本文講述的是一個生活在紐約的富翁，在妻子和有先天殘疾的兒子死后不久也去世。在他的家產拍賣會上，第一件被拍出物品是一副他兒子的畫像，在沒有人愿意購買的情況下由他的一位窮困的仆人花了5美元買下，意外得到了他的所有財產。通過這個故事說明一個道理：我們一直都在追尋財富，殊不知對他人的點滴關心才是這個世界上真正的財富。

1. C 邏輯推斷。由上文提到Ronald非常富有，擁有財產幾千萬美元，因此可以推斷他擁有很多的房產、土地、古董等等，用owned。

2. D 邏輯推斷。由Although引導的讓步狀語從句，表轉折，盡管他外在（on the outside）什么都有，但是內心（on the inside） 還是不開心（unhappy）。

3. A 背景常識。由上文可知Ronald非常富有但卻無子嗣，由常識可知但凡富豪無子，都非常希望能夠有一個兒子來繼承自己的家業（family legacy），carry on有“傳承，繼續下去“的意思，非常符合語境。

4. D 詞語同現。后面講到他妻子生下了（give birth to）一個小男孩，在生之前肯定是要懷孕的（pregnant）， pregnant 與 give birth to 是詞語同現。

5. B 常識推斷。but連接表示前后轉折，就是說盡管小孩子有很嚴重的殘疾，但是父親并不嫌棄，還是全身心地愛他。

6. B 邏輯推斷。Ronald的妻子死后，Ronald很愛他兒子，所以與兒子更加親近了，而不是疏遠。與人親近用形容詞close。near表示方位上的距離近。

7. C 邏輯推斷或背景常識。由動詞拍賣（auction）推斷出參加的人是競拍者。參加拍賣會的人都被稱為“競拍者”（bidder），屬于常識知識。

8. A 邏輯推斷。前面說到沒有一個人出價（no one bid）， 到最后由一個窮仆人以5美金拍下，用Finally。

9. B 習慣搭配。拍賣會中具體出價多少用offer。

10. B 詞語復現。下文中說到那些貪婪的競拍者都walked away in shock， astonishment與shock屬近義復現。
