About a week after Glenda and Raphi Savitz welcomed their daughter Samantha to the world, they learned that she was deaf.

“She was the first deaf person we had known, so obviously it was really a challenge,” Glenda says. “We knew right away that we had to get involved in the deaf community and get immersed (專心的) in American Sign Language (ASL).” What the new parents didnt know then was that their new neighbors would decide to start learning ASL, too.

Its a place people dont want to leave. Its also a place where people are serious about being good neighbors. McNeil and three other neighbors quietly signed up for local adult education classes in ASL. As with any new languages, learning ASL takes time. But McNeil says the classes are working. “We know how to say, ‘Are you riding your bike? or ‘You have pretty new pink sports shoes. Theres a dog across the street that she loves to play with. So we all know the sign for ‘dog.”

The classes have been such a hit that there are now two offerings, on two different weeknights, bringing the number of neighbors learning the language to about 40.

“Were just thankful that we live here and that were surrounded with these wonderful people,” Raphi Savitz says. And theyre not the only ones who say theyre grateful.

“We are really enjoying the whole process, not only learning ASL, but learning together,” says McNeil. “Its made our neighborhood a closer place.”

But her bigger goal is to change minds. “Men think that women are only meant to do housework and give birth to children,” Anjum said. “We have to change this thinking. If we have equality under the law, how can society look down on women?”

The campaign is having success in influencing some women. Aslima Khan is 30 years old. All day long she works with the animals, finds firewood, cleans, cooks and washes dishes. She is determined to educate her three daughters. She wants to make sure they can escape her life story of hard, backbreaking work. “If I had studied, I would have been saved from this,” she said.
