①閱讀理解

Before I was l6 years old, I spent most of my free time walking and reading outdoors, watching television, or writing. Then, after I turned 16 I became increasingly aware of my appearance, especially my face.I started reading fashion magazines, and comparing my appearance to the models. As a result,I found that my eyes were too small, my nose too large, and my forehead too short.

Throughout college I was a good student, though I struggled with feelings of low self-confidence and a litle depression. After college,I managed an art gallery and found it extremely stressful being on my own for the first time.I spent hours in the morning and evening staring at my face in the mirror and picking at my skin. At one point, the picking caused a smal facial mark. I remember collapsing on a stairway later that day in tears, saddened by the terrible mark Ihad caused.

Then, one day while waiting in line at a grocery store,a magazine cover caught my attention. On the cover I noticed an article titled“Hate your looks? What it means when your miror lies.” The title caught my atention because my friends and family members had always insisted Ilooked fine to them, which was opposite to what the mirror told me.

Inside the magazine was an article about body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) (軀體變形障礙癥). The article described the symptoms, possble causes, and treatment for it. Also,I was happy to read that those with the disorder are often considered to be quite atractive, even while believing that they are ugly.

That article provided me with the information I needed. As a result, I referred myself for treatment. After being in clinical treatment for two years, my symptoms improved. My anxiety about my ugliness became manageable. I stopped staring at my face in the mirror for hours every day.

1.What can welearn about theauthor when shewas16?

A. She hated reading books. B.Shehardlyhadmuch freetime.

3.What is the article in the magazine mainly about?

A.Reasons why mirrors don't lie. B.Information about BDD.

C.Ways to make one attractive. D.Help from others.

4. How does the author feel now about her appearance?

A. Relieved. B. Carefree. C. Pleased. D. Confident.

①閱讀七選五

Being attractive comes more from your personality than from your appearance. . 1 To have an attractive personality, develop the ability to communicate, have confidence in yourself and develop a sense of humor. These qualities give you the ability to inspire and atract others, making others more drawn to you.

2 _Listening is a quality that is often forgotten about in today's society. Instead of responding to a text, opening an email, or thinking about your next meal, pay attention to what the other person is saying. Show them you're listening and interested by commenting on the story or asking questions.

Develop a sense of humor. If you do something silly, laugh at yourself instead of feeling embarrassed. It shows that you're comfortable in your skin.A sense of humor makes someone more engaging and delightful to be with. Remember that there is a time and place for humor. _ 3

Have confidence in how you speak and act._ 4Admit your mistake without being worried about what other people willthink. Doing this shows that you have self-confidence. This helps create an atractive personality because it shows you're comfortable with yourself and that it makes others comfortable around you.

Know the difference between confidence and pride. While confidence is endearing, pride is very unpleasant.. 5 A great way to avoid this is to remind yourself to praise others. This way, it will help you stay grounded.

D閱讀理解

Where do you find beauty? One American photographer is finding beauty in unexpected places. And a new documentary about his work might help change the traditional standards of“who” is beautiful.

Rick Guidoti put aside his career as a fashion photographer to turn his lens to people living with genetic, physical and behavioral differences. He said what changed his perception of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino (患白化病的) girl.

\"As an artist, I don't see beauty just on covers of magazines. I see it everywhere. So it was my initial intention that opened my eyes a little wider,” said Guidotti.

Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not-for-profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated. Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.

The cast and crew recently hosted a screening at Georgetown University in Washington. One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera.“I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but meeting him was my profound moment. I remember that particular day he took my picture and I felt so good like there's somebody who really loves me and sees me for who I am,” said Waithera.

The documentary is the idea of producer Joanna Rudnick. After seeing Guidotti's photos, she decided to tell his story.Rudnick and Guidoti are traveling from city to city to promote On Beauty.“As we travel from community to community, we're taking photographs and we're encouraging individuals with a positive sense of who they are. They're seeing beauty in their reflection but we're also encouraging their families and they in turn are encouraging their communities as well”said Guidotti.

1. What made Guidotti change his understanding of beauty?

A. Meeting an albino girl. B. His job as a fashion photographer.

C. Influence from his co-workers. D. The beauty on the covers of magazines.

2.What can we learn about Positive Exposure?

A. It promotes awareness of beauty. B. It brings advantages to Guidotti. C. It makes documentaries more popular. D.It welcomes differences in the world

3.Whatcanwelearn fromWaithera'swords?

A. Pictures of beauty were popular with people.

B.What she experienced has shaped her life greatly.

C. It was good for people to appreciate the real beauty.

D. Photographs gave people a positive sense of society.

4.What word can bestdescribe Guidotti?

A. Talented. B. Generous. C. Determined. D. Independent.

B

According to scientists, it's a fundamental part of our human nature to look for these qualities—the full lips, clear skin and strong shoulders-in a mate.

Not everyone agrees with this idea, however.“Our hardwiredness (固定思維模式) can be changed by all sorts of expectations—mainly cultural,”says C.Loring Brace, a researcher at the University of Michigan. Look in most Western fashion magazines; the women on the pages are thin. But is this the“perfect”body type for women worldwide? Douglas Yu, a biologist from Great Britain, says no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world.Yu found in one study, for example, that native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded as overweight in Western culture.

Take another example: In every culture, one's hairstyle sends a clear message. In the Huli tribe (部落)of Papua New Guinea, men grow their hair long as a symbol of health and strength. Teenage boys in this culture learn from a young age to style and decorate their hair—a behavior more commonly associated with the opposite gender (性別) in many cultures. It is also the men in this culture who are the objects of beauty. For certain festivals and celebrations, men dress up and paint their faces. The more colorful a man is, the more attractive he is considered.

For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to define exactly what makes one person atractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical traits that are considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always obey a single, uniform standard.A person's cultural background, for example, may influence what he or she finds attractive in others. In the end, beauty really is,as the saying goes,in the eye of the beholder.

5. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

A.Man has a desire to look good.

B.Health and strength are equal to beauty.

C.Man needs several qualities to look attractive.

D. There is a generally accepted opinion about beauty.

6. What does the underlined word “subjective” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Personal. B. Complex. C. Powerful. D. Modern.

7.What is considered attractive in the Huli tribe?

A. Clear skin. B. Straight hair. C. Colorful men. D. Overweight females.

8.What does the text mainly tell us?

A.Beauty is culture-specific. B.Beauty is reflected in lifestyles. C.Beauty has uniform standards. D. Loving beauty is part of human n:
