Plants are chemical factories. Many of the chemicals that they produce are useful to humans. Besides food, plants provide material for paper, buildings, medicines, and many others. Scientists study the chemicals to treat certain types of cancer.

On the other hand, the fast growth of the human population is changing the earth quickly. Only by understanding how human activities affect our environment can we predict global climate changes. Scientific studies of these changes and their effects on natural ecosystems and crop production are of great importance to the future of our society.

Other environmental problems, such as pollution, also interest scientists. Many plant species are especially sensitive to certain pollutants. Scientists study the effects of different types of pollution on plants. They use their results to advise lawmakers to make laws for environmental protection and to save priceless natural areas.

The earths biological diversity (多樣性) or the kinds of living things are decreasing. As humans change the environment for their own purposes, plants and animals living in these areas become increasingly endangered. Scientists work to identify (辨別) and understand new plant species, especially in such biologically rich areas as rainforests. Perhaps a plant undiscovered now will become an important food crop. There are probably many undiscovered plants that produce useful drugs to cure or treat human disease. Biological diversity also provides an important source of new genes to improve the plants we now use. As techniques of genetic engineering improve, so will our ability to improve our plants.

21. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Plants can be used to treat certain types of cancer.

B. Plants can offer people many necessary materials.

C. Plants can be made into many products in factories.

D. Plants can produce many chemicals needed in chemical factories.

22. What can we learn from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?

A. Pollution does little harm to many plants.

B. Human activities influence plants greatly.

C. It is global climate changes that endanger plants.

D. Scientific studies on plant species are important to stop pollution.

23. What is the importance of biological diversity?

A. It can create as many plants as possible.

B. It has many possible values to human beings.

C. We can have new species to replace the old ones.

D. People will use it to cure or treat human diseases.

24. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Plants and Humans

B. The Chemical Factories

C. Finding New Plant Species

D. New Genes to Improve the Plants

B

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you knew was in trouble—and was he? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP (特異功能). ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.

Heres an example. A woman was ironing clothes. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then, a call came. The womans father died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.

There are thousands of stories like this one on record. Scientists are studying them to find out whats behind these strange mental messages. Heres another example—one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.

A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “Theres room for one more.” The man felt the driver seemed dead, so he ran away. The next day, when the man was getting on a crowded bus, the bus driver said, “Theres room for one more.”

Then the man saw that the drivers face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldnt get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!

Some people say stories like these are coincidences. Others, including some scientists, say that ESP is real. From studies of ESP, we may someday learn more about the human mind.

25. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Some people believe ESP is real.

B. More women have the sixth sense than men.

C. Scientists think the stories mentioned are not true.

D. A man with the sixth sense will know about his future.

26. What is the purpose of scientists studying ESP?

A. To learn how people tell lies.

B. To know more about human mind.

C. To know more about human dreams.

D. To learn how strange things happen.

27. In the last paragraph the underlined word “coincidences” probably means “____.”

A. things that must happen

B. things that may not happen

C. things that happen in a dream

D. things that happen by accident

根據短文內容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Human wants seem endless. 31 When an executive gets a new car, he is intending to purchase a new house.

The many wants of mankind can be concluded as several levels. 32 The most basic level involves food. Once this is satisfied, a second level appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. 33 It included items such as automobiles and new houses. After this level was well satisfied a fourth level of wants appeared: the life-enriching level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction—the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body—this one stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services which are luxury items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 34 On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. 35 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

A. Then a third level appeared.

B. There are several levels of wants in ones life.

C. Different people have different wants on each level.

D. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in

clothing.

E. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an

overcoat.

F. At this stage, we now may seek to ensure health, safety, and

leisure.

G. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants,

another level appears.
