In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations, the Exhibition of Chinese and Japanese Calligraphy, Paintings and Disabled Artists’ Works, jointly sponsored by the CPAFFC, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF), the Japan Art Unidentified, the Japanese Association for Disabled Artists (JADA) and Takarazuka University of Art and Design and presented by the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development, was held at the China Millennium Monument from July 26 to 30, 2007. A 106-member delegation led by Shozo Shimamoto, Japanese contemporary artist and president of the JADA, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition and visited the Beijing Haidian Peizhi School and 798 Art Space. At the exhibition 400 pieces of works were displayed, showing the latest creations by Chinese and Japanese calligraphers, painters and disabled artists. The exhibition offered a new opportunity for cultural and art exchanges and cooperation between China and Japan and a platform for exchanges between disabled artists of the two countries.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition with the theme of “Harmony, Peace, Justice and Fraternity” was held on the morning of July 26. Ismail Amat, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Li Xiaolin and Feng Zuoku, CPAFFC vice presidents, Sun Xiande, vice president of the CDPF, and Hisashi Michigami, minister of the Japanese Embassy in China, cut the ribbon. CPAFFC Vice President Li Xiaolin said in her speech, China and Japan are two countries separated by only a strip of water. The exchanges in calligraphy and paintings between the two countries go back to ancient times. The calligraphy and paintings of the two countries with similar romantic charm and artistic conception demonstrate the glamour of the oriental culture. She said, the works of the Chinese and Japanese disabled artists give us a thrill at beauty; they are soul purifying and sublimating, inspiring us to yearn for and pursue peace, harmony, justice and fraternity and to work for lasting friendship between our two countries.
At the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman Ismail Amat awarded the “Prize of Contribution to Peace and Development” to the entrepreneurs and individuals who had given great support to the exhibition. CPAFFC Vice President Feng Zuoku presented the donation certificates to the donors. After the opening ceremony, Japanese contemporary artist Shozo Shimamoto together with the artists of the Art Unidentified drew with the unique splashed-ink technique the five rings of the Olympic Games to wish the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games success.
A stream of visitors viewed the exhibition. They highly admired the superb composition and exquisite technique of the different-styled Chinese and Japanese art works, particularly the disabled artists’ works, unsophisticated yet bubbling with enthusiasm, that embodied their real life experience and yearning for a bright future.
