A British woman who won a $1 million prize after she was named the World’s Best Teacher will use the cash to bring inspirational figures into UK schools.
Andria, a north London secondary school teacher, said she wanted to bring about a classroom revolution (變革). “We are going to make a change,” she said. “I’ve started a project to improve the teaching of the arts in our schools.”
The project results from the difficulties many schools have in getting artists of any kind—whether an up-and-coming (有前途的) local musician or a major movie star—into schools to work with and inspire children. Andria has worked on the project at Alperton Community School, her place of work for the past twelve years. “I’ve seen those magic moments when children are talking to someone they are inspired by—their eyes are shining and their faces light up,” she said. “We need artists more than ever in our schools.”
Artist Michael said, “Andria’s brilliant project to bring artists from all fields into direct contact with children is particularly welcome at a time when the arts are being downgraded (低估) in schools.” “It was a mistake to see the arts as unnecessary,” he added.
Historian Sir Simon is also a supporter of the project. He said that arts education in schools was not just an add-on. “It is absolutely necessary. The future depends on creativity and creativity depends on the young.”

Since humans sent the first satellite to space in the 1950s, scientists have been studying an important topic: how to grow food in space if humans will one day live there. A recent experiment at the Tiangong Space Station makes a big step forward.
Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings (幼苗) during the Shenzhou XⅣ task. “The rice seedlings are growing very well,” said Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since the rice experiment began, the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety (品種) have reached a height of 30 centimeters. The seedlings of the short shoot rice variety have grown to 5 centimeters.
While there have been other rice experiments in space, this one is the first of its kind to produce the complete life cycle of a plant—it begins with a seed and ends with a grown plant producing new seeds.
Such food-growing experiments are not just for astronauts. They can also solve food problems on Earth. By sending seeds to space, we can change the genes of seeds, thanks to micro-gravity, the special space light and the lack (缺乏) of air. Then, the production of these seeds is greatly increased on Earth.
For more than 30 years, China has developed over 260 new types of seeds in space. They are widely planted in the field every year.
According to Yao Tong, an engineer from a research center, 30 percent of strawberries sold in Beijing are “space strawberries”, which are the size of eggs. The center has also produced “space tomatoes” with the production increased by 30 percent, and “space bananas” with a growth shortened from 13 months to 9 months.

Have you found that it’s hard to take your eyes off your phone? Do you feel left-out not being invited to a party? Do you think that others are having more fun, and living better lives than you? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, you may be suffering from the Fear of Missing Out, or “FOMO”. But, don’t worry, FOMO influences many people in the modern world. You are not alone.
FOMO has become a common social situation in recent years. The growth of mobile technology and social media is where FOMO comes in. New mobile technologies help us connect with anyone at all times. However, it is a double-edged sword (雙刃劍). Today, most of social media are filled with photos and updates which only show the best parts of others’ lives. That can leave us feeling that our own lives are imperfect.
So, what can we do to fight against FOMO? One idea is to cut down the time you spend on social media. Setting time limits (時(shí)限) for how long you read through or use social media each day will be helpful. Also, it’s a good way to just focus on what you have but not what you don’t. What’s more, keep a so-called gratitude journal (感恩日志), where you write down three things you are grateful for every day. With these tips, FOMO can be beaten, and you will be able to have a more enjoyable life.

