On one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.

“Hey, arent you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by a stranger. “Im from Mississippi too.”

Without a second thought, the woman joined the Weltys table. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.

“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didnt know what my New York friends were thinking.”

Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Weltys new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.

“My friends said, ‘Now we believe your stories,” Welty added. “And I said, ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.”

Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Weltys people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets beside her house, from conversations overheard on a bus.

It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. However, she continues to walk into life and notes the vivid life. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment (片段) of a particularly interesting story, yet she quickly takes out a notebook and write something fantastic under her point of pen.

Fede Galizia was born in Milan, Italy sometime before 1573. Her father, also a painter, from whom Galizia learned to paint. By the age of twelve, she was commented by Gian Paolo Lomazzo, a painter and art theorist, who wrote, “This girl is interested in copying the most extraordinary of our art. She is indeed accomplished as an artist.”

At a young age, Galizia was already an established portrait (肖像) painter handling many commissioned works. Perhaps it was her fathers influence that led to Galizias attention to detail in her portraits. Her treatment of jewels and clothing made her a very desirable portrait painter. She was often commissioned to paint religious themes as well. Several of her paintings based on the story of Judith and Holofemes, a popular theme in art of the period, were collected and preserved well today.

The style of her portraits came from the traditions of the Renaissance (文藝復興) in Italy with a sharply realistic approach. Galizias artistic skills of drawing and painting are evident in her portrait of Paolo Morigia, a Jesuit scholar, writer and one of her earliest supporters.

When not painting portraits, Galizia was primarily interested in painting still lifes, a type of painting in which she was a pioneer and for which she is best remembered. Although very few contemporary (同一時代) sources mention Galizias still life paintings, they are the majority of her surviving works. One of her signed still lifes made in 1602 is said to be the first dated still life by an Italian artist and proves her involvement in this new style of painting.

Galizia never married. On 21, 1630, she is thought to have died of a disease spread in Milan. The great woman gave all her life to the art of painting.

You probably know that frogs hop (蛙跳). But did you know that theres a small frog in the Pacific Northwest that bellyflops (肚皮跳)? Its called a tailed frog.

Dr Rick Essner, who has been studying tailed frogs for the past few years, said, “Ive looked at thousands of jumps and have never seen them land on their feet like other frogs.” Most of the time, tailed frogs land on their stomachs and then bring their back legs in to prepare for another jump.

Essner first noticed these frogs because of the way they swim. Other frogs kick both of their back legs at the same time. But when a tailed frog swims, it pushes first with one leg and then the other.

To try to find out why tailed frogs bellyflop, Essner and other scientists collected and filmed different kinds of frogs. They found that all of the frogs start their jumps the same way: they hold out their legs. The change comes in the landing. Tailed frogs cant move their back legs as quickly as other frogs do. Maybe they dont need to. Tailed frogs live around water and quickly jump into the water to escape danger.

Early frogs developed around watery areas and could jump quickly into the water to escape danger. Scientists think those frogs blended in with the green plants on the side of the rocky rivers, just like todays tailed frogs. “I would guess that other animals would have problems detecting them,” explained Essner. When other animals find those early frogs, the frogs could jump into the river. They didnt need to continue hopping.

Tailed frogs and other kinds of frogs went their own ways about 200 million years ago. Tailed frogs stayed by rivers. Other kinds of frogs moved to places where new hopping skills allowed them to survive.

32. What is special about the tailed frog?

34. The underlined word “detecting” in Paragraph 5 most probably means “______”.

A. discovering B. killing C. eating D. using
