China is one of the largest producers and consumers of watermelon in the word. And Wu Mingzhu is the unsung hero who has helped make this possible.
“It's no exaggeration to say that about 80 percent of more than 2,000 of China's new seed types of watermelons and sweet melons at people's dining tables every day are the result of great efforts made by Wu and her team,\" said a colleague(同事) of Wu's.
Wu Mingzhu was born in 193O into a scholarly family in Wuhan City. After her graduation in 1953,she was assigned to work in Beijing. But Wu had already set her eyes on her long-awaited goal.“What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables.I wanted to work in the fields not in an office,\" said Wu.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanshan County, Turpan Basin in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where working conditions were quite hard. She found that the Hami melon, which was once common in the area, was in danger of becoming extinct if not properly cultivated (種植). Wu spent years visiting over 3OO production teams, picking out 44 melon varieties. She overcame a variety of difficulties to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way, winning over the local farmers accustomed (習慣的) to folk cultivation methods. Then the promotion area covered most of Xinjiang's main commodity areas, and a group of melonrich villages appeared.

For the past several years,Paula Smith,a historian of science, has devoted herself to recreating long-forgotten techniques. While doing research for her new book, she came across a l6th-century French manuscript consisting of nearly 1,ooo sets of instructions, covering subjects from tool making to finding the best sand.
The author's intention remains as mysterious as his name; he may have been simply taking notes for his own records. But Smith was struck mainly by the fact that she didn't truly grasp any of the skills the author described.
Though Smith did get her hands on the best sand, doing things the old-fashioned way isn't just about playing around with French mud. Reconstructing the work of the craftsmen who lived centuries ago can reveal how they viewed the world, what objects filled their homes, and what went on in the workshops that produced them. It can even help solve present-day problems: In 2015, scientists discovered that a lOth-century English medicine for eye problems could kill a drugresistant virus.
The work has also brought insights for museums, Smith says. One must know how an object was made in order to preserve it. What's more, reconstructions might be the only way to know what treasures looked like before time wore them down. Scholars have seen this idea in practice with ancient Greek and Roman statues. These sculptures were painted a rainbow of striking colors. We can't appreciate these kinds of details without seing works of art as they originally appeared.
Smith has put the manuscript's ideas into practice. Her final goal is to link the worlds of art and science back together. She believes that bringing the old recipes to life can help develop a kind of learning that highlights experimentation, teamwork, and problem solving.
If we can rediscover the values of hands-on experience and craftwork, Smith says, we can marry the best of our modern insights with the handiness of our ancestors.
5.How did Smith feel after reading the French manuscript?
A. Confused. B. Frightened. C. Discouraged. D. Shocked.
6.Why is the reconstruction work done according to Smith?
A. To restore old workshops. B. To takea look into the craftsmen's life.
C. To improve visual effects. D. To inspire the philosophers.
7. Why are museums mentioned in the text?
A.To reveal the beauty of ancient objects. B.To present the findings of old science.
C. To highlight the importance of antiques. D. To emphasize the values of hand skills.
8.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Craftsmen Set the Trends forArtists B.Craftsmanship Leadsto NewTheories C. Craftsmanship Makes Better Scientists D. Craftsmen Reshape the Future of Science