Slowly but surely, Amy and her grandparents were making progress. Boxes of all sizes were placed on top of each other throughout the house. Amy’s grandparents had lived in the house for many years and they had collected many things. The dining room was full of memories. Amy’s grandfather kept many fine dinner plates from his hometown.
After carefully wrapping up (包裹) the plates and putting them into a box, Amy lifted it up and moved it out of the way. But the box was too heavy. It suddenly fell from her arms and dropped to the floor. All three of them heard the plates shatter.
“I’m sorry!” Amy apologized.
“It’s okay,” her grandfather said quietly. “It was an accident.”
They opened the box and, sure enough, many of the plates were broken. Only a few remained whole. Looking at the small pieces, Amy felt really terrible. She knew these plates were passed down from her great grandparents and…
“Don’t worry,” her grandmother said, patting her on the back. Carefully, they put the broken pieces into a rubbish bag.
They continued packing for a little while, but Amy still felt very sorry. She was trying very hard to think of a way to make it up for her grandparents.
Soon, Amy’s father came.
“I have to go,” she said. “Dad is here to pick me up.”
She kissed her grandparents both, picked up the bag of the broken pieces and left.
The following day, Amy went to an art store and bought everything she needed. Then she started to work. She used a thin board as the base. Then she took out the colorful plate pieces and glued them in a creative way on the board. When it was dry, Amy wrapped it up.
A few days later, Amy’s family had a big dinner at her grandparents’ new house. She handed her gift to her grandparents.

What would you do if you see an old man lying on the side of the road? If you know first aid (急救) and have received first aid training, you can provide him with help before professional help arrives.
Experts say the first 10 minutes after an accident is important for saving a life. Just as its name suggests, first aid is the first steps before a person gets professional medical help. It includes making the person stay safe, and helping him or her feel better and stay calm. It also includes getting help, either by telling an adult or calling 120.
First aid is an important life skill that everyone should learn. By learning it, you may save someone’s life someday. But in China, less than 1 percent of adults have first aid knowledge. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has realized this. Last August, it asked all public schools in China to provide first aid courses as part of their health classes.
A research showed that 64.6 percent of schools already have these courses. However, the results have not been good. According to the MOE, future results are expected to be better.
Other countries have also made a big effort to provide first aid training for their people. The US government said police officers, firefighters, middle school teachers and college teachers must receive CPR (心肺復(fù)蘇) training. In Switzerland, all people learn first aid skills. And in Germany, 80 percent of people have received first aid training.

Vicuna is a small town in the north of Chile. It is a great place for watching the stars. Although it is near the sea, the cold, wet air from the coast does not bring clouds. Instead, dry winds from the desert keep the clouds away at night. In fact, the skies are so clear in Vicuna. So it is possible for people to see many stars. They can be seen only with special instruments in other parts of the world.
In Vicuna, star systems far away can be seen without an instrument. This is why people choose the town as the home of sky observatories (天文臺(tái)). One of them, the Mamalluca, is quite different from those only used by scientists. It is for tourists who like to look at the stars. Around the whole year, hotels in the town accommodate thousands of tourists from all over the world to see the night sky. The tourists live in the hotel and spend a lot of money there. The cloudless sky is a moneymaker for the town. So the town plans to set up even more observatories in another few years.
However, the town faced a serious problem. As the town grew, more streetlights were added. The streetlights made it more and more difficult to see the stars at night clearly. Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank (存錢(qián)罐) onto the living room floor and immediately started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack.
“What are you doing with that money?” Jackie asked her granddaughter.
“I’m taking it to school,” Sunshine replied. “I’m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn’t get milk—her mom doesn’t have milk money and I do.”
Jackie’s heart melted at Sunshine’s words. Choked (哽噎) with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter closely and strongly in her arms.

One day, while looking through a flower list that she often ordered from, a picture of a plant immediately caught her eye. She had never seen a flower like it before. “I have to have it,” she said to herself, and she immediately ordered it. When it arrived, she found a place to plant it. She planted it at the bottom of a stone wall at the back of her yard. It grew vigorously, with beautiful green leaves all over it. Day after day, she continued to take care of it, but there were no flowers.
One morning, as she stood looking at the plant, she felt disappointed. She wanted to know why her plant had not bloomed.
However, at this moment, her disabled neighbor invited her to his yard and said, “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I have enjoyed the flowers that you planted.” The young woman walked through the gate into her neighbor’s yard. She saw that on the other side of the wall the plant was full of flowers.
They were, indeed, the most beautiful flowers she had ever seen. The plant had grown up through the crevices (裂縫) in the wall.
Just because you can’t see the results of your labor, it does not mean that there isn’t any fruit.

