Within the business circles, Chu Jiwang is known as a tycoon of hydraulic-truck business. Beyond the circles, he is best known as a writer.
Chu is so famous as an entrepreneur that a 21-episode television series, based on Chu as a prototype, depicted an ex-serviceman and his entrepreneurial achievement. It was screened on CCTV in May, 2008.Another CCTV channel has screened a 25-minute documentary that highlighted his endeavors after his retirement from the military services.
A brief look at Chu’s business career leads to wonders.In 1985 Chu resigned from his job as the director of passenger-transportation center in Ninghai County and started his plastics business. The first few years were tough, but he still managed to find time for reading and writing extensively. It was not until he chose hydraulic trucks as his product in 1990 that his business boomed. Since then his company has been an international leader in this business. Instead on resting on laurels, he is anxious to innovate, believing that good ideas, high-tech products and fast response to market changes and needs are most important factors in surviving and thriving on the international market. He has been awarded many medals and met with top state leaders.
Unlike most business peers, Chu Jiwang is a good writer. For the past 20 plus years in business, he has published eight books in addition to numerous essays published in newspapers and magazines.
“Working with Foreign Business People” is probably his most popular book. It was serialized in more than 10 newspapers such as Zhejiang Daily and International Business News starting from January, 1998. His “Winds of Business”, published in 2005 by the Press of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, has been serialized in 151 episodes in International Business News and Business Weekly. Readers have responded warmly to Chu’s serialized writings. Some businesses have even recommended the books to their employees.
It is no coincidence that Chu Jiwang has become a writer. He wrote well in senior high school and his compositions were highly appreciated by his poet teacher. While working in the army, he worked as a correspondent for army newspapers and after he came back from the army and worked as a teacher, a factory worker and the party chief of a factory, he still contributed to local newspapers. Somme of his stories were newspaper frontlines.
Unlike other business people, Chu has never tried to unwind himself in pleasure joints such as night clubs. His evenings are devoted to reading and writing. Visiting foreign countries gives him much needed time to read and write. Nowadays whenever he joins a delegation to visit foreign countries, he is usually assigned to a single room so that he can enjoy reading and writing alone. One day Chu flew to London to attend an international fair there. During the 11-hour 8,856-km flight, he kept writing while other passengers read, chatted or dozed.
Chu Jiwang’s reputation as a writer and his profound knowledge makes his business easier. When he was in Chicago attending an international exposition, some business people there read his business cards and realized Chu was the author of the books they had read. With this understanding, contracts became easy. On another occasion, a German businessman came to visit Chu’s company. The bargain was tough. Chu did not lower prices to compete against cheaper products from competition. While showing the foreign businessman around, he talked about German celebrities such as Beethoven, Goethe, Chiller and Marx while the client talked about Confucius and the China’s 5,000-year civilization. The client realized that the prices were okay because Chu’s products were high-tech and better than competition. The two agreed on terms and a contract was clinched. In May, 2008, Chu Jiwang also bagged a few big contracts at an international hardware fair in Las Vegas, America.#8194;
