The ancient Chinese invented rockets about 700 years ago. They first used them in a war against the Mongols. The rockets made a big noise， and all the Mongols horses ran away. But the rockets didnt really hurt① anything. The Chinese could not shoot② them straight enough to hit much. So they stopped using them for war.

About 500 years later， an Englishman made new rockets， and they could work better. English-men used them during the war of 1812 against America.
