If you have to miss one meal a day, which meal will cause the fewest health problems? If they have to make a decision of that type, most people will choose to skip breakfast.

However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say,we will have the energy and nutrients(營養) we need to begin our working day with vigor(精力) and hopefully with good humour.

One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants( 參與者) included males and females who ranged(范圍在 ) in age from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip breakfast completely. Special tests, including blood tests and endurance(耐力) tests, were set up to analyze (分析) how well the participants' bodies functioned(活動) when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.

The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently( 有效地 ) and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person' s work involves ( 與相關 ) mental activity. The study showed that if school children eat fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and be able to concentrate( 集中 ) on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast diet is inadequate.

The study also showed that, contrary to ( 與......相反) what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce other meals.

B. a good breakfast helps students to concentrate

In a new measure to ensure that an increasing number of Chinese people can speak good English, all universities and colleges across China will have to use English as a teaching language for professional subjects starting this year.

In a circular issued last month, the Higher Education Department under the Ministry of Education (MOE) said universities must launch bilingual( 雙語的 ) courses from this year. In three years' time, five to ten per cent of universities total courses must be taught in a bilingual manner.

To help accomplish( 實現) this, more original editions of English specialized textbooks will be imported and published in China in the coming years.

\"Higher education institutions across the country must come up with implementation plans as soon as possible,\" said Zhang Yaoxue, director of the Higher Education Department, MOE, \"As China' s entry into the WTO is around the corner, we need more bilingual professionals.\"

One major problem blocking the development of bilingual education is the lack of qualified bilingual teachers. Many science teachers cannot speak good English, and English teachers may not be able to give science lessons.

To solve this problem, the MOE will send more Chinese teachers overseas to receive training. Fifty teachers will be sent abroad at the end of this year.

To boost(推動)the trend of bilingual education, Tsinghua University Press imported and published 43 English books on September 25.

The books cover six subjects Management, Economics, Finance ,.Accounting, Marketing and MBA. They can be used in under-graduate, postgraduate and MBA courses.

All the books boast(擁有)the latest information in their specialized fields and most are used as textbooks by world famous universities, including Cambridge and Harvard.

This is not the first time Tsinghna University Press has published original editions of books in specialized fields. In 1997, it published the first ever original English books on Economics and Management in China. Then other publishing houses, such as Renmin University of China Press and Machinery Industry Press, also began to import books from English-speaking countries.

Since 2000, Tsinghua has been using original English textbooks in its specialized core courses, such as Economics and Information Technology. In some courses, English is the only classroom language:teachers present classes in English and students discuss cases in English.

Such classes are proving very popular among students. In the MBA programme, among the total of 120 new students,90 chose such English courses. After the lessons had begun, some students in the Chinese class wanted to change to the English class.

\"Part of the reason for the popularity of these courses is that they can promote(促進)students' competitiveness(競爭力)future working environments,in which English plays an important role. English jargon must be learned through English,\" said Qian Xiaojun, director of the MBA programme in the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University.

Increased population increases the need for natural resources and also increases waste products.Making a new useful product out of a waste product decreases (減少 ) our need for natural resources. Recycling means using something over again after it has been used once.

Have you ever seen a piece of recycled paper? About one third of all the paper products made each year are made from waste paper. For example, recycled paper is usually used to make paper sacks. Recycling paper, such as newspapers, reduces the number of trees that must be cut each year to make new paper.

Each person wastes a lot of solid waste. In the United States, the average is eight kilograms of waste per person each day. Most of the waste is garbage and rubbish. Finding places to dispose(處理) of solid wastes is a major problem.

In many cities solid wastes are collected and the rubbish is burned in incinerator plants( 焚化場 ). Air pollution control devices are used to prevent pollution. Heat produced in the burning may be used to generate electricity. Waste that is not burned is taken to a dump. One kind of dump for the disposal of solid wastes is a sanitary landfill(廢渣處理池) This method involoves(包含) burying the wastes and bulldozing(平整) the soil over them. Parks, baseball fields, airports, and other developments may be built on completely filled landfills.

Recycling solid wastes decreases our need for methods of disposal. The metal in broken cars can be recycled and made into new steel. Worn-out rubber tires can be turned into new ones and used again. Plastics and other rubber products can be recycled. Metal cans and glass bottles can also be recycled. Increased recycling can help meet the increased demand for natural resources.

By recycling resources, people imitate( 模仿) nature. Elements important to life are naturally recycled. Nothing lasts forever. Wood decays( 腐爛 ) ,iron rusts(生銹), and concrete(混凝土) is worn away by wind and rain. All natural resources used by people eventually( 最終 ) go back into the air, water, and earth.

1. What is main cause of the increased waste, according to the passage?

A. Expansion of cities.B. Development of the paper-making industry.

C. Increased population. D. Lack of recycling methods.

2. According to the passage, recycling paper is mlportant because

A. better paper sacks can be made out of waste paper

B. the prices of new paper are very high

C. trees are no longer available in the developed countries

D. more trees on earth can be saved

3. A big problem of solid waste disposal is that ________.

A. solid wastes are poisonous

B. it is difficult to find places to dispose of solid wastes

C. the disposal process is too backward

D. we don't have enough manpower to dispose of solid wastes

4. Which of the following can NOT be called recycling?

A. Making new paper from used paper.

B. Using worn-out rubber tires to make new ones.

C. Burying metal cans and glass bottles.

D. Producing new steel from metal in broken cars.

5. What is the writer' s attitude towards recycling?

A. The writer thinks that recycling is necessary and important.

B. The writer thinks it is no use recycling.

C. The writer doubts whether recycling is useful to people.

D. The writer thinks that it is a waste of time and money recycling.
