A Private Music Library on the West Lake
By Su Weiqian
As if in response to the Han Meilin Art Gallery recently set up on the West Lake, there has appeared a private music library on the West Lake of late. This house serves as a repository designed to offer music literature and information. Music equipment aficionados can see the trendiest music gadgets and test them there. The house also serves as a venue for album sales, chamber music performances, and coffee sipping. Music buffs can come here to enjoy all kinds of music with latest equipment.
Zhang Ming, an associate professor of Music Department at the Zhejiang Arts Vocational College, is the founder. Trained as a violinist for 12 years and working as a music teacher for more than 20 years, Zhang felt that the western music needed more promotion in the city. He thought the age-old city lagged way behind in music education and appreciation in comparison with its picturesque West Lake and the youthful booming forces making Hangzhou take off as one of the best human habitats and best business centers in the country. In order to push for change, Zhang decided to make his contributions.
In August 2002, Zhang Ming invested more than 600,000 into a music library in his name on the fourth floor of a downtown office tower. He put all he had into the library, including over 3,000 compact discs and advanced music equipment.
The small library was the country’s number one library in terms of hi-fi systems and record numbers. It is said that even the National Library and the Library at the Central Academy of Music do not have the music systems Zhang’s library has. At every weekend, Zhang hosted small-scaled chamber music concerts.
But the library lost money over the course of two years. Out of absolute necessity, she pilgrim to music?wrote to the government for help. The government responded quick. Two high-ranking government officials visited the library. Government offices in charge held a meeting at the library to coordinate for a solution. The Landscape and Garden Bureau offered five sites. The audiences donated.
On July 8th 2005, Zhang Ming Music Library reopened on the West Lake. The excellent location on the lakeside attracts attention. Its popularity has been growing fast. Some people regard the music house as a new name card of the city.
For Zhang Ming, the new library keeps his dream alive. To him music is what religious faith is to believers. Zhang counts himself as lucky because he is in a good city which loves music and offers good policies to people like him to keep music alive and popular in the city. Over the three years since the library made its first melody to local residents, he has held over 200 lectures to more than 20,000 residents at the library and another 200 lectures for colleges and government offices. More than 400,000 students and government workers attended his music promotion lectures. His immediate objective is to expose one million people to his music and lectures.
