“I wandered to this town like a drifting cloud,
Where I met and feasted with my old dearest friend.
May you always remember our happy memory in Chongqing.
Our friendship will be as profound as the deepest pool.
May you have a career as accomplished as Lu Jia’s,
And may you be as well-traveled as Xuanzang.
Though we have met and parted so quickly,
The time has come for us to sail far on the sea.”
This seven-character metrical poem was composed by Robert Hans van Gulik when he served as a diplomat in Chongqing. Heavy with historical allusions and imbued with profound feelings, the poem helped introduce the Chinese culture to the Western World and vice versa.

Novel Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee by Robert Hans van Gulik
The event had a full house at the Qi’An Office, Huguang Guild Hall in Chongqing. When“solving the cases”, the children worked hard to find clues and finally untangled the mysteries by using their skills of reasoning.
The well-choreographed play brought the house down, with continuous applauds from the audience. Also worth mentioning was the wonderful Sichuan Opera face-changing performance during the show, which demonstrated to the guests the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture.
