School was out and summer officially began. Many teens traded their books for bathing suits and headed to the beach. I spent my summer working.

Being a camp adviser is tiring but rewarding. In past summers, I watched the kids come and go week after week, received my paychecks, and said good-bye. That is the normal routine. But this year, one child stood out. His name was Matthew, a 10-year-old who lived in darkness. Matthew was blind.

I had been both expecting and dreading (懼怕) the first day of the camp. Who wanted to work anyway? I greeted the kids, and told them some rules. At first, I couldn’t tell which one was Matthew. Later I introduced myself.

“Hi, I’m Greg. What’s your name?” I asked.

“Matthew Howell, but not like a dog howls (嚎叫)!” he joked.

The summer progressed, and Matthew and I felt like we’d known each other forever. He often told me that he wished we were brothers. We talked about his favorite sports, music, and activities. He had a great imagination, and he would sing for the other kids while they cheered him on.

I sat on the bench on the last day of the camp and my college life would soon come up. A 10-year-old gave me advice when I expressed my worries. “Don’t give up. You’ve got nothing to stop you,” he laughed.

Then it hit me. It took me eight weeks to realize what I did at that moment. Imagine the view of a city skyline with the sun beaming through, or a field of flowers blooming in spring. Matthew was robbed of all these, but he could still make 12 kids at camp laugh. I learned to stop holding myself back and capture my goals, no matter how far-fetched they might seem. We helped each other a lot that summer. A summer I will never forget—the summer I met Matthew.

A. was made fun of at campB. was encouraged by many people at camp

C. was a blind boy who was very lonelyD. brought much pleasure to other kids at camp

38. Why does the author never forget the summer?

A. He learned a lot from Matthew.B. He had a lot of fun at camp.

C. He and Matthew had much in common.D. He got a very rewarding job.

Stars should be banned from promoting junk food, a leading medical journal said.

The journal, The Lancet, suggested stars’ endorsement (代言) of junk food is contributing to high rates of obesity, particularly among children. It called on ministers to introduce laws to ban the practice. The call came just one day after members of Parliament also hit out at stars who promote junk food. The Commons Health Committee said stars who promote junk food should reconsider their deals.

A recent report by the government’s Food Standards Agency warned that levels of obesity are increasing sharply. The report highlighted how junk food is contributing to the problem.

The Lancet criticized stars for promoting junk food. “One of the most invidious (引起不滿的) techniques used by junk-food advertisers is to pay sports and pop stars to endorse junk food—especially strange since sports stars need a properly balanced diet to achieve fitness.”

It singled out the BBC for criticism, attacking the decision to allow the children’s television characters, the Tweenies, to link up with the McDonald’s fast food chain.

The Lancet said laws are needed to prevent stars from promoting junk food. “Stars’ endorsement of junk food has to be banned,” it said.

However, the Food and Drink Federation defended the practice.

“The use of stars in advertisements is a perfectly legitimate (合法的) practice by responsible companies and we would defend the right of companies to use them,” said a spokeswoman. “UK food and drink manufacturers have to obey a strict code of practice when advertising to children.”

Netmums, a web-based network run by parents for parents, is running a campaign against the promotion of junk food to children.

Co-founder Siobhan Freegard said, “We’re using our website to capture the opinions of parents, and make sure they get heard. Ads are blasted to us on TV between children’s programmes and children’s heroes smilingly tell them to enjoy fatty, salty foods. None of us want overweight, unhealthy kids. We want our children to eat healthy good food and grow up strong and fit.”

39. The underlined part “hit out at” in Paragraph 2 probably means “____”.

A. disapproved ofB. relied on

C. worked forD. cared about

40. Why was the BBC criticized by The Lancet?

A. It contained many advertisements for junk food.B. It allowed sports stars to advertise junk food.

C. It encouraged children to eat junk food.D. It advertised McDonald’s fast food.

41. What can we learn about from the text The Lancet?

A. It tried to make parents’ opinions about junk food heard.

B. It suggested that stars should have a balanced diet.

C. It asked UK companies to obey a strict rule when advertising to children.

D. It suggested that laws be needed to prevent stars from promoting junk food.

42. Which of the following supported stars’ promotion of junk food?

A. Netmums.B. The Commons Health Committee.

C. The Food and Drink Federation.D. The government’s Food Standards Agency.

One of the last West Coast homes of the Monarch butterfly, a type of insect, may soon disappear. Strangely, it is in a town that calls itself Butterfly USA, Pacific Grove, California.

