她在海峽兩岸飛翔

周荃祖籍在浙江省江山市吳村鄉水晶山底村。1949年上半年，周荃的父親周文欽當時還是個20多歲的小伙子，從福建廈門坐船渡過臺灣海峽，到臺北探望二姐。沒想到一去就回不來了，只好在二姐家暫住下來。后來他在臺南的成功大學找了一份差事，工作勤奮、認真負責，幾年后，便從一名普通的職員提升為成功大學附工事務主任。后來他便與家在臺南的一位姑娘結了婚，于1956年生下了小周荃。轉眼間，周荃出落成一位亭亭玉立的美女。她從臺灣文化大學新聞系畢業后，先到臺灣“華視”公司工作，后在正聲廣播公司當記者，1979年又以優異的成績考入了臺灣“中視”公司新聞部，從此與電視新聞采播結緣。周荃在“中視”當記者時，第一次出去采訪就做了一件挺俠義的事。那天下午，她路過臺北獅子林廣場時，看到一些在街頭靠給人畫像謀生的“戶外畫家”，突然拎起畫夾和小椅子，拼命地往小巷里跑，連丟在地上的畫筆也不要了。周荃正大惑不解時，只見廣場對面走過來幾位巡警。周荃一打聽，方知這些巡警常以“戶外畫家”在街頭給人畫像影響市容為由，抓住他們輕則罰款，沒收畫具，重則拘留。難怪“戶外畫家”見到巡警猶如“老鼠見到貓”一樣害怕。周荃對此憤憤不平，這不是不讓人謀生嗎?!于是，她決意站出來為“戶外畫家”討個公道。她扛著沉重的攝像機在小巷里找到數十名“戶外畫家”，還有許多市民和官員及巡警，歷時一年多時間，先后在“中視新聞節目”中，連續做了30多次專題報道，引起了社會各界的關注，最后那些“戶外畫家”可以名正言順地在街頭為人畫像了。

不久，在一個月黑風高的夜晚，她又和同事去拍攝一些偷宰毛豬和搞水注肉的屠宰場的現場批評報道。他們一下電視采訪車，便見一群臉上充滿敵意、身上穿著血衣、手里握著明晃晃殺豬刀的無證屠工圍了過來，并發出“殺、殺、殺”的威脅聲。可周荃卻臉無懼色，大膽地迎了上去。在無證屠工們的威脅、叫罵和拉扯中，完成了極為艱難的采訪任務。回來上車時，周荃發現電視采訪車的輪胎已被無證屠工用殺豬刀割破了。

周荃對不正之風剛正不阿，而面對基層的民眾，卻極富有同情心。有一天，周荃接到一封觀眾來信，說是有位叫曉涵的少女遭遇不幸。她立即跑到警察局等有關部門查詢，整整查了兩天兩夜，終于救出被逼上絕境的曉涵，并像大姐姐一樣關懷曉涵的生活。

周荃的俠骨柔情，贏得了臺灣新聞界同行的稱道，有些觀眾還給了她一個“周青天”的雅號。

追求真相的董事長

周荃在“中視”當了9年的記者、主持人、女主播后，曾出來從政9年。1994年2月15日，她創辦了臺灣第一家有線電視臺——真相電視臺。這是全球華人社會第一家有線電視新聞網，范圍覆蓋亞、美、歐地區，收視人口達數千萬。就這樣，她成了臺灣有線電視的“媽祖婆”。

為了辦好真相電視臺，周荃就去請臺灣著名作家李敖先生出來做節目。李敖愉快地接受了邀請，在真相電視臺開了一檔《李熬笑傲江湖》的節目。《李敖笑傲江湖》的節目開播不久，便在海內外華人中引起轟動，收視率迅速攀升。他每天晚上10點開始講，一般講半個小時，四五年時間講了1000集，有許多觀眾不看他的節目就睡不著覺。李敖很感激這位把他牽上熒屏的“美女”，多次在公開場合這樣說：“對于周荃，我懷有一種特殊的情感，與其說是伯樂知遇，管鮑之情，倒不如說我欣賞她的執著、勇氣與眼光，她真了不起。因為有周荃，才有今日電視上的李敖。”2000年7月，周荃還促成李敖回大陸訪問探親，在海內外引起良好反響。

