小華來到教室，向小濤抱怨：“我本想辦一個小小的聚會，沒想到我姐把該請的、不該請的全請來了！”在這個情景里，如何用英語來表達“該請的、不該請的”呢？看好了——“Every Tom， Dick and Harry”。

這里的“Tom，Dick and Harry”，泛指普通人，但含有蔑視的意思，特指“非常非常一般、毫無半點建樹的普通人”，如：Every Tom， Dick and Harry is qualified to do the job. （這活兒誰都能干！）其實，最早人們是用“Francis（弗朗西斯）”這個人名來代指“無足輕重的小人物”。到了19世紀，由于“Harry”成了極其普遍的“大眾名”，于是人們開始用 “Harry”，外加“Tom”和“Dick”，來指代“受人輕視的普通人”。
