Monty was the son of a horse trainer. When he was in his ninth grade, he was asked to write a 1 about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

That night he wrote a seven-page paper saying that someday hed 2 a horse ranch (牧場). He wrote about his dream in great detail and he 3 drew a picture of a 200-acre ranch with all the buildings.

He put a great deal of his 4 into the project and the next day he handed it in 5 his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a 6 that read, “See me after class.”

The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “ 7 did I receive an F?”

The teacher said, “This is an 8 dream for a young boy like you. You come from a poor family. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of 9 . You have to buy the land. You have to pay for other things. There is no 10 you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “ 11 you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”

The boy went home and thought about 12 long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important 13 for you.”

My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didnt know. How wrong we were!Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our opinions.

Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: Wheres the silent woman who sits up front and never responds to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesnt have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.

We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, theyre still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape confirmed that shed delivered the child. We even felt a little pride at the thought of our extended family.

For many months, our only sadness lay in our inability to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus.

We greeted her with friendly familiarity wed shown all the year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped awkwardly from her lips. All at once we realized why she hadnt spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.

Over dinner, we learned the stay of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him desperately, she explained.

“I love him... and he loves me, even though he doesnt express it very well,” she murmured. “Lots of us have that problem, dont we? We dont say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And thats not good enough.”

The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. But the atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we parted as friends—we shared names.

Im here today because I have something important to discuss with you. Im here because I want to talk with you about your education and whats expected of all of you in this new school year.

Now, Ive given a lot of speeches about education. And Ive talked about responsibility a lot. Ive talked about teachers responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn. Ive talked about your parents responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and dont spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox. Ive talked a lot about your governments responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that arent working, where students arent getting the opportunities that they deserve. But at the end of the day, we can have the most knowledgeable teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world—and none of it will make a difference unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. Thats what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.

I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that youre good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. Thats the opportunity an education can provide.

Maybe you could be a great writer—maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper, but you might not know it until you write that English paper. Maybe you could be an inventor—maybe even good enough to come up with the next iphone or the new medicine, but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor—but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

( )11. What type of writing is the passage?

A. An ad. B. A letter. C. A speech. D. A message.

( )12. Which job is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Lawyer. B. Writer. C. Inventor. D. Mayor.

( )13. The underlined word “knowledgeable” probably means _____.

A. wise B. special C. strict D. patient

( )14. What will probably be talked about in paragraph 5 that follows?

A. You have to know what you want to be when you grow up.

B. Whatever you want to do with your life, youll need an education to do it.

C. No matter what you do, you should work hard on it.

D. The government, your teachers and your parents will give you a lot of help.

( )15. Which may be the best title?

A. The Responsibility of Teachers, Parents and Students.

B. The Beginning of the New School Year.

C. The Importance of Education.

D. The Responsibility Each of the Students Has for His Education.

It was a sunny winter day. I had gone down the tower when a blind man came toward me. He kept close to the wall, touching it lightly with his hand. I s 1 still and looked at him walking toward the tower. “What does a blind man want to climb up the tower for?” I w 2 , “Not the view certainly, perhaps he wants to jump.” Thinking of this terrible reason, I thought I should f 3 him.

He went up slowly and stopped from time to time. I followed him a few steps behind. When he got to the first corner of the bell tower, I came c 4 to him. “Excuse me,” I said as politely as I could, “but I wonder why you came up.” “Youd never g 5 ,” he said.

“Tell me, then,” he smiled, “Perhaps climbing up the tower. You have n 6 —and yet, not being blind, perhaps you wont—how the sun shines into the tower through the windows, so that one can feel the cool steps suddenly become quite w 7 , even in winter. But behind the wall there is shade. There is no place so good as this for f 8 the difference between light and darkness. Though Im blind, I also want to feel the happiness brought by the sunlight.” He said and seemed as p 9 as a child.

I had never thought that even a blind man could have his way to enjoy the beautiful life. But we often paid no attention to its value because we never lost it.

We went down the tower t 10 . From then on, I began to treasure what life has given me.
