A Stylistic Analysis of Dhundrup Gyal’s Poem： The Waterfall of Youth

【Abstract】In this article， stylistic techniques and methods are used for the stylistic analysis of Dundrup Gyals poem “ The Waterfall of Youth ” The analysis is made under the aspects of phonologically， graphlogically， grammatically， syntactically and semantically patterns.This analysis is helpful in understanding the basic concept of poem that is about the youth of Tibet.

INTRODUCTION TO THE POEM“THE WATERFALL OF YOUTH” AND THE THEME OF THE POEM

This poem was written in 1980s， since then Tibet has come to an new era， and her people， the young generation of Tibet as well as her rich culture and language were facing new challenges.While protecting and carrying forward her culture and language， the responsibilities had landed on the shoulders of the young generation of Tibet.Therefore in this poem， the poet using lots of images of nature to symbolize the richness of Tibets culture and language， and the fearless courage of the young generation of Tibet.Here also comes the theme of the poem： like the waterfall， the youth of Tibet is fearless and they are ready to take the tasks and and taking Tibet to a new blossom.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter will provide a stylistic analysis of the poem The Waterfall of Youth.The lexico-syntactic patterns and choices， phonological， graphological and morphological levels of analysis are going to form the basis of the analysis.

PHONOLOGICAL LEVEL

This poem is free verse.It does not use consistent meter patterns， rhyme， or any other musical pattern.It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.

GRAPHOLOGICAL LEVEL

i） The poem is written as a whole.

ii）There is usual capitalization.

iii） We can see the use of punctuation in the poem.

For example： full stop， comma， apostrophe and exclamation mark is used in this poem.

LEXIO-SYNTACTIC LEVEL

The poet used many nouns and adjectives in this poem for describing the nature as well as the poets strong feelings.

Epizeuxis：

For example：

The clear blue sky…

Above line is an example of epizeuxis， the repetition of the same word or phrase without any break at all， it is used to maintain a permanent effect on the reader/hearer and also for emphasis.

Personification：

The sound of the gushing water， clear and pleasing，

In the above line， the poet invested abstractions and inanimate objects with human qualities， he did this to stir the emotions of his reader.

ANALYSIS CONCLUSION

3.1 Conclusion.The choice of words by the writer or the poet plays a very important role in meaning making.It helps the reader to understand the message the poet is trying to pass on.Stylistics， by this analysis has shown that there is a distinction between poetic and non- poetic language as a means of defining literature.Using stylistic devices to analyze a poem is a very practical when you analyze a poem.

3.2 Pedagogical Implications.The ultimate aim of this work is to explore how the language is using in the poem and it is also aimed at generally analyzing the poem by using stylistics devices.The effects and functions of the stylistic elements as regards the poem will be looked at in the analysis.

3.3 Scope of The Study.This work shall be exclusively stylistic， and analysis will be conducted through the use of the following levels of analysis： lexico-syntactic patterns and choices， phonology， graphology and morphology.Analysis will be conducted using the stylistic elements in each of the above mentioned levels of analysis， such that it could provide a guide and be relevant to future researchers in a related field.

3.4 Limitations of The Study.The time is too short to deal properly with the analysis of the poem.The material is not as much as it should be.
