The arrival of wi-fi and cellphones has been a 2)blight for the traditional 3)haunt of the 4)intellectual, the café. In my favorite café in California it’s impossible to find a seat after 10 AM. 5)Impoverished students buy one drink, then nurse it through 8 hours of internet 6)trolling. To cover the costs of these cyber-squatters, cafés charge 7)outrageous 8)premiums for drinks and food. Their 9)denizens, in response, ever longer nurse their 10)solitary lattés.
How do we reclaim the café for the people? Since the main 11)commodity cafés sell is not coffee but time, they should charge for time directly. Payment should be for 12)occupancy by the hour. Customers must 13)clock in and 14)clock out. This will allow cafés to 15)correspondingly reduce the price of coffee and food to 16)modest levels. Strangely, in Russia, not where we expect advanced 17)capitalism, this idea has been 18)implemented.
