As a photographer, through my camera lens, I have appreciated many famous sites in the world. Sometimes, some sites, though very beautiful, leave nothing in my memories. Some, however, deeply moved my heart and etched eternal memories in my mind. Ha Long Bay in the northern part of the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam, which was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is definitely the latter.
Ha Long Bay is not far from Dongxing, a city in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, which borders upon Vietnam. Crossing the China-Vietnam border from Dongxing, we entered Mong Cai in Vietnam. Then, taking a ferryboat at Mong Cai, it took about two hours to get to Ha Long Bay.
Ha Long Bay is located within the marine territory of Guang Ninh Province and Ha Long City. Covering an area of 1,553 square kilometers, it is comprised of 1,969 islands, many of which are characterized by unusual limestone formations. In Chinese, Ha Long means “descending dragon.” In 1994, during the 18th session held by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, Ha Long Bay was designated as a World Heritage Site by a unanimous vote of the committee members. Before the voting, an expert commented: “The unusual limestone formations on the surface of Ha Long Bay are unique wonders of nature, and it also has many kinds of special archaeological features. Therefore, it is worthy of being listed among the world natural heritage sites to be protected.”
At the port, getting from the pleasure boat and getting onto a elegantly-shaped sailing boat, which crosses through the islands of a great variety of shapes and postures, you can feel as if coming to a fairyland. Looking far from my camera lens, I could see endless islands stretching a long distance, which form a wonderful natural picture.
