Celeste Ng, a new writer, has gained recognition for her first novel, Everything I Never Told You.

Ngs parents came from Hong Kong, China in the 1960s. Ng was born in America and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights, Ohio, in a family of scientists. Celeste went to Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award.

Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The main character is Lydia, a teenage girl, who is the favorite of three children born to a white mother and a Chinese-American father. The story is about Lydias disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and exposed (暴露的) secrets as they search for their lost daughter.

Though the characters in this story are Asian, Ng says she didnt really want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story was about real people in her life. Because she grew up in America and doesnt speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian characters in the book.

The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the Editors Pick for No. 1 Best Book of the Year in 2014. Ng is still getting used to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have read her book. With so many readers, its safe to say this is a book you should read. But if youre looking for a simple mystery, this book might not be for you. Most readers warn that you should not read this book unless youre prepared to cry.

24. What does the novel Everything I Never Told You mainly talk about?

A. A family with a missing child. B. The ways to get rid of regret.

C. The secret of the American world. D. The life of teenagers in America.

25. Which of the following is TRUE about Celeste Ng?

A. She wanted to help the Asian people. B. She wrote about Asian characters.

C. She was born in Hong Kong. D. She wrote real people in her life.

26. What can we learn about the book from the last paragraph?

A. Its about race. B. Its moving. C. Its mysterious. D. It has a surprising ending.

27. What is the text mainly about?

A. Celeste Ng and her family. B. The awards Celeste Ng won.

C. Celeste Ngs learning experience. D. Celeste Ng and her best-known novel.

Have you come across much western childrens literature?

Most English-speaking children grow up with the same delightful set of fictional characters. The Winnie the Pooh stories involve a strange selections of animals such as a kangaroo, a pig, a donkey, a tiger, an owl and a bear, who live together in a wood, leading fairy ordinary lives. Far more exciting and dangerous events take place in The Wind in the Willows, the story of the foolish Mr Toad and all his adventures.

Talking animals is also the main characters in The Jungle Book and the Just So Stories. In the latter we find lots of imaginative explanations as to why the world is like what it is.

Far more laughter comes from Roald Dahis Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Whillie Wonka is the perfect adult in the eyes of children with all his clever ideas and endless supply of sweets. Also much loved is Bilbo Baggins, the funny little hobbit (霍比特人), who ends up having adventures with wolves and dragons. Of course, the stories go on in the much more serious The Lord of the Rings, better read a few years later. A new star in the world of magic and childrens fiction is Harry Potter, the schoolboy who learns spells (魔法) rather than maths. Adventure books remain popular, too. Although well over a century old now, Treasure Island is still an enthralling story with young Jim Hawkins dealing with secret maps and pirates (海盜). Such books make childhood a time of wonder and imagination.

When we say older people shrink (縮小), we dont mean they become tiny enough to fit in your pocket! We just mean that its common for older people to become a little shorter over time. This kind of shrinking cant be stopped, although people can slow this process. But why does shrinking happen at all?

Because of gravity, cushions between the bones in the backbone get compressed, which makes a person lose a little height and become shorter.

Another reason why some older people shrink is because of osteoporosis (骨質疏松). Osteoporosis occurs when bone is broken down and not enough new bone material is made. Over time, bone is said to be lost. Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured.

Older people—especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with—are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by, a person with osteoporosis can get small breaks in bones that are called compression fractures (壓迫性骨折). These breaks cause collapse of the backbone and over time the person with osteoporosis can become hunched over (駝背).

Did you know that every day you shrink a little, too? You arent as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. Thats because as the day goes on, water in the disks of the spine gets compressed due to gravity, making you just a tiny bit shorter. Dont worry, though. Once you get a good nights rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, youre standing tall again!

Smoking and drinking alcohol can make this problem worse. Want to do something right now to build strong bones? I believe what I say will help you.

32. What can we know about osteoporosis?

A. Gravity is one of its causes. B. Most old women will develop it.

C. Once our bone is broken down, it will occur. D. People with it are more likely to be shorter.

33. What should we do if we dont want to shrink faster?

A. Try to reduce gravity. B. Sleep as long as possible.

C. Be careful not to be hurt by others. D. Keep away from smoking and drinking alcohol.

34. What will the author most probably talk about in the paragraph to be followed?

A. How to grow taller. B. How to avoid shrinking.

C. How to have strong bones. D. How to become healthier.

35. What is the best title for the text?

A. Why Do We Shrink B. How to Live a Healthy Life

C. How Can We Stop Shrinking D. Some Tips on How to Keep Tall
