Expo 2020 Dubai Offers a Chance to Enhance Dialogue

President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for people of all nations to jointly strengthen global governance, pursue innovation-driven development and advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Speaking by video link to visitors to the China Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, Xi said the expo offers countries an opportunity to share their philosophies and successes in economic and social development and to enhance dialogue and cooperation.

“This shows the great importance of the expo,” Xi said.

The expo, which opened on October 1 after being postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 outbreak, is themed “Connecting Minds, Connecting the Future.”

Xi said in his message that this period in human history is full of challenges and of hope, and that Chinas answer to the future of humanity is to call on people of all nations to work together and jointly respond to the call of the times.

The China Pavilion, themed “Building of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind-Innovation & Opportunity”, showcases the countrys achievements in areas such as space exploration, information technology, modern transportation, artificial intelligence and smart living, Xi said.

China is ready to enhance exchange and cooperation with other countries to seize opportunities for innovation-driven development and to actively promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, the president said.

The 4,636-square-meter China Pavilion is one of the largest at the expo in the United Arab Emirates, the first World Expo held in the Middle East.

Among its highlights are exhibits on the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, high-speed railways, self-driving new energy concept cars, robots and a light show at night, Zhang Shenfeng, commissioner general of the China Pavilion, said.

The China Pavilion, named the “Light of China”, is shaped like a traditional lantern, symbolizing hope and a brighter future for humanity, he explained.

During the expo, which runs until March 2022, Chinas 26 provincial regions and more than 40 top Chinese businesses will hold exhibitions, forums and other activities on—and offline, he said, adding that the number of participating Chinese enterprises surpasses that of any of the previous World Expos held outside China.

QUOTES

Chinas economic recovery remains uneven and unstable amid rising challenges.

— Fu Linghui, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics

China has strong growth resilience for its huge market potential and strong productivity. While the softening base effect from last year poses certain challenges for the rest of the year, an overall healthy job market and steady increase in household income have laid the foundation for stronger consumption amid a stabilized pandemic situation.

— Xu Xianchun, a professor of economics at Tsinghua University

Intensified cost pressure has made it increasingly more urgent to ramp up policy support to safeguard the stable operation of hard-hit, smaller businesses.

— Tang Yao, an associate professor of economics at Peking Universitys Guanghua School of Management

China is proactively expanding imports of non-resource or finished products from Africa, especially higher value-added deep-processed products, as the continent is pushing for a more diversified economic structure through activities like deep processing of its resource and agricultural products.

— Qian Keming, Chinas ViceMinister of Commerce

The nations efforts to form a strong domestic market will create better conditions for labor, capital and other production factors to flow freely among different regions, which will help foster economic strength and new development impetus in accordance with different development levels and the resource endowment of each regional economy.

POLICIES

China to Lay Down a Strong Transportation Path by 2035

China will have built up significant strength in transportation by 2035, with a modern and integrated transport system supporting the countrys national modernization goal, according to a report released by the China Academy of Transportation Science, at the second UN Sustainable Transport Conference in Beijing on October 14.

China highlighted its “National 1-2-3 Travel Circle” plan, which aims to set up the transport system with one hour to commute in cities, two hours to travel within city clusters, and three hours to travel between major domestic cities, by 2035.

It is also expected that international logistics efficiency will be increased. Based on the “Global 1-2-3 Logistics Circle” plan, express package delivery will only take one day within China, two days to neighboring countries, and three days to major global cities.

According to the Outline on Developing Integrated National Transport Network, China will complete a national comprehensive and multidimensional transport network by 2035, featuring safety, intelligence, green and energy-intensiveness.

By 2035, China will establish an innovation system for transport with advanced and safe key equipment, high-caliber professionals and a sound market environment, achieving the basic modernization of its transport governance, according to the report.

BRI Nations Called on to Develop Green Energy

Vice-Premier Han Zheng recently called for joint effort to enable the en- ergy supply in countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative to shift toward a more efficient, greener and diversified direction, as part of broader efforts to respond to climate change.

In remarks delivered via video at the Second Belt and Road Energy Ministerial Conference, Han reiterated Chinas pledges to bolster energy cooperation with different nations under the Belt and Road framework, jointly promote sustainable development of the global energy sector and ensure energy security.

Hans remarks followed President Xi Jinpings announcement that the nation will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad and will step up support for other developing countries in developing green and low-carbon energy.

The conference, held in Qingdao, Shandong province, from October 18 to October 19, bears the theme “Join Hands towards a Greener and More Inclusive Energy Future.”

Han noted that energy cooperation under the BRI framework has made significant progress, as various partnerships in the area were established in recent years.

Han laid out four proposals to further green energy transformation, urging countries to jointly usher in a green and low-carbon transition in the energy sector.

It is important to deepen cooperation in areas including nuclear power, generating power from new energy sources, and smart energy, and to jointly build a green Silk Road, he said.

Han highlighted the need for nations to jointly promote technological innovation in generating power from new energy sources and work together in the research, development and application of clean energy technologies, including those for the purpose of energy conservation and carbon reduction, as well as renewable energy and high-end nuclear power technology.

CIIE Proves Great Platform for Civil Diplomacy

The China International Import Expo has proved to be a great platform for civil diplomacy and can promote friendly exchanges among different peoples, said diplomats, scholars and businesspeople during a recent seminar in Shanghai.

“People trade goods and services at the expo, and at the same time, they exchange thoughts and cultures,” said Chen Jing, president of the Shanghai Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

“The CIIE promotes friendly exchanges and helps forge more and closer people-to-people connections.”

Chen Dongxiao, president of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, stressed the importance of the CIIE as an in-person expo.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has made exchanges across countries more difficult. Although people can use the Internet to host video meetings, the quality of such meetings is lower and it cannot replace face-toface talks,” Chen said.

“The pandemic, coupled with international political, economic, and security tensions, poses a grave challenge to the building of trust through communication,” he said. “The CIIE, which has been held offline in the past three years, has played an irreplaceable role in increasing understanding among people.”
