Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family in Italy. She was born on May 12th, 1820.When she was young, she took music and drawing lessons, and read many books. She also liked travelling a lot with her parents.

As a child, she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them.

At last she decided to be a nurse. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women.

During the Crimean War（克里米亞戰(zhàn)爭）（1854~1856） she went with a group of 38 nurses to the front hospital. Florence used her own money and some from her friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and foods for the soldiers. Her only payment was the smiles of the wounded（受傷的） soldiers. But they were enough for this kind woman.

Florence died at the age of ninety. She tried to serve others through her work as a nurse all her life. Her contribution（貢獻 ） to medicine makes people realize nurses are important and necessary.
