I was watching my kids play on the sidewalk when I looked up and saw a crow sitting on the telephone wire. The crow sat with its head turned to one side, observing us with one friendly black eye.

Im not a bird expert or a birdwatcher, but crows intrigue me. Since that day, I have become friends with the neighborhood crows, and Ive learned a thing or two along the way.

The best way to introduce yourself to a crow is by feeding it. Im sure there are other ways to go about it, but the easiest and fastest way to a crows heart is food. Some may argue that a crow is a wild animal and by feeding it, you encourage the unnatural dependence. And to most wildlife, this is an excellent philosophy. But crows and humans have been living side by side for centuries, and researchers like Marzluff and Angell, who wrote In the Company of Crows and Ravens, point to many examples of cultural co-evolution (共同進(jìn)化) between us. Its been a rather symbiotic (共生的) relationship for quite a while.

Certainly, humans and crows lives and histories have become closely related. I moved to this neighborhood in this small city 5 years ago. Im relatively new here, but the crows in my neighborhood may have lived here for many years. Theyve watched people come and go for years—people who may have watched them right back.

So anyway, were neighbors, and feeding is the neighborly thing to do.

24. It can be inferred form the Paragraph 2 that the writer ___ .

A. lives close to the crows

B. wants to be a birdwatcher

C. doesnt get interested in crows

D. has learned something about crows

25. What does the writer think is the best way to get the crows to like you?

A. To play with them. B. To give food to them.

C. To watch them closely. D. To make friends with them.

26. What is the purpose of Paragraph 3?

A. To introduce a book. B. To develop a philosophy.

C. To correct peoples ideas. D. To share personal experience.

27. What can we learn about the crows in the writers neighborhood?

A. They like watching kids playing.

B. They have not enough food to eat.

C. They are used to living with humans.

D. They havent lived there for a long time.

Earthquake rescue (救援) robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say that with these robots, rescue workers will be able to have more time to save more lives during an earthquake.

This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detector-bot. Its about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions (作用) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people stuck in an earthquake.

This robot has a high-quality 360-degree panoramic camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area. Dr Qi Juntong, from Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Science, said, “Unlike other automatic machines, the most important feature of this robot is that it doesnt need a distant control. We just set the information of the earthquake-struck area on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”

This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.

As well as a detector (探測(cè)器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40-centimeter-long robot, which can work well even in the dark to send clear pictures.

Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10-meter-long pipe. People who are caught in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.

Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team soon.

28. What is TRUE about the robot according to the text?

A. It weighs about 30 kilos.

B. It is a 10-meter-long machine.

C. It is a machine carried by a helicopter.

D. It sends supplies to the earthquake area.

29. Dr Qi Juntong thinks the robot is different mainly because? ___ .

A. it has more functions

B. it has a high-quality camera

C. it can change as the environment changes

D. it can work by himself once given the information

30. The underlined word “which” in Paragraph 5 refers to “___”.

A. a camera B. a detector C. a rescuer D. a robot

31. What is the text mainly about?

A. An introduction to the robot.

B. The reason for making the robot.

C. Some rescue tips after earthquakes.

D. Some information about earthquakes.

If an emperor penguin wants to survive in the worst of an Antarctic winter, there is no such thing as personal space. The large birds are known to stay very close to each other, feather to feather, in groups of thousands to keep out the cold.

For the first time, German researchers show that these gatherings are carefully organized structures, in which single penguins can cause mass movements within the group that is similar to the movements of cars in a traffic jam.

“If one penguin starts a wave, perhaps walking too close to its neighbor, it travels like a Mexican wave in a football stadium,” said physicist Daniel Zitterbart. The Mexican wave happens when all the people watching a sport stand up, move their arms up and down, and sit down again one after the other in a continuous movement looking like a wave on the sea.

Emperor penguins gather in formation when the temperatures drop below -18℃, using each others bodies to keep warm. They arrived at an arrangement that physicists recognize as a “triangular lattice structure”, with a penguin at each point of the triangle. “They gather just by their natural ability,” said Zitterbart who filmed and then analyzed the movements of the penguins.

The researchers explain that the movements of a single bird within the huddle (擠作一團(tuán)的動(dòng)物) can set off a chain reaction that travels through the rest of the group.

That movement is similar to what happens when a single car in a traffic jam moves forward, setting off a chain reaction of tiny movements by all of the cars behind it. But theres a difference: only the first car in the jam can start off the group movement. On the ice, any penguin among the crowd can cause a wave of small movements.

“This is one case where a traffic jam is very useful,” said Zitterbart.

32. Penguins formations ___ .

A. are well arranged

B. often cause trouble

C. are taught by physicists

D. usually move in a square shape

33. What do we know about the Mexican wave?

A. It is the major cause of penguins movements.

B. It is a complex structure organized by penguins.

C. It is a dangerous incident that happens in stadium.

D. It works like the movements of cars in a traffic jam.

34. What will happen if a penguin moves in the huddle?

A. Other penguins will move one after another.

B. The whole group will move to another place.

C. Other penguins will just stay where they are.

D. The penguins will spread out on the ice.

35. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. Traffic jams.

B. Mexican waves.

C. Penguins movements

D. Penguins gathering structures.
