On April 20, a ceremony was held at the Friendship Museum of the CPAFFC for the signing of an agreement between the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development (CFFPD) and the Australian International School of Beijing (AISB) Group on the establishment of China’s International University Scholarship Fund and the latter’s donation to the fund. Present at the ceremony were Li Xiaolin, honorary chairperson of the CFFPD; Hu Jianhuai, secretary general of the CFFPD; James Tan, chief representative of Western Australia Curriculum Council in Greater China Region and board member of AISB Group; Lydia Liu, principal of the National Institute of Technology.
At the signing ceremony, Li Xiaolin and James Tan signed a Five-Year Cooperation Agreement on behalf of the CPPFD and the AISB Group respectively. The AISB Group will raise 15 million RMB yuan to set up China’s International University Scholarship Fund under the CPPFD. The fund is ear-marked for scholarships and grants to students studying at schools in the CBD International Education Park, who are good both in study and behavior and whose families have financial difficulties. The fund will help these students complete their studies at home and abroad for the acquisition of more qualified personnel for China and promote the development of education of youth in the country.
In her address, Li Xiaolin said that she has high respect for Mr. James Tan for his devotion to China’s education for years. As early as in 1997, James Tan invested in creating the CBD International Education Park in Beijing, an act that won him fine reputation both in China and abroad. The park has hitherto sent more than 3,000 students abroad for further study, a significant contribution to China’s education. In addition to providing an incentive and assistance to good students at home and abroad by reducing their financial burdens, the fund also encourages the students to study hard and display enterprising spirit. She also expressed the hope that more enterprises and individuals will join in the cause and pool their efforts to make contribution to education. She emphasized the establishment of the fund falls in line with the mission of the CPPFD. The two parties will strictly adhere to the basic principles of “openness, transparency, respect for donor’s wishes, effective use of donations”; strictly observe rules stipulated in the Regulation on the Administration of Foundations by the State Council and Law of the People’s Republic of China on Donations for Public Welfare and other relevant laws and regulations, as well as stipulations in the Agreement signed between us; manage well and make good use of the funds; acquire more qualified personnel and make better contribution to the development of education of youth in China.
James Tan delivered an ebullient address on behalf of the AISB Group. He said that he had been devoting his efforts to education in the past years, because he wanted to cultivate more qualified personnel, and assist more young people to go abroad so as to increase their knowledge and broaden their vision. As a Chinese Australian, he felt gratifying to have done something beneficial in the field of education. He would continue his efforts to raise funds both at home and abroad so that more students could get scholarships and grants, which would help them complete their studies at home and abroad so as to make greater contribution to China’s modernization.
Li Xiaolin accepted from James Tan a check of 3 million RMB yuan as donation for 2009.