DOGTV is a television channel (頻道) for dogs. It first appeared in America in 2012. Now, it is available in 14 countries, including Australia, France, the UK, etc.
Believe it or not, DOGTV didn’t start as a TV channel for dogs. The idea for Pet TV came from Ron Levi. To let his cat Charlie have fun while he was out, Ron did some research and began to work with scientists and pet experts to bring his idea to life. To their surprise, dogs showed more interest in different kinds of programs than cats. Pet TV finally became DOGTV.
DOGTV was developed to make stay-at-home dogs happy. It provides enjoyable videos and music for dogs. Each program is about three to six minutes. The programs are different from time to time during the day. In the morning, programs are to get dogs out of bed. In the middle of the day, programs are to make dogs become relaxed while they are at home alone. Dogs are scared of things like cars or loud noises. So DOGTV has special programs with pictures and sounds to help them get used to those things. The channel even has educational programs on health and training.
DOGTV creates proper shows for dogs’ seeing and hearing. Dogs are color-blind (色盲). They can only see blue and yellow, and they can’t see red or green. So the DOGTV shows might sound and look a little different to people’s ears and eyes. But don’t worry, DOGTV has programs for pet owners, too.

Chinese New Year Painting, or nianhua in Chinese, is a kind of traditional painting to be put up on walls and windows during the Spring Festival. Its bright colors and different subjects show the Chinese great expectation for happiness and wealth.
Chinese New Year Painting is an old handicraft. Its original (最初的) form was a picture of a door god during the Tang Dynasty. Later, more subjects such as the Kitchen God, women and babies were included. As the Chinese New Year arrives, every family puts up its New Year Painting in order to say goodbye to the past and welcome the future. Secondly, they make the simple sketch on the wood board and print a few samples (樣品). Thirdly, they add color to the sample. Lola is our cat. She used to live in a large waste bin, so when we brought her home, she chose to keep her distance. The period of getting her trust was long, but in the end, we succeeded. One day, however, she suddenly disappeared.
Sometimes Lola slept in bed with us, and most of the time she would stay in the yard. So when she didn’t come home one night, we went all out to look for her.
I spoke with neighbors about her disappearance and heard some awful things about some people who were killing cats. We printed posters and hung them up around the neighborhood. I wrote an open letter to all of our neighbors. I even took a day off from work and stayed up all night, fearing the worst.
The next morning, a very nice woman left us a voicemail saying that she thought she had found our cat. We drove to a nearby Walmart parking lot and got our cat back.
For the last two years, I kept reminding myself to find this woman and thank her for finding our cat. Time went past until a few months ago. One day, Susie Hansen, the boss of an animal protection organization where I am working now, asked me to go to Walmart to buy some pet food. As I headed there, I remembered that day when that woman told us the news about Lola. At that time, I still had not given up hope of meeting her.
Recently, I looked at my phone and wondered why I had Susie’s number saved as “Susie Cat Finder”. Finally, I put it together. It was our very own Susie Hansen who brought our Lola back to us! What a lovely coincidence (巧合)! Now I find out that she is my boss. Isn’t that amazing?

The color green is more than just a color. It is known as a symbol of health, youth and life. Around the world green is also now known as a symbol for the environment and the protection of the environment.
People are now living in a “throw-away society”, using things for a short time and then throwing them away. What are the causes of this? Firstly, there are too many goods to choose from. For example, if you are bored with your shoes which are worn for a few months, you will choose to exchange them for a new pair from the market and throw away the old ones. Secondly, many young people want to keep up with technology innovation. For example, many young people buy new mobile phones and throw away their old ones. As a result, it leads to an increase in the number of rubbish.
Recycling has never been easier. Tell your mom or dad you want to become “Chief of Recycling” for your family—you know what things you can recycle, and find a place to keep them. Encourage everyone in your house to think whether things can be reused or recycled before they’re thrown away.
Who knew being green would taste so good? Take a look at your own backyard. Is there a place where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? If so, get there and get your hands dirty. Then you can watch with pride as your tree takes root, and your garden plants grow into big plants full of red tomatoes or tiny, juicy strawberries.

