Tangwu is a small town in Changle County of Shandong Province. Commencing from manufacturing traditional musical instruments to manufacturing electric guitars, so far, Tangwu has 28 enterprises involved in musical instruments manufacturing with nearly 10,000 people in employment and turning out more than 200,000 musical instruments, such as electric guitars, electric basses, and wooden guitars, while turning over profits and taxes of more than 10 million every year.
The Changle County Musical Instrument Factory, established in 1971, used to be involved in manufacturing violins. However, with the development of a marketing economy, its marketing share declined day by day, until finally it was approaching bankruptcy. But then, in July 1993, at a trading fair held in Qingdao, Li Peichen, then director of the CCMI factory, learned that some Korean musical instrument companies had the inclination to invest in China to manufacture musical instruments.
Through the aid of a bilingual interpreter, Li got in touch with some South Korean investors; and, after careful research and investigation, on December 8, 1993, the Sino-Korean joint venture Shandong Muse Musical Instrument Co., Ltd., was successfully established. By February 1994, the first 400 electric guitars and basses were manufactured. The high quality and flawless tones of these instruments found them a ready market, and many were exported to more than 10 countries, such as the United States, England, France, and Russia.
In order to expand the scale of production, the town government of Tangwu issued a series of preferential policies to encourage private enterprises to invest in the manufacturing of musical instruments. It was with this background that the Weifang Huihao Musical Instrument Co., Ltd., was established. In September 2000, at the International Light and Loudspeakers Fair held in Beijing, the musical instruments manufactured by this company won favors from many specialists of musical instruments for their high quality, and some traders signed contracts to purchase the instruments on the spot, which greatly promoted the reputation of the company.
Through increasing the number of enterprises involved in musical instrument manufacturing and increasing the output of musical instruments, and on the solid basis of ensuring the quality of their products, Tangwu has started to develop new varieties of musical instruments, to upgrade the levels of all locally produced instruments, and to strengthen their marketing position. For this purpose, the Musical Instruments Association was established to organize managers, engineers and technicians from every enterprise to specialize in creating new products.
To encourage the enthusiasm of employees at every level to engage in creating new products, stock shares shall be given to those who are instrumental in creative innovation. Li Menghua, an employee of Huihao Musical Instrument Co., Ltd., has invented a dual-head electric guitar, which has been so welcomed by customers in the market that production cannot yet meet current demands. As a reward for his creative talents, the company has rewarded his technology with shares, which also encourages other employees to engage in similar aspirations. So far, in the musical instrument enterprises of Tangwu, more than 100 employees have earned annual salaries of more than 20,000 yuan. Every year, more new varieties of musical instruments are being developed, thus increasing turnover to more than 2,000,000 yuan.
