英語中表示原因的方法較多，下面將一些常用的表達法作以整理列舉，供學生學習參考。

一、出現表示原因的關聯詞

常見的有because， since， as， for，其中because語氣最強，常用來回答why的提問，表示一種直接原因，而不是推斷，如要強調時可將because引導的原因狀語從句提前。

例1. I am very strict with my students， because I want them to become good citizen.

我對我的學生要求很嚴，因為我想讓他們成為好公民。

例2. Because he is ill， he is absent today.

因為他生病了，所以他今天缺席。

since， as用法相似，語氣較because弱，所說的是一種附帶性原因，as引導的從句常常置于主句前面，since表示的原因常是稍加分析后得出的結論。

例3. As he was not well， I decided to go without him.

因為他身體不舒服，我決定獨自去了。

例4. He didnt come， since he was busy.

他因為忙，所以就沒有來。

例5. Since everyone is here， lets have the meeting.

既然大家都到了，咱們就開會。

例6. As he studies hard， he has made great progress.

由于他學習努力，所以進步很大。

等立連詞for引導的并列分句也可表示原因，兩個并列分句一個表示原因，另一個表示結果，類似since， as， 語氣也不強，只是對前面的事實進行說明解釋。

例7. Gui lin is famous for its scenery.

桂林以風景優美而著名。

例8. Itll rain， for the swallow flies very low.

天要下雨了，因為燕子飛得很低。

二、不出現關聯詞（組），用獨立分句表示原因

例9. It has been raining these days， the meeting will put off.

這些天一直在下雨，會議將延期舉行。

例10. Father wont see a film， he is too tired.

爸爸不去看電影了，他太累啦。

三、動詞不定式及其短語表示直接原因

例11. Im very glad to see you.

見到你我非常高興。（句中不定式to see you是glad的直接原因）

例12. Im very sorry to trouble you.

真對不起，打擾你了。（句中不定式短語to trouble you是sorry的直接原因）

四、介詞或其短語+Ving形式表示原因

例13. Wang Guangfu was criticized for being late.

王光富因遲到而受批評。

有時可用表示原因的短語接名詞表示原因，這樣的詞組有because of， for this reason， on account of， thanks to， due to， owing to， on the score of 等。

例14. He became very old， because of hard work.

艱辛的勞動使他特別蒼老。（注：because 連句， because of 連詞不連句）

五、在某些帶有感情色彩的形容詞和過去分詞后可用連詞that 來引導表示原因的狀語從句

that 在口語中常常省略，這樣的詞有：sorry， afraid， thankful， pleased， pround， disappointed， glad， surprised， ashamed， satisfied等。

例15. His father is disappointed （that）he has not passed the exam.

這次他沒考過關，他爸爸很失望。

例16. I am surprised （that） he told a lie.

他撒了謊，我感到驚奇。

例17. You should be thankful （that）you have caught the train.

你應該為你趕上火車而感到慶幸。

六、原因狀語從句也可用分詞結構表示

一般情況下，分詞結構的邏輯主語應跟主句的主語保持一致。

例18. Bing poor， he can not afford to purchase a computer.

由于貧窮，他連電腦都買不起。

例19.There being no buses， wu had to go home on foot.

既然沒有公交車，那我們就只好步行回家了。

另外還有一些表示因果關系的結構，如by reason of， as a result of， in result， be the cause of， in consideration of， 這些就不再一一列舉了。
