們的大部分建議。

【拓展】 ① include后可接動詞V-ing形式作賓語，不接不定式。

My job doesn?t include making coffee for the boss. 我的工作并不包括為老板煮咖啡。

② including通常被用作介詞，后接名詞或代詞，構成介賓短語，意為“包括……在內”。

There are 40 students in the classroom， including me. 教室里有40個學生，包括我。

6. succeed v. 成功，實現目標，完成

Ms. Li Lanjuan worked hard and she succeeded at last. 李蘭娟女士努力工作，她終于成功了。

【辨析】 succeed， success和successful的區別：

① succeed 表示“成功”，是不及物動詞，因此不能用于被動語態。詞組：succeed in doing sth.。

He succeeded in working out the math problem. 他成功地算出了那道數學題。

② success是名詞，表示抽象意義的“成功”，不可數。表具體意義時指“成功的人或事”，是可數的。

He has had great success in business. 他事業上很成功。

③ successful是形容詞，可以用來作定語或表語。

This is a very successful speech. 這是一次非常成功的演講。

作表語時后面不能接不定式，而是接in doing sth.。

They were successful in launching a communication satellite. 他們成功地發射了一顆通訊衛星。

7. weigh v. 稱……重量

過去式：weighed;現在分詞：weighing;過去分詞：weighed

How much do you weigh？ 你體重多少？

【拓展】 weight n. 重量

What is the weight of the parcel？ 包裹有多重？

8. excitement n. 激動，興奮

The news caused great excitement among her friends. 這消息使她的朋友們興奮不已。

【辨析】 excited和exciting：

excited意為“興奮的，激動的”，是-ed形容詞，一般用來修飾人。

He was very excited to be asked to play for Wales. 入選威爾士隊使他非常興奮。

exciting意為“令人興奮的，使人激動的”，是-ing形容詞，一般用來修飾物或事件。

The race itself is very exciting. 比賽本身非常刺激。

9. protection n. 保護，保衛

protect作及物動詞，意為“保護”，名詞形式是protection。protect sb. / sth. from...意為“保護某人/某物免受……傷害”。

It is our duty to protect the children. 保護兒童是我們的責任。

【拓展】 protect后面可接介詞against，意為“保護，保衛”。

This medicine can protect you against heart disease. 這種藥可以幫你預防心臟病。

10. or so

or so意為“大約”，表示不確定的數目。

There are twenty foreign teachers or so in our school. 我們學校大約有20名外教。

【辨析】 or so， about與around三者均表示“大約”，用于修飾數字，表示不確定的數目。or so通常位于修飾詞之后，而about與around 通常位于修飾詞之前。

The book cost me 20 yuan or so. 我買這本書花了大約20元。

=The book cost me about / around 20 yuan.
