Nestled in the Huliu River Valley of Hebei Province,Yuxian lies only about 240 kilometers from Beijing alongan important passage between North China Plain andZhangbei Plateau. Historically, due to its strategic loca-tion, the county was the site of countless battles betweennomadic tribes from the North and feudal regimes inCentral China. Since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), sev-eral fortresses erected there served their builders' defenseneeds. One of them, Shangsuzhuang Village, is amongstthe county's best-preserved.
