China Pictorial 2015年8期

July 13, Hong Kong: “Ten Thousand Galloping Horses United with One Heart,” an installation art and education project based on renowned Chinese painter Xu Beihongs iconic image of the galloping horses, goes on display at Terminal 2 of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Xu created the famous Six Galloping Horses in 1942 to symbolize himself and his good friends.

This year marks the airports 17th anniversary. From July to December, travelers using HKIA will embark journey of art and culture before even boarding their flights. Hosted by the Airport Authority Hong Kong, “Hong Kong Classics: Art, Culture and Music” was unveiled at HKIA on July 6: six months of artistic programs that reflect the variety and richness of the citys multiculturalism. “Ten Thousand Galloping Horses United with One Heart” is just one of these programs. Other exhibitions and activities include “Voyage of Discovery,” “Above the Clouds,” and “Long Live Cantopop.” IC

Hello, Pluto!

July 16, Liaocheng City, Shandong Province: Amateur astronomers from Liaocheng University take creative photos with “Pluto.” On July 14, NASAs New Horizons spacecraft from the New Frontiers program gave humankind the first-ever close-up images and scientific data of distant Pluto and its system of large and small moons.

The fastest spacecraft ever launched, New Horizons travels at a speed of around 10 miles per second. It has traveled a longer time and farther than any previous mission in the history of space travel: more than nine years and 30 billion miles. Pluto, the largest known body in the Kuiper Belt, features a nitrogen atmosphere, complex seasons, distinct surface markings, an ice-rock interior that could harbor an ocean, and at least five moons. Cultural Relics Return to China

July 20, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province: A visitor enjoys the special exhibition held to commemorate the return of 32 cultural relics. That day, 32 relics stolen from ancient Chinese tombs and held by French collectors were formally handed over to the Gansu Provincial Museum. The move marked the first time cultural relics were successfully returned to China following bilateral negotiations between Chinese and French governments.

The 32 pieces were discovered in tombs in Dabaozishan in Lixian County, Gansu Province, dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 B.C.- 476 B.C.). The tombs were looted during the 1990s and a large number of relics were smuggled abroad. Earlier this year, these cultural relics were returned by private French collectors Francois Pinault and Christian Deydier. The exhibition will last until October 31, free of charge. Afterwards, these pieces will remain permanently on display at the Gansu Provincial Museum. Fan Peikun/Xinhua

Its 11 events were divided across three categories: RoboCup Soccer, RoboCup Rescue, and RoboCup Service.

Calm after Storm

July 17, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province: A Chinese investor checks share prices at a brokerage. After plunging over 30 percent from its June 12 peak, Chinas key stock index staged a strong rebound on the back of a raft of government support measures.

Before the market took a downturn on June 12, the Shanghai composite had risen by 152 percent since July 2014 and nearly 60 percent since the beginning of the year.

Fearing the market rout could threaten overall financial stability, the Chinese government stepped in with various measures to save the market, including pouring in funds and restricting futures trading on a major small-cap index. However, despite the eyecatching rebound in the last a few days, analysts predict the market will fluctuate and struggle in the near future as it takes time to disperse market panic and rebuild confidence. 7% GDP Growth

June 22, Yinchuan, Ningxia: Employees of a textile factory at work. According to Chinas National Bureau of Statistics, Chinas 7.0 percent gross domestic product (GDP) year-on-year growth in the second quarter exceeded market predictions. Analysts believe this signifies the country is on track for the goal of an annual 7 percent GDP growth in 2015.

Julian Evans-Pritchard, China economist at Capital Economics, believes that two factors contribute to the dynamic growth. “The first, and most widely overlooked factor, is the impact of surging stock market turnover on brokerage activity, which counts as part of the service sector,” explained Pritchard. “The second reason is the growing evidence of a recovery in the wider economy.”

According to HSBCs global research team, both Chinas GDP growth and June economic activity data greatly exceeded expectations, driven by faster growth in the services sector, infrastructure investment, and property sales. Wang Peng/Xinhua

Fancy Fireflies

July 20, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province: Fireflies at Linggu Scenic Spot. China is home to about 100 species of fireflies. In recent years, as fireflies have gone extinct in cities, their numbers has witnessed a steady decrease in rural areas, and even deep in mountains and forests. Light, noise, and hunting by human all contribute to the situation, jeopardizing fireflies fertility and living space. Tens of thousands of fireflies inhabit Linggu Scenic Spot on Nanjings Purple Mountain, which is rare in cities.

To protect fireflies habitat, the scenic spot has adopted a number of measures including an around-the-clock ban on vehicles from July 20 and special zones in densely-populated firefly areas in hopes of protecting the beautiful road for fireflies in Nanjing. IC
