Shenzhou-18 Mission Returns Samples for Extraterrestrial Habitation Research

The Shenzhou-18 spacecraft has returned to Earth with 34.6kilograms of experimental samples from the space station， encompassingmicroorganisms， alloy materials， and nanomaterials that aredifficult to prepare on Earth， Science and Technology Daily reportedon November 4.

The retrieved samples will help advance the development ofspace fiber lasers， facilitate the creation of extraterrestrial materials，and assist researchers to explore the prospects of Earth life spreadingthrough the cosmos.

The Shenzhou-18’s return capsule， carrying three Chinese astronauts，returned to Earth on the early morning of November 4， aftercompleting a six-month space station mission.

The scientific experimental samples brought back by the spacecraftincluded a total of 55 types， spanning 28 science projectsacross areas such as space life sciences， space materials science，and microgravity combustion science.

The life science specimens comprise methane-generatingarchaea， radiation-resistant microbes and microorganisms thatinhabit rocks. These will help lay the scientific groundwork for investigatingthe potential habitability of extraterrestrial environments andassess the capacity of microorganisms to adapt to the challenges ofouter space.

Part of the samples also included high-temperature resistant alloys， fiber optics， and optical coatings. These innovative materialshold the potential of revolutionizing the manufacturing of nextgenerationaerospace turbine blades， space-adapted fiber lasers，and precision medical repairs.

The spacecraft also brought back nanoparticles derived frommethane combustion， which will facilitate the future synthesis of criticalparticulate materials for extraterrestrial environments.
