經驗于工作到底有多重要?

每一個職場新鮮人或許都曾有這樣的困惑：每家公司都想招熟手，但是沒有新，哪成舊？其實對此也不要太過悲觀，我們來聽聽Louisa是怎么說服Henry的。

Louisa: Hey babe， I’m home!

Henry: Hey， how was work?

Louisa: Same old， same old. You?

Henry: Work? What work?

Louisa: You know what I mean! How goes the job hunt?

Henry: 1)Meh. Not so hot to be honest.

Louisa: Really? Well， I guess it’s only day one. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Henry: I don’t know babe—it really just seems like there’s not much out there for someone like me.

Louisa: What do you mean?

Henry: It seems like people care less and less about education

路易莎：嗨，寶貝，我回來了！

亨利：嗨，工作得怎么樣啊？

路易莎：老樣子。你呢？

亨利：工作？什么工作？

亨利：還行。老實說不太好。

亨利：寶貝，我不知道——只是感覺好像真沒有那么多地方需要我這樣的人。

Louisa: Oh c’mon—you’re not telling me that they’re hiring high school kids or something?

Henry: Haha， okay， no， not that extreme. You still need an education， of course. But it seems like companies are looking at my degree and then saying， “Okay， great. And?”

Louisa: Ah， I see.

Henry: They want letters of reference and 2)firsthand experience. I’ve got nothing like that.

Louisa: But you did some TA work in university. ①That should count for something.

Henry: It’s still not practical stuff.

Henry: Not without any experience.

Louisa: You know what? A lot of places almost consider a lack of experience a good thing.

Henry: Oh come off it. There’s no way.

Louisa: Seriously though! ③You can’t teach an old dog new tricks， so sometimes a fresh mind is just the ticket. Companies want new ideas， fresh innovation， right?

Henry: Of course.

Louisa: Well that’s how you should market yourself. Focus less on what you’ve already done and more on what you can bring to the company in

terms of new ideas.

Henry: But how can I do

that without even getting

tapped for an interview?

Louisa: Put it in your

cover letter! ④It’ll be like

Henry: Haha， maybe not

quite that simple， ⑤but it

can’t hurt to try.

Louisa: I’m telling you，

重學歷，越來越重視經驗了。

路易莎：哦，拜托——別告訴我他們要招的是高中生或者其他什么人吧。

亨利：噢別胡扯了。不可能。

路易莎：我說真的！老狗學不會新把戲，因此有時候（職場）新鮮人倒是獲勝者。企業都想要新奇的點子、創新的改革，對吧？

亨利：當然。

路易莎：好吧，那就是你該如何推銷自己的方法。少強調一些你已經做過的事情，但是要多說說你可以在新創意方面為公司帶來什么。

亨利：但是我連面試機會都沒有，怎么

去推銷自己呢？路易莎：把這些寫進你的簡歷！這樣就可以輕而易舉地得到面試機會啦。

亨利：哈哈，可能不會那么容易吧，不過試試也無妨。

路易莎：我要告訴你，這將會是你（走入職場）的金鑰匙哦。

亨利：好吧，我會做個嘗試。謝謝你，寶貝。

Smart Sentences

① That should count for something. 那應該是有些意義的。

count for something: be important or valuable in consideration for sth.（有價值，有份量）。例如：

When you apply for a new job， grades in school don’t count for something.

一個人在應聘新工作的時候，在校時的成績并無價值。

② There’s got to be a way for you to get your foot in the door. 總有讓你邁出第一步的方法。

get one’s foot in the door: take the first step in working toward a goal（邁出的第一步）。例如：

An internship in an investment bank may get your foot in the door in the banking industry.

在投資銀行的實習機會也許是你在銀行業邁出第一步的機會。

③ You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. 老狗學不會新把戲。

teach an old dog new tricks: make sb. change the way they do sth. when they have been doing it the same way for a long time， usu. used in the negative（使年老、守舊的人接受新事物，通常以否定形式出現）。例如：

Since you can’t teach an old dog new tricks， we should not target our group buying at elderly.

既然老年人不容易接受新事物，我們就不應該將他們作為團購的目標。

④ It’ll be like pushing at an open door. 這樣就可以輕而易舉得到面試機會啦。

push at an open door: achieve sth. easily（輕而易舉地做到某事）。例如：

With his performance record and some help from his old boss， John’s application for the position is like pushing at an open door.

以他之前的表現和老上司的幫忙，約翰想申請這個職位太容易了。

⑤ But it can’t hurt to try. 不過試試也無妨。

it can’t/doesn’t hurt to do sth.: even if the plan is not successful， nothing bad will happen OR it will be helpful（一試無妨；或做某事有好處）。例如：

It won’t hurt to learn some basics about the position you are applying for.

了解一些你應聘職位的基本內容是有好處的。

⑥ I’m gonna give it a shot. 我會做個嘗試。

give it a shot: attempt to do sth.（嘗試做某事），例如：

A lot of teams are fighting for the Easter project， but we’ll give it a shot anyway.

雖然許多小組都在爭那個復活節項目，但無論如何我們組都想爭取一下。

⑦ A good kick in the pants from time to time!時常幫你振作一下精神！

a kick in the pants: a stimulant to produce greater effort， enthusiasm（興奮，振奮精神）。例如：

Adam has been depressed for a whole week since the defeat at speech competition. Let’s give him a kick in the pants and help him to cheer up.

自從輸了演講比賽后，亞當已經消沉了整整一個星期了。我們來幫他振作起來吧。

⑧ I’ll say! 可不是嘛！

I’ll say: indicates you understand the situation and agree with what’s been said（用以表示理解對方的話）。例如：

—I really don’t think Mr. Jones will give up the Russian market; he is too smart to do that.

我真的覺得瓊斯先生不會放棄俄羅斯市場，他這么精明，不會這么做的。

—I’ll say.

可不是嘛。