Computers are wonderful machines. The Internet is also wonderful. But some people spend too much time online. They can’t stop. Doctors say this is a new illness called Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) (互聯(lián)網(wǎng)成癮癥).
People with IAD are online a lot. They spend many hours chatting with their friends or playing games online. Many people with IAD spend more time surfing the Internet than staying with their family or friends. Some people with IAD even give up their jobs!
Do you have IAD? Think about the following questions carefully: How many hours a day are you online? When you are not online, do you want to play computer games or check your messages? When you are online, do you often lose track of time? Do you get angry when you can’t play computer games?
If you have IAD, what should you do? Dr Ivan Goldberg and Dr Kimberly S. Young give some advice. First, ask yourself, “Why am I online a lot?” Then try to take a break. Remya Jose, who lived in a small village in India, learned that her mother was ill and her father would have to spend his time caring for her. As a result, she and her twin sister had to do most of the housework—including washing clothes. To make things even more difficult, the Jose family couldn’t afford an electric washing machine. Instead, the two girls would have to do the washing all by hand in the local river, and then carefully carry everything back to their home—a task that took several hours.
Being a good student interested in engineering, Remya wanted to make a washing machine which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they worked. Remya then designed a machine that used bicycle pedals (踏板) and chain. To find those things, she and her father went to a local shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, but also helped her make the machine!
Here’s how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder (圓筒) to hold the clothes and put it in a cube (立方體). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing machine.
Remya’s invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine—and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Remya’s washing machine was chosen as India’s best innovation!
“Remya Jose made a difference,” said Jeanine Thomas of The Borden Project. “Her invention saves time and money for the world’s poor people.”

What is your first impression of bamboo in China? Is it only a kind of plant on the food list of pandas? No! It is also used in single bamboo drifting (漂移), an intangible cultural heritage (非物質(zhì)文化遺產(chǎn)) passed from the ancient times among the people in Guizhou Province.
Single bamboo drifting has been performed for more than 2,000 years. In the past, people who lived on the bank of the Chishui River used it as a method to go across the river. Now, with the development of modern society, this skill has been regarded as a sport or a special way of performance by local people.
Middle school students in Guizhou practice the sport and compete in the Chinese National Games. The requirements of the sport are simple, yet demanding! Athletes must balance on a bamboo pole, only as wide as one’s foot, and guide it down the river with a thin stick. But there’s more than just guiding.
While keeping balance on the narrow bamboo pole with the thin stick, the athletes are performing skills and tricks. Jumping and push﹣ups are some of the most common ones, and those who are more experienced often use their imagination to try out more difficult moves.
Yang Liu, a 28-year-old “water fairy (水仙)” from Zunyi, Guizhou, dancing on the river in traditional Chinese costume, is an inheritor (繼承人) of single bamboo drifting. For over ten years, combining drifting with dancing, Yang has put fresh energy into this traditional art. It’s not easy to stand, let alone dance on a single bamboo. Artificial intelligence, or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies. AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition (人臉識(shí)別) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to check public information.
AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don’t have this ability. Car makers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do.
Service robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.
AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even take the place of us in many jobs.