The town of Pacific Grove loves the butterflies. Every year they have a parade (游行) and hundreds of children dress up as butterflies. Monarch butterflies are the town mascot. Tourism is very important, and many people come to see the butterflies. The butterflies are good for the development of the town.

In 1981 there were so many butterflies that it looked like it was raining butterflies. Tens of thousands of Monarchs stayed on tree branches near Pacific Grove. Now there are not so many. The building goes on a little bit at a time, and you don’t notice it day by day. Over time, you can see that there has been a lot of development. As new buildings go up, many trees are cut down. This reduces the natural homes for the butterflies.

Monarchs travel hundreds of miles each year, returning to the same woods, often to the same trees. The female Monarchs need milkweed to lay their eggs; the males will follow the females.

Millions of Monarchs have traveled regularly along the same path for thousands of years. They start their trip in the mountains of Mexico and travel to the middle part of America. If the woods where the butterflies live are destroyed, the whole species (物種) could be lost. There have been Monarch butterflies along the coast of California for as long as man can remember, but no one is sure how much longer they will last.

43. Why are Monarch butterflies important to Pacific Grove?

A. They may disappear.B. They come to stay every year.

C. They help develop the town’s tourism.D. They give a name to Pacific Grove.

44. The underlined word “mascot” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to “____”.

A. a new type of butterflyB. an animal believed to bring good luck

C. a parade organized by Pacific GroveD. a special dress for children in Pacific Grove

45. What problem do Monarch butterflies face now?

A. New buildings take up their living space.B. There has been too much rain in recent years.

C. Their natural homes are destroyed by tourism.D. They have to travel a long distance to get home.

46. Where do Monarch butterflies start their trip to Pacific Grove?

A. From Central America.B. From the West Coast.

C. From California.D. From Mexico.

Living happily for ever needn’t only be for fairy tales. Australian researchers have identified what it takes to keep a couple together, and it’s a lot more than just being in love.

A couple’s ages, previous relationships and even whether they smoke or not are factors that influence whether their marriage is going to last, according to a study by researchers from the Australian National University.

The study, entitled “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, tracked nearly 2,500 couples—married or living together—from 2006 to 2013 to identify factors associated with those who remained together compared with those who divorced (離婚) or separated.

It found that a husband who is nine or more years older than his wife is twice as likely to get divorced as husbands who get married before they turn 25.

Children also influence the longevity (壽命) of a marriage or relationship, with one-fifth of couples who have kids before marriage—either from a previous relationship or in the same relationship—having separated compared to just 9 percent of couples without children born before marriage.

Women who want children much more than their partners are also more likely to get a divorce.

A couple’s parents also have a role to play in their own relationship, with the study showing 16 percent of men and women whose parents ever separated or divorced experienced separation themselves compared to 10 percent for those whose parents did not separate.

Also, partners who are on their second or third marriage are 90 percent more likely to separate than married couples who are both in their first marriage.

Not surprisingly, money also plays a role, with up to 16 percent of respondents who showed they were poor or where the husband—not the wife—was unemployed saying they had separated, compared with only 9 percent of couples with healthy finances.

And couples where one partner, and not the other, smokes are also more likely to have a relationship that ends in failure.

Factors which were found not to significantly affect separation risk included the number and age of children born to a married couple, the wife’s employment rate and the number of years the couple had been employed.

The study was together written by Dr Rebecca Kippen and Professor Bruce Chapman from the Australian National University, and Dr Peng Yu from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Local Affairs.

47. Who wrote the study “What’s Love Got to Do with It”?

A. Dr Rebecca Kippen alone.

B. The Australian National University.

C. Dr Rebecca Kippen and Professor Bruce Chapman.

D. Dr Rebecca Kippen, Professor Bruce Chapman and Dr Peng Yu.

48. How many couples were surveyed during the research?

A. About 2006.B. About 2013.

C. About 2500.D. About 4000.

49. Which factors influence people’s marriage according to the study?

A. The couple’s ages and hobbies.B. The couple’s hobbies and relationships.

C. The couple’s ages and previous relationships.D. The financial conditions of their parents.

50. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. A husband nine or more years older than his wife divorces more easily.

