I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six year, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didnt think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—theres a dark period in-between when youre neither one thing nor the other. Youre out for dinner and people ask what you do, and youre too ashamed to say, “Well, Im writing a novel, but Im not quite sure if Im going to get there.” My confidence died. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent who said I should send my novel off to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, theres no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract (合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding.

Psychologists have long believed that human beings have a fairly consistent “negativity bias (偏見)” that leads us to pay more attention to negative thoughts, feelings and events than to positive ones. 1 There is a positive explanation for the question. After all, we are motivated to grow after a misstep. However, we cant abandon (放縱) ourselves to the negativity bias forever. How? 2
Practice positivity. Like your muscles, your thought patterns respond to how they are used and exercised. You dont have to erase the negativity bias from your mind. 3 For example, set calendar reminders throughout your day to express your thanks or simply adjust your body language so youre holding yourself with strength and confidence.
4 Were living in a time of rapid development, and everyone is facing great pressure. Our negativity biases call our attention toward the reality. But we are well served to also see the opportunities in this moment: Maybe there is a chance for you to become a better self or even achieve success if you face the pressure positively.
Ask for positive reminders. Get in the habit of checking in with people who are with you when goodness finds you today. Mention to them, “That is an unexpected bit of praise from the boss, isnt it?” 5 And who knows, you may help your friends, family members or co-workers have a more positive day as well!
A. See negativity as an opportunity.
B. Try the following suggested ideas.
C. Instead, practice your positive lifestyle.
D. Its negative influence can never be avoided.
E. Why and how does this phenomenon happen?
F. How do you handle it as you try to live with more positivity?
G. Asking others to confirm your positive insights can facilitate your positivity.

Ever since I graduated from high school Ive worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 oclock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why Im so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the factory, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like downsizing (裁員) and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become only too clear. “This job pays well, but its hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added. When Im back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy rewrites seem too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陳腐的) now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.

Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award—Chinas top award for theater and opera performances, started to learn the traditional art form in 1977.
Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed frequently, and was recruited by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe (劇團) when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupes invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies and not drop out of school. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly and showed great sincerity, Wangs parents finally agreed.
Learning the traditional art form was never easy. Wang started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing the roles of martial artists at first, she had to spend extra time practicing kung fu movements. Years later, Wang used the word “unimaginable” to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains (凍瘡) on her hands when training in classrooms with broken windows. “But I was young and determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,” Wang recalls.
Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show The Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,” Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it has stayed with me since.” Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations and helped to promote the art form among young people.
