I was typing papers for new school students when Mama called. We talked about some senseless things for a while before she finally told me about it. “Well, Donner, theres this class up at the high school this summer,” she said. “They say they can teach me to read and write. Im trying to decide whether...”

“Of course, you should do it! That would be so wonderful. Id be so proud of you,” I answered. She was 63 and had survived two alcoholic (酗酒的) husbands and was an expert at buying and selling garage sale junk to keep food on her own table and buy Christmas presents for me and my brothers kids. She used food stamps to buy food and other goods. Mama laughed, seemingly with relief. “Well, you know, Id about gotten used to being the silliest old lady in town,” she said.

It turned out that her neighbor had found the class for her. The young woman had been doing Mamas “business” for a while in my absence, helping to allay my guilt (內(nèi)疚) over leaving Mississippi. The friend was a little crazy, but Mama liked her. She was real and, by then, I hated pretension as much as Mama did. When I was little she would tell me, “Remember, Donner Kay, nobodys better than anybody else.”

Three months into the class, Mama left a message on my answering machine, “Donner, I taught a class tonight!” She was almost singing the words. “The teacher let me teach the class!” She soon wrote me a letter in a careful, boxy print I had never seen, instead of the strange way she had written long family names she had memorized.

The next time I flew home to visit, we both laughed like 12-year-olds as she read words from billboards (告示牌) on the way from the airport. Her grammar was getting better. She kept talking about her classes and the other students.

24. Why did Donners mother phone her according to Paragraph 1?

A. To advise Donner to take a course. B. To support Donner.

C. To tell Donner her decision. D. To ask for advice.

25. What can replace the underlined word “allay” in Paragraph 3?

A. Admit. B. Forget. C. Punish. D. Reduce.

26. How did the mother feel when she wrote a message for Donner?

A. Astonished. B. Delighted. C. Confused. D. Worried.

27. What can we know about the mother from the last paragraph?

A. Her progress. B. The effect on her learning.

C. Her difficulty in learning. D. The grammar she learned.

The Carnival of Brazil is an yearly festival held 46 days before Easter, especially famous for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to regret Christs death and prepare for his coming back to life.

Modern Brazilian Carnival dates back to Rio de Janeiro in 1641. It originally copied the European form of the festival, later taking in elements of native American and African cultures.

In the late 19th century, the strings were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were pageant (盛裝游行) groups that paraded (游行) through city avenues performing on instruments and dancing. Today they are known as blocks, consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes or special T-shirts with themes or logos. Blocks are generally connected with particular neighborhoods; they include both a music group and a lot of revelers (狂歡者).

Block parades have become an expressive feature of Rios Carnival. Today, the groups are more than 100 in total and increase each year. Blocks can be formed by small or large groups of revelers with a clear title. Before the show, they gather in a square, and then parade in sections of the city, often near the beach.

Carnival time in Rio is very interesting, but is also the most expensive time to visit Rio. Hotel rooms and other lodgings can be up to four times more expensive than the regular rates. There are big crowds at some locations and life is far from ordinary in many parts of town.

28. What can we infer from Paragraph 1 about the Carnival of Brazil?

A. It is often held after Easter. B. It is from Easter and Saturnalia.

C. It is mainly to celebrate the birth of Christ. D. It is a time to get rid of bad things for a new life.

29. When did modern Brazilian Carnival begin?

A. About 100 years ago. B. About 380 years ago.

C. Over five centuries ago. D. Less than two centuries ago.

30. What can we learn about the blocks in Rio de Janeiro?

A. They always parade through countryside villages.

B. There are no more than 100 blocks today.

C. They are dressed in their special way.

D. They dont parade before the show.

31. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. The carnival in Rio de Janeiro. B. Famous carnivals in the world.

C. The way the carnival was introduced in Brazil. D. The happy life of the people in Rio de Janeiro.

D

Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension (緊張) and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact, it is a silly remark that being upset all the time can result in premature graying (過早老齡化). Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives tale could be true.

As one ages, the hairs on the head also age. In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and hurt when moved and skin wears and becomes wrinkled (有皺紋的). Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens.

When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment (色素) is also added to them. However, as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.

Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body. It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to lose some hair. It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this.

On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension. Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations.

32. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A. Skin becomes wrinkled with age. B. Every part of the body ages with age.

C. Hairs will grow weak but not die. D. Most parts of the body is replaced with age.

33. What might play the most important role in the graying process?

A. Genetics and sleeping time. B. Genetics and drinking water.

C. Food and living environment. D. The amount of pigment and genetics.

34. The author tells us continuous pressure may result in a persons ___ .

A. fitness B. fatness C. hair loss D. weight loss

35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Stress causing gray hair is still in question. B. Gray hair has nothing to do with tension.

C. Stressful situations could be of benefit. D. Worry and tension harm human body.

第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

The 15-minute City

I would like to offer a concept of cities that goes against modern ones. 36 Such cities should be designed within the distance of a 15-minute walk or bike ride.

What do we need to create 15-minute cities? First, we should start asking questions. We need to look hard at how to use our square meters. For instance, what is that space for? Who is using it and how? We should understand what resources we have and how they are used. Then we need to ask what services are available. We also have to ask ourselves: How do we work? 37

How do we get this done? 38 Mayor (市長) Anne Hidalgo has suggested proximity (靠近), which includes a massive decentralization, developing new services for each of the districts—a reduction of traffic by increasing bike lanes into spaces of leisure; new economic models to encourage local shops; building more green spaces. Thats actually a golden rule for the 15-minute city: every square meter thats already built should be used for different things.

39 First, the rhythm of the city should follow humans, not cars. Second, each square meter should serve different purposes. Finally, neighborhoods should be designed so that we can live and work in them without having to constantly commute (通勤) elsewhere.

Its funny if you think of it: many modern cities are designed for saving time, and yet so much time is lost to commuting, sitting in traffic jams or driving to a mall. 40

A. I call it the 15-minute city.

B. The 15-minute should have three key features.

C. Citizens are actively involved in participation.

D. Why is the place I live in here, and work is far away?

E. The first city to adopt the 15-minute city idea is Paris.

F. The 15-minute city idea answers the questions of saving time.

G. A different pace of life—a 15-minute pace can be just impossible.

36. ______? 37. ______? 38. ______? 39. ______? 40. ______