If someone said they’d pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for 6 years, would you do it? Could you? An American mom challenged her son to do just that, and he succeeded.
Sivert Klefsaas is the youngest of Lorna Gold﹣strand Klefsaas’ four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. It was influencing their feelings, as well as their friendships. So, Lorna thought, “If I could, I’d be willing to do whatever to keep Sivert off social media as long as I could, whatever that looks like.” And that’s where the idea for this challenge came from.
It all started when Lorna heard about a similar “16 for 16 challenge” on the radio, where a mother called Amanda Green gave her daughter Teresa $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. So, Lorna decided to create her own “18 for 18 challenge”. Not only did Sivert finally complete this challenge, but he would do it again, too.
“It wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and I didn’t think about it much during the 6 years,” Sivert said. “As time went on, it was more of a pride thing.”
He had his friends keep him up to date on the latest information. Sivert added, “I got to avoid all the unnecessary things that were on there. It also meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead.”
Now that he’s done with the challenge, Sivert joined Instagram, but has no plans to let social media define (定義) him.
“Social media is great. We certainly need to use it,” Sivert said. “But also make sure you spend time in other areas of your life, especially those personal relationships.”
Still, Lorna is proud of her son’s success. “We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy using of it,” Lorna said.

More and more people in China are now showing parts of their lives to the world by videos on their phones. Some people send videos of personal events like holidays and weddings.
Using live streaming (網(wǎng)絡(luò)直播) is particularly popular among the people aged from 18 to 35. Even the teachers give lessons by live streaming. Besides leaving reviews on the screen, people can also communicate directly with the hosts by buying virtual (虛擬的) gifts such as flowers, toys and cars for them online. One of the most famous examples was the Olympic swimmer Fu Yuanhui. She did one-hour live streaming which attracted more than 11 million viewers.
What’s more, live streaming lets users communicate with strangers and express themselves. A 19-year-old college student called Nic Li says she spends three to four hours each week chatting and singing with viewers through one App. “Sometimes I feel lonely and want to talk to people,” she says. “I feel nice when viewers are paying attention to me.”
However, there are worries about the misuse of live streaming. An influencer promised to correct her unsuitable and impolite language after she was warned by the officials. As there are more than 80 Apps and 300 websites for live streaming in China, the Internet regulator (監(jiān)管機(jī)構(gòu)) can hardly monitor the contents (內(nèi)容) all the time.

Are you still reading paper books? Nowadays more and more people prefer to read novels online. This new way of reading is convenient. For example, when people take a subway or wait for the bus, they just need to read on their mobile phones instead of opening books. And it also costs little, as many of the online novels are free to readers.
Some online novels have attractive plots (情節(jié)) and they have made their writers famous and rich. These writers have many fans on the Internet and many of their works have been made into films and TV plays, such as Empresses in the Palace and My Sunshine.
However, not all the online novels are good to read, especially for teenagers who are less able to tell the right from the wrong than adults. Melody, a woman from Shenzhen, said, “Parents and teachers should pay more attention to what teenagers read online. In fact, some online novels are written so hurriedly and randomly (隨意地) that they are full of improper plots which may be pernicious to teenagers, so I don’t think it’s good for my students to read online novels.”

When Ben delivered (遞送) milk to my home one morning before Christmas, he wasn’t his usual sunny self. He told me a customer had left without paying the bill, $79, nor leaving her new address. So it meant that he had to cover the loss.
“She was a pretty woman,” he said, “with six children and another on the way. She was always saying, ‘I’m going to pay you soon when my husband gets a second job.’ I believed her, but she left. Isn’t it annoying?”
“Give her the milk. Make it a Christmas present to the kids who need it,” I said.
The holidays came and went. On a sunny January morning two weeks later, Ben was rushing to deliver milk when he saw a woman running down the street, waving money. He recognized her immediately—the woman who didn’t pay her bill.
“I’m so sorry,” she said. “I really have been meaning to pay you.”
She explained that her husband had come home one night and announced he’d found a cheaper apartment. He’d also got a new job. With all that happened, she’d forgotten to leave the new address. “But I’ve been saving,” she said. “Here’s the money toward the bill.”

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the population of the world were hunter-gatherers, small, closely connected groups developed their own speech different from each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages among them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages also became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of education, especially globalization and better communications in the past few years, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution (分布) of these languages is hugely unbalanced. The general rule is that warm, pleasant areas have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet areas have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone has well over 800. The median number (中位數(shù)) of speakers is only 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. For example, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
8. What can we learn about languages in hunter-gatherer times?

Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a telepresence system (遠(yuǎn)程遙控系統(tǒng)) allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

Historic Canal (運(yùn)河) Places to Visit
If you want to visit a city with canals, is Venice the only choice you know? Let’s know more about these places.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Beautiful canals probably aren’t the first thing that comes to your mind when you are thinking of Amsterdam, but Amsterdam actually has more canals than Venice. The first canals were built in the Middle Ages and Amsterdam has four main canals now. Today, you can see the classic buildings, along any of the canals. In 2009, UNESCO named Amsterdam’s central canal ring a World Heritage Site.
Stockholm, Sweden
Water makes up nearly one-third of Sweden’s capital across 14 islands. Stockholm, with a name “Beauty on Water”, is connected by a huge canal network and 57 bridges. In winter, when the canals freeze over, locals and tourists visit there for ice-skating, which gives them the feeling like flying.
Bruges, Belgium
Just a short train ride away from Brussels lies Bruges, an old canal town in Belgium. Although it was built in the 13th century, Bruges appears like something out of a fairy-tale: small, cobblestone (鵝卵石) streets, beautiful bridges and tidy houses. Bruges’ canals host a festival every four years, which includes performances by musicians and actors, and lights shining throughout the canals.

One day, the employees (員工) of a company returned from their lunch break and were greeted with a sign on the front door. The sign said, “Yesterday, the person who had stood in your way to success passed away. We invite you to attend the funeral in the hall.” At first, everyone was sad to hear that one of their workmates had died, but after a while, they started feeling curious about who this person might be. The excitement grew as they arrived at the hall to pay their last respects. Everyone wondered, “Who is this person that was in my way? Well, at least he’s no longer here!”
One by one, the employees got closer to the coffin (棺材). When they looked inside it, they were speechless. They stood by the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul (靈魂).
There was a mirror inside the coffin. Everyone who looked inside it could see himself or herself. There was also a sign next to the mirror that said, “There is only one person who can stop you from succeeding: it is YOURSELF.”
You are the only person who can change your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself.

One of the problems with passwords is that users forget them. In order to remember them, people use simple things like their dog’s name, their birth date, or the name of the current month—anything that will give them a cue to remember what their password is.
For the curious hacker (黑客) who has got access to your online account, this is the same as locking your door and leaving the key under the doormat (門(mén)墊).
To create a safe password that is easy to remember, follow these simple steps:
● You should never use personal information as part of your password. It is very easy for someone to guess things like your last name, pet’s name, child’s birth date and other similar details.
● There are tools available to help attackers guess your password. With today’s computing power, it doesn’t take long to try every word in the dictionary and find your password, so it is best if you do not use real words for your password.
● You can make a password much safer by mixing different types of characters. Use some uppercase letters (大寫(xiě)字母) along with lowercase letters, numbers and even special characters such as “amp;” or “%”.
● Rather than trying to remember a password that is created using various character types and is not a word from the dictionary, you can use a “passphrase”. Think of a sentence or a line from a song or poem that you like and create a password using the first letter from each word. For example, rather than just having a password like “yr $ 1 Hes”, you could take a sentence such as “I like to read the About.Com Internet network security website” and change it to a password like “I12rtA!nsws” by using the number “2” for the word “to” and using an exclamation point (感嘆號(hào)) in place of the “I” for “Internet”. You can use a variety of character types and create a safe password that is hard to figure out, but much easier for you to remember.
8. How is a password made up of one’s dog’s name or birth date?
A. It is safe and easy to remember.""""""""""""""""""""" B. It can get hacked easily by attackers.