周荃擔任真相電視臺董事長后，對報道方向進行了重大調整，把真相電視臺從一個綜合臺轉向“兩岸財經臺”，大幅度增加了對祖國大陸的報道內容，全力搭建一座海峽兩岸信息溝通的橋梁。除了保留一些有影響的主打節目外，周荃新開了由臺灣著名藝人凌峰主持的《臺灣心大陸情》節目，還有《聚焦兩岸新聞》《來去大陸》《中國企業英雄榜》《上海AB股到臺灣》等一系列節目，同時還播出北京電視臺拍攝的《流年》《千里共嬋娟》等紀錄片。當周荃獲悉江蘇攝制了一部反映張學良、蔣緯國等170多位主人公的紀錄片《血脈》后，就通過真相電視臺執行副總經理鄭又平教授等人要來樣片。她當即拍板將《血脈》放在傳統節日端午節期間在真相電視臺播出，告訴人們不要忘記自己的祖國和根。《血脈》播出后，在海內外華人中引起強烈反響。

作為真相電視臺的董事長，周荃每天有大量的策劃、審片和行政管理事務要做，可以說忙得日夜連軸轉。但對于一些重大采訪活動和重要節目，她總是親自披掛上陣。5年前，在中共十六大開幕期間，她親自帶領一個陣容強大的采訪組前往北京采訪，用全新的視角，攝制了大量的深度報道，向臺灣人民全面介紹了中共十六大的空前盛況。同時，她自己也在采訪會議的同時，成了一個新聞人物，在許多媒體上頻頻亮相。此外，她自己還在真相電視臺主持了一檔《周荃泡咖啡》節目，評論兩岸的一些事情，受到了觀眾的歡迎。

在海峽兩岸飛翔

2003年，周荃在一次乘飛機時，在一本航空雜志上看到刊登在上面的一則《清華大學經濟管理學院EMBA招收新生信息》，她就報名參加了學習。雖然開學后的第一個月就遇上了“鬧非典”，聽課也很辛苦，但她還是堅持認真學習。她說：“從我第一次踏上大陸土地的那一刻，不僅有回家的感覺，而且眼界大開。到清華大學后，我更看到了這里是藏龍臥虎之地，各種人才很多，老師水平很高，我可以一邊‘充電’，一邊結交新的朋友，進一步豐富我的人生。”她還鼓勵在臺灣的一些親人、朋友、同行，有機會一定要到大陸走一走、看一看、學一學，相信一定能滿載而歸的。其實你只要跨過臺灣海峽，就跨上了另一個新的更大的舞臺，這里有世界頂尖的500強大企業和190多個國家的人員往來。在大陸這片創業的熱土上，臺灣同胞不僅可以尋找到新的發展機遇，而且可以與大陸同胞一道，共創中國人的21世紀。

在清華大學讀書期間，周荃還著手籌建清華大學臺灣同學會，并被選為會長。周荃一直在努力搭建海峽兩岸溝通的橋梁，為兩岸同胞的各種交流牽線。2005年3月，她組織臺灣清華大學EMBA企業家同學到北京清華大學參觀學習，并考察了中國網通、聯想集團等著名企業。3個月后，她又組織北京清華大學的老師和EMBA企業家同學，到臺灣清華大學出席“首屆兩岸清華論壇”，這項活動被稱為“兩岸清華破冰之旅”。2006年6月，周荃又組織80名臺灣大學生、研究生到上海復旦大學和上海、蘇州、昆山參觀，使臺灣學生對祖國大陸有了更新的認識。8月初，周荃又率臺灣的高中校長們來到蘇州，出席著名教育家葉圣陶研究會與國家教育部所屬的中國教育學會高中教育專業委員會聯合舉辦的“第二屆兩岸高中校長教育論壇”，就兩岸當前的高中教育開展有益的交流。同時，周荃又擔任了“第三屆中華儒商國際論壇”的副主席，大會專門委托她負責在兩岸經商的臺灣企業家中推選出十佳“儒商”代表人物與企業，于2006年9月底組團去山東曲阜出席“孔子文化節”，并接受大會的頒獎。這一系列的文化經濟交流活動，讓周荃忙得不亦樂乎。但她覺得并不累，而且還挺有成就感。她高興地說：“我的血液里流淌著兩岸的DNA，我愛大陸也愛臺灣，為海峽兩岸做貢獻是我最快樂的事。所以我要為海峽兩岸的父老鄉親泡咖啡。”

Woman Promotes Cross-Strait Relations

It is hard to tell who Zhou Quan is if one only knows the woman once studied an ENBA postgraduate course at Beijing-based Tsinghua University.

Her two other titles reveal more about the adventures of the outstanding Taiwan woman. She was the president of the Taiwan-based Truth Television and the host of Zhou Quan Coffee Break， a talk show featured by the television station. Now she is president of an education foundation in Taiwan.

A reporter

Zhou Quan has her family roots in the mainland. Her father Zhou Wenqin crossed the Taiwan Straits from Xiamen of Fujian Province to the island in the first half of 1949 to visit his second elder sister. The sibling visit was not motivated by any political reason. When the traffic across the straits was cut off， Zhou Wenqin was unable to come back to his hometown Jiangshan in southern Zhejiang Province. After staying with the sister for a while， a friend recommended him to a job at the National Cheng Kung University based in Tainan. He worked hard and got promoted. His marriage with a local girl begot Zhou Quan in 1956.

