Around the world in 21 days
I was to meet Jane at Shanghai’s Peninsula on the Bund. I hadn’t met Jane before and didn’t know what she looked like. But I saw a lady in a well-cut, well-fitted, burgundy suit wearing a badge shaped like a flying jet and I immediately knew it was her. She looked like she was walking straight from a private jet with an important mission well executed. I was right. And indeed the badge is the logo of her company, Private Jet Journeys. She is the founder and CEO of this charter brokerage and exclusive travel and lifestyle provider. No surprise to me that she obtained her private pilot’s license right out of college.
It has been just two weeks since Jane moved to Shanghai, and she has already designed a package for potential clients who want to travel around the world in 20 days.
“Why 20 days? Why not 80?” Jules Verne made such an impression on me since high school.
“It is more like a sampling trip. The clients want to see the world first and then decide where they want to go back to,” replied Jane.
I was in doubt, so I started to go through the itinerary. Jane suggested 10 countries in 6 continents for her clients, from desert to jungles, cities to countryside, the highlights being Africa’s Cradle of Civilization, the Amazon jungle, the volcanoes of Hawaii and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. “This unforgettable journey will include activities to appeal to all ages with extraordinary surprises at every turn,” said Jane. So let’s have a look. You depart from Beijing and fly to Muscat, The Sultanate of Oman, where you enjoy camel rides and 4 wheel-drive races in the desert. You are treated to Bedouin tented fantasia under the stars, VIP tours of “Arabia’s Jewel” and private dinner aboard the Sultan’s Yacht. Nice, I started to get it. You then fly to Rome, for “an exclusive tour of the Coliseum and Rome highlights private viewing and purchasing opportunity of world-class art, a half-day Ferrari driving school” and of course “closed-door shopping on Via Condotti”. The next stop is Livingstone, Zambia. Jane has lined up Victoria Falls, river expedition to where four countries meet: Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia, private safari in search of Africa’s Big Five and traditional Boma dinner with native dancers” for you. Amazing, isn’t it?
With private jets, your jet lag is not supposed to be that bad. So get ready for the rain forest in Brazil. You will take the canoe and meet with chief of the local tribe. You then fly to Baja peninsula for game fishing, swimming with dolphins and golf. If you regret not having enough golf in North America, you can continue with it in Hawaii, with PGA champions this time. You also don’t want to miss USS Missouri, where the Japanese surrendered.
You need to continue to the last stop, Australia for the Great Barrier Reef and farewell dinner on a “private megayacht”.
Private Jet Journeys came to China
25 years ago, Jane and her partners spotted an opportunity in the United States. More and more people had planes. Jane has a family one. Her father used to train pilots for the WWII. But the plane was not as versatile as humans; one type of plane served one purpose nicely but might be useless for another task. In addition, many non-plane-owners wanted to charter a plane occasionally. Jane wanted to be a bridge and Flight Time Corporation was founded. After years of operations, Jane and her team have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise in planes, operators, pilots and crews. They know where to source available planes, what plane suits what purpose, which operator and crew have a better track record, and how to get the documentation done. Even after the arrival of the Internet, clients continue to trust and rely on Flight Time’s expertise and network Jane’s clients include Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Ma Youyou, Tiger Woods and Yaoming when he was with the Rockets. Jane’s team operates behind the scene as a safe pair of hands.
In addition, Jane and her team build up a network of contacts, including hotels, local high-end service providers and the high society. She opens the doors for you, to the British royal family, Hollywood stars, sports champions, politicians and tycoons. “How do you become so well-connected? I asked, perhaps needlessly. “It comes with age,” she answered graciously.
Private Jet Journey’s website has been up and running since January 2012 and Jane has moved to Shanghai formally for only two weeks. But she has already got a lot of inquiries and she seems to have got some insight into the local market. “Every package is exclusive and customized,” said Jane, “Strangely clients sometimes don’t really know what they want. But we talk with them and in China a few key themes have emerged, health and wellness, education and culture, sports and relaxation, business investment and shopping.”
Apart from the 21-day world trip, Jane is developing a few other ideas for her clients —a tour of top 10 golf courses, U.S. boarding school visits and meeting up with Hollywood stars and directors and even luxurious destination weddings.
A Thailand Connection
Apart from travelling between the U.S. and China, Jane often goes to Thailand. She is the Co-Founder of Friends of Thai Daughters, an organization e fighting human trafficking of girls. Jane has been working hard to funnel some of the profits from serving the rich to helping the underprivileged. She said she looks forwarding to expanding her volunteer efforts here in China too.
The China market is hugely promising based on the reception Jane has got so far. She is focusing on outbound for the moment, but there are already candidates trying to partner with her to serve the domestic market. Jane is cautious about it, wanting to take one thing at a time and get to know the market well first. Jane is thrilled with running a start up all over again. “In the U.S., there are experienced people doing a good job at the company, and I don’t have to do much. But here, I get to do everything all over again. It is like having a new baby without the stretch marks,” she added with a big smile.
