Dan McKena’s high school construction class has quietly worked on charitable projects to benefit the Westerly, Rhode Island, community for more than two decades. That suddenly changed when the Internet caught wind that more than ten of McKena’s students at Westerly High School banded together to build a bus stop for a local school student who is wheelchair-dependent.

It all started when 5-year-old Ryder Killam’s father, Tim, posted on social media in September that the family was seeking a bus stop to replace their bus shelter. Tim Killam was trying to find a way to keep his son, who is completely wheelchair-dependent, sheltered from the unpleasant New England weather while waiting for the school bus. The post caught the attention of a local guidance counselor (顧問) who told the Killams to reach out to McKena.

McKena had been sitting with one of his students, Mason Heald, trying to figure out a senior project when Tim Killam’s email reached his inbox. It was perfect timing. “I looked at him. I said, ‘You’re designing a bus stop,’” McKena said. With the help of 14 other students, Heald got to work.

After about a month of hard work, Killam’s replacement—which was designed so he could actually sit in this chair and see the bus—was finished. The end result was a hut (小屋) with two windows that is up to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.

After the community caught wind of the story, someone dropped off a blanket (毯子) for Ryder, Tim Killam said. The Killams were blown away by the support from the community.

“It makes getting on and off the bus perfect,” Tim Killam said. “The size is perfect and because it’s up to ADA standards, we are able to be inside with him. Ryder can get anxious, so having one of us with him is so important.”

24. What made McKena’s students widely known on the Internet?

A. Their effort to get support for their charitable projects.

B. Their bravery in following their dreams.

C. Their achievements in construction.

D. Their making of a bus stop shelter.

25. Why did Tim Killam contact McKena?

A. To look for help. B. To apply for a job.

C. To provide a service. D. To ask for some information.

26. What do the underlined words “blown away” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A. Disappointed. B. Frightened. C. Impressed. D. Limited.

27. What can we infer from Tim Killam’s words in the last paragraph?

A. He is worried about the quality of the bus stop.

B. He is satisfied with the replacement.

C. His son is afraid to take a bus alone.

D. His son is deeply inspired.

What would it be like to live on Mars? Volunteers are spending eight months in an area that looks much like the surface of Mars. They are separated high on top of Mauna Loa, a volcanic mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii, living on a simulated (模擬的), or make--believe, Mars Base.

The project called HI-SEAS is in the charge of Kim Binsted. She says this wild environment is as close to Mars as you can find on Earth. Because it is so high, the land is not warm or rich with plants, like the rest of Hawaii.

“You will see there is really no visible plant life or animal life. And you have got this wonderful volcanic material.”

Mauna Loa, 2,500 meters above sea level, is very similar to Olympus Mons on Mars and almost as tall as that Martian mountain. When measured from its base, deep in the ocean, Mauna Loa is the second largest mountain in our solar system, after the one on Mars.

The HI-SEAS members are mostly self--sufficient. Food and other supplies are brought to them. But the persons bringing those supplies cannot communicate with volunteers inside the base.

Kim Binsted says this experiment looks at how the astronauts get along with each other. “We study how well they work together, how we can keep them happy and supported, and not wanting to kill each other over such long time.”

Members communicate with the outside world through e-mail and blogs. They also produce videos on the YouTube website.

“I am really enjoying this opportunity to live in it and pretend that I’m on Mars and get to learn all sorts of new skills,” one of them said.

“Whoever gets there first, the trip will not be easy,” says Kim Binsted. “It is going to be challenging.”

28. What can we learn about Olympus Mons?

A. It is 2,500 meters above sea level. B. It is similar to Mauna Loa.

C. It is the second largest mountain on Earth. D. It is on the Big Island of Hawaii.

29. What is the purpose of the experiment?

A. To set up a space station.

B. To explore a new planet.

C. To study how the astronauts treat each other.

D. To prove human can live in terrible conditions.

30. How can members keep in touch with the outside world?

A. On the Internet. B. By telephone. C. By writing letters. D. Over the radio.

31. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Volunteers First Explore Mars B. Volunteers Experience Life in Hawaii

C. Volunteers Get a Taste of Mars D. Volunteers Study the Environment on Mars

Global warming is one of the most serious dangers to our mother earth. Due to global warming, the ice of the glaciers (冰川) will melt (融化) down one day, the sea level will increase from the present level, and a lot of diseases will occur. To stop all these bad happenings, global warming must be stopped as soon as possible. All necessary steps should be taken so as to save life on earth.

There are a lot of causes of global warming. Some of these causes are natural. But some causes are produced by humans. People should use the following methods to reduce them.

One should reduce the use of electrical appliances which give off harmful gases and is a big reason for this problem.

Become a vegetarian. It will reduce the raising of animals for the purpose of food, and so reduce the production of harmful gases.

Use the rule of RRR in your daily life. RRR means Reduce, Reuse amp; Recycle. By following RRR people can reduce the waste of energy. Therefore, less fuel (燃料) will be used to produce energy, thus reducing the greenhouse effect. For example, recycle paper for further use.

Among all the methods of stopping the greenhouse effect, the most effective one is to plant more trees because plants or trees take in the harmful gases in the environment.

The use of fluorescent bulbs (熒光燈) should be increased because these bulbs produce few greenhouse gases.

Use renewable energy resources like solar energy, which can help in reducing the production of harmful gases.

Tell your friends and neighbors the above methods. And remember: if you stop the causes of global warming, the earth will stop warming.

32. According to the text, what can global warming lead to?

①The decrease in glaciers. ②The rise of the sea level.

③The increase in diseases. ④The decrease of wild animals.

A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④

33. Why does the author advise people to become vegetarians?

A. To help protect animals. B. To reduce harmful gases.

C. To get along with animals. D. To live a healthier life in this way.

34. What is the best way to stop the greenhouse effect according to the text?

A. Using fewer electrical appliances. B. Using fluorescent bulbs.

C. Planting more trees. D. Using solar energy.

35. What does the author mainly tell us about global warming?

A. How it affects the environment. B. What concerns about it.

C. How to reduce it. D. What leads to it.