B. Only 9% couples will divorce if they don’t have a kid after marriage.

C. That money also plays a role in a couple’s relationship surprises people.

D. The age and number of children and the wife’s employment rate greatly influence a couple.

Diane Arbus is known for creating intense black and white photographs of very unusual people. She used a special camera that produced square shaped images. One art expert said Diane Arbus turned photography inside out. Instead of looking at her subjects, she made them look at her.

Diane Arbus was born in 1923 to a wealthy family in New York City. After finishing high school at the age of 18, Diane married Allan Arbus. Mr Arbus worked in the advertising department of her father’s store.

It was Mr Arbus who gave Diane her first camera. Diane soon decided to take a class with the famous photographer Berenice Abbott. The Arbuses eventually started taking photographs of clothing. These images were used as advertisements for Diane’s father’s store. After the birth of their daughter, Doon, the Arbuses started a business together. Their purpose was to photograph clothing fashions. Diane Arbus was the stylist. She would prepare the hair and faces of the fashion models who wore the clothing being photographed. Allan Arbus took the pictures.

The couple soon had jobs from important fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Their work was very successful during the 1950s. They became part of a group of artists that were helping to redefine visual culture. They were breaking with past traditions to create a new look for a new decade, the sixties.

But Diane was not satisfied with her secondary role. She wanted a more active part in making photographs. She wanted to explore her own artistic expression and freedom. To do this, she stopped working with her husband. Then she started taking photography classes at the New School in New York City.

Diane’s teacher, Lisette Model, influenced her in many ways. She showed Diane how to use a camera like an expert. She also taught Diane to use her art to face her doubts and fears. Miss Model once said that Diane soon started “not listening to me but suddenly listening to herself.”

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually lasts only a few minutes or a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different kinds of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not need any special attention.

The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a certain situation, for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (長期的) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and being close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, such as friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share interests and activities with us. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal and healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous, condition.

39. How should you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?

A. Just ignore it.B. Talk to friends.

C. Go to see a doctor.D. Ask your teachers for guidance.

40. Which of the following can be the cause of situational loneliness?

A. Heart disease.B. Sleeplessness.

C. Social contacts.D. Changing work.

41. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to “____”.

In the past four months, a girl, who called herself “Lonelygirl15”, caught the attention of millions. Lonelygirl15 presented herself as a 16-year-old home-schooled American named Bree. Her blog on a popular video-sharing website recorded her disagreements with her parents and her boyfriend, and it attracted loads of fans to offer advice on dealing with her problems.

But last month, the lonely girl turned out to be a not-so-lonely young woman, who got two filmmakers, a lawyer, and a Hollywood talent agency behind her. “Bree” is really Jessica Rose, a 19-year-old actress from New Zealand. The whole thing was a hoax!

Several weeks ago some viewers started to become suspicious (懷疑的) of Lonelygirl15 and her blog. They found Lonelygirl15’s videos seemed a little too perfect, that she looked a little too old, and that her room seemed a little too neat for a teenager. The mystery was later shown.

So what’s the story? The filmmakers said it was just a creative project. They took the Internet as a new way for independent filmmakers to distribute their work and find new audience. Lonelygirl15 got people talking about what’s real and what’s unreal, and it drew even more people after the truth was revealed.

On the web it’s often hard to tell what you’re really seeing and reading. People can pretend to be just about anything they want to be. Some fans were angry at the lonely girl who had deceived (欺騙) them. One of the disappointed fans said, “The creators (of Lonelygirl15) did this without any thought of how it was going to affect the community, and I think that’s really sad.” Some other fans, however, didn’t seem to care. They posted words like “Unreal or not, you guys are brilliant!”

The blog has been moved to Bree’s own website: Lonelygirl15.com, where the story will continue.

Perhaps the most famous theory, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks—we are not born with them. A baby has generally unformed face features (特征). A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows (眉毛) by looking at those around—family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the United States look so much alike. New Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that cannot be explained by genetics (遺傳學). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed well until new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United States, for example, the South is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many Southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other less in public than people do in small towns.