You have probably heard of Tomato Throwing and the Polar Bear Swim, but have you ever heard of the sport of Cheese Rolling?
Cheese rolling is an event that takes place every spring at Cooper’s Hill, Gloucestershire (a county in England, west of London). People say that cheese rolling is one of Great Britain’s oldest customs. Some say the custom started even before the Romans lived in that country 2,000 years ago. Most say cheese rolling has been going on for at least a couple of centuries as a celebration of the beginning of summer.
Each year, thousands of spectators come to Cooper’s Hill to watch people chase a three-kilogram round Double Gloucester Cheese down the hillside. There are separate races for men and women, and uphill races for boys and girls too. The winners get to keep the rounds of cheese they have tried so hard to catch. However, no one ever catches the cheese because it runs fast down the slope (斜坡) at nearly 110 kilometers per hour!
It is funny to imagine people chasing a little wheel of cheese as it rolls down a hill, but maybe it is not so funny to see it because Cooper’s Hill is very steep (陡峭的). Every year, several of the cheese chasers tumble down the hill. Often, people have their bones broken, but this has not stopped the event from taking place.

At the end of the third term, we had a celebration at our school in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. We played a game of dodgeball (躲避球).
Dodgeball is a game played by two teams of people. Both teams try to hit each other with dodgeballs. The team that the most players are left on the court wins.
I was on the red team. Our competitor, the green team, had many experienced players. So it was not a good start for us at first. We lost many important teammates, while only a few of their unimportant players were knocked out. I got knocked out early as well.
Surprisingly, the rest of teammates tried to knock out a number of our competitors, leaving the green team with fewer numbers.
In our dodgeball game, we didn’t need to completely knock out the other team. All we needed was just to have our last members try their best to avoid being hit during the last five minutes! I shouted, “Guys! Just keep an eye on them and dodge! We have more people on the court! Time is on our side!” The plan worked: All of our members saved, winning the match when the last whistle (哨聲) blew.
Dodgeball, while being a seriously fun and competitive sport, also requires critical thinking (批判性思維). If I learned anything from that game, it was that my brain can get me out of a lot of difficult situations.

From chicken feet socks to sad frog toys, “ugly” products have become popular among young people. On the social media platform Douban, there is a group called the Society for the Protection of Ugly Things with more than 200,000 members. They post “ugly things” they see and buy in daily life.
Some museums have also followed the trend and produced many “ugly” but interesting cultural and creative products. For example, on June 14, 2022, the Gansu Provincial Museum brought out a toy. It’s based on the famous bronze sculpture (青銅雕塑), known as Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow (馬踏飛燕). The toy recreates the sculpture in a cute and cartoon style. This makes the toy more fashionable and more fun.
In fact, some of the “ugly” products can be useful. Yin Peixin, 11, from Hubei has a cabbage dog toy. Unlike others, she doesn’t find it ugly. “It’s creative by mixing cabbage with a dog. The toy makes me feel better when I’m upset. It also serves as a mini pillow to help me have a good sleep,” said Yin.
According to Zhang Lei, a professor at Zhejiang University of Technology, the rise in the popularity of ugly things means that young people want to show that they’re different. They hope to get pleasure and a new taste of life from something a little more “ugly”.

Social media is certainly an interesting place to learn about others’ opinions. You can read everything from strange ideas to true facts and everything in between. But when you are spending time online and reading so many opinions, it’s quite possible that you will sometimes see someone write something that you strongly disagree with.
In fact, you might feel so strongly that you feel like you should reply to this person at once. You might do some research, find some facts of your own and reply to what they’ve written. You finish writing out your reply, click “Post” and win the argument! Except that (只可惜) it’s not really much of a triumph.
Most people don’t like it when other people disagree with their ideas, especially online strangers. It’s unlikely that they will change their opinion just because you argued with them. In fact, it’s possible that you made them feel more confident that they are correct.
And the thing is, when you get in these kinds of fights online, it slowly influences you. You might not know it at first, but the argument that you take part in can actually have a bad effect on your mood. If you argue often, you start to enjoy arguing and then end up doing it even more. It’s a dangerous cycle.
I guess the best thing to do is to tell yourself that most arguments aren’t worth it. There are much better and more interesting things to do, whether online or in real life.