After working briefly at two media companies， Zhou Quan began in 1979 to work at the Taiwan China Television， thus starting her career as a journalist. She worked there for nine years.

Her nine-year career at the television began with a big bang.

On her way to do her first assignment one day， Zhou passed a downtown square just in time to see many street artists stampeding into nearby small lanes， carrying their equipment. She soon found out why. A few police officers appeared and patrolled the square. Zhou was infuriated by the prohibition. If New York and Tokyo allowed street artists to work in downtown squares， she reasoned， why should the Taipei authorities ban artists from making a living there? So the novice journalist interviewed dozens of street artists， residents and government officials on the subject. The television station made a program on the subject and then followed it up with more than 30 more reports. The coverage grabbed the attention of the general public. In the end， the city authorities called off the ban.

Another night， she and her colleagues were going to do an on-the-spot report at an illegal slaughterhouse. As soon as they stepped off their van， they saw a group of unlicensed butchers come forward， their faces distorted by ferocious hate， their cloths smeared with blood， and flashy butcher’s knives in their hands. Several of Zhou’s male colleagues flinched and stepped back， but Zhou walked up to the butchers. Though the butchers cursed， threatened and even pushed her， Zhou Quan continued her work. When the coverage was done and Zhou and her colleagues were ready to leave， they found the tires of the van had been slashed. A butcher roared viciously that it was only a small lesson and that they would not hesitate to cut off an arm or a leg if the journalists dared to come back. Despite the malicious threat， Zhou Quan wrapped up the report back at the station and it was soon aired. Her colleagues later joked that Zhou Quan’s courage was sharper than the knives.

Zhou was so adamant in exposing social evils that her reports frequently antagonized high-ranking officials of the authorities. She even created an epitaph to outface danger: “I am prepared to go to hell for the cause of justice， for heaven would never admit me if I can’t tell right from wrong.”

President at Pursuit of Truth

Over the nine years at the Taiwan China Television， Zhou Quan worked as a reporter， host and news presenter before engaging herself more actively in politics. After quitting the China TV， she set up Truth Television， the island’s first cable television that successfully broke away from the news blockage imposed by the island authorities. It was the first global Chinese news television with more than 10 million viewers in Asia， America and Europe.

To promote the audience rating， Zhou Quan invited Li Ao， a writer who had explored truth and blasted social evils in newspaper columns， to host a one-man talk show. Many people thought Li Ao would be trouble， but Zhou believed that Li had the courage， morality and wisdom to do the job well. The talk show enabled the scholar to shift his verbal attack on social evils from newspaper columns to television. Li did not just condemn those responsible for bad things. He went out of his way to talk about the good people and their good deeds. The audience rating soared shortly after Li’s 10 pm program went on air. For a period of five years， the bold writer covered various social topics in more than 1，000 shows.

After assuming the presidency of the television， Zhou Quan assigned much more time for reports on the mainland. Programs on travel， business， history and cultural exchanges between the island and the mainland were screened. Truth Television also screened documentaries produced by the mainland artists and journalists. Zhou Quan even headed a team to cover the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. She also hosted her own show to talk about things on both sides of the Straits.

In June， 2003， the controlling stockholder of Truth Television shut down the television operations due to the strong pressure from the Taiwan authorities. It is believed that one of the shutdown reasons was that the programs looked offensive in the eyes of the authorities.

Since the shutdown of the Truth Television， Zhou Quan has made continuous efforts to promote exchanges across the Taiwan Straits.

In 2003， Zhou Quan ran into an advertisement of the EMBA course at the business college of the Beijing-based Tsinghua University on a flight. She enrolled herself into the course. She liked what she saw at the university: talented people and a vast variety of resources. She enriched her life through new friends she made and new things she learned there.

Zhou Quan never hesitates to encourage her friends， relatives， and colleagues in Taiwan to visit the mainland and gain first-hand experiences. She believes that people from Taiwan can find development opportunities on the mainland and work together with the compatriots on the mainland to create a bright future for China in the 21st century.

While studying at Tsinghua University， Zhou Quan set up an association of Tsinghua Taiwan Alumni and she was elected president of the association. In March 2005， she organized EMBA students in Taiwan-based Tsinghua University for a field study tour on the mainland. Three months later， she organized teachers and EMBA students from Beijing-based Tsinghua University to attend the First Forum of Tsinghua Universities across the Straits. In June， 2006， Zhou also organized 80 university students from Taiwan to visit Fudan University in Shanghai. The students also toured neighboring Suzhou and Kunshan. In August of the same year， she organized principals of high schools in Taiwan to visit the mainland.
