Qipao became popular in the 1920s andremained as the “national clothing” until the1950s. At first, people made it wide, coveringmost parts of the body. Yet it was notbeautiful and people wanted a more beautifulkind of clothing. So in the 1930s, peoplemade the traditional qipao tight to show thebeauty of a womans body. Now, lots ofwomen still like to wear it.
The Chinese tunic suit looked simple butgood, so it quickly became popular amongChinese men in the mid-20th century.Although other kinds of clothing have takenits place now, leaders of China still wear itwhen going to important events.
