01. 408 million trips during Lunar New Year holiday
February 3, 2017 (Xinhua) — The week-long Spring Festival holiday witnessed 408 millon passenger trips in China, up 2.1 percent year on year, according to the data from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) showed Friday. Between January 27 and February 2, the number of road trips totaled 336 million, a 0.8 percent increase from last year, while train trips reached 52 million with an annual increase of 8.8 percent. The average distance traveled was 262 km as most trips were intra-province and 87.8 percent of the trips were within a range of 500 km, MOT data showed. Nearly 80 percent of the travels were for visits to relatives and friends, as the festival is the most important occasion for family reunions.
02. Laos in bid to attract more Chinese tourists
February 10, 2017 (Xinhua) — Laos has been seeking to attract more Chinese tourists after noticing the large number of Chinese people who travel overseas and the large sum of money they spend, local media reported on Friday. “Laos should target more Chinese tourists because they are high-end customers and spend a lot,” Lao state-run Vientiane Times on Friday quoted Lao Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Bosengkham Vongdara as saying at an annual meeting of the information, culture and tourism sector held recently in capital Vientiane. According to the statistics from the ministry’s tourism sector, China ranked third in terms of the number of people visiting Laos in 2016. Some 399,556 Chinese nationals came to Laos from January to September in 2016. In 2011, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Laos was recorded at 150,791 people and the fi gure has steadily increased since then.

03. Chinese smartphone producer Xiaomi launches Indonesian version
February 10, 2017 (Xinhua) — Chinese prominent smartphone producer Xiaomi initiated the production in its Indonesian plant, aimed at complying with Indonesia’s local content adoption obligation. Xiaomi’s Indonesian production was declared in an event themed “We are made in Indonesia” held in a lavish hotel here on Friday, attended by the firm’s executives, senior government officials and Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Xie Feng. Operating its production facility located in Indonesia’s Batam industrial zone, Xiaomi embraces local partners, that is, Erajaya Swasembada, Sat Nusapersaada and TSM Technologies. Addressing the event, Xiaomi Senior Vice President Wang Xiang said that initializing its production in Indonesia is a proof of the importance of the Indonesian market to Xiaomi.

04. China to increase protection of immovable cultural relics
February 13, 2017 (Xinhua) — The State Administration of Cultural Heritage plans to step up preservation of immovable cultural relics amid rapid urbanization. “Immovable cultural relics should be avoided as much as possible in the choosing of construction sites,” according to a circular issued by the administration. The circular clarified procedures for the removal of immovable cultural relic status, and said that authorities should review and establish whether they still had heritage value, if such cultural relics were destroyed by natural disasters or construction activity. Authorities should also publish such information and solicit public opinion. More efforts will be made to protect poorly-preserved immovable cultural relics through government support. China is home to more than 760,000 registered immovable cultural relics, according to a national archaeological survey in 2011.
05. China to launch world’s largest carbon market soon
February 16, 2017 (China Daily) — China’s national emissions trading system (ETS) is expected to be launched in the near term, creating the world’s largest carbon market, the 21stCentury Business Herald reported. By the end of this year, there will be 19 carbon trading systems in operation worldwide covering nearly 7 billion tons of emissions, according to a report from the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP). China has already launched seven pilot regional carbon trading markets in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangdong, Shenzhen, Hubei and Chongqing since 2013. As of December 31, 2016, the cumulative trading volume in the seven pilot markets reached 160 million tons, worth nearly 2.5 billion yuan, according to a report by the China Beijing Environment Exchange and the Beijing Emission Trading Association.
06. Chinese-developed electric power achievements in Cambodia displayed
February 16, 2017 (Xinhua) — An exhibition on the Chinesedeveloped electric power achievements in Cambodia kicked off on Thursday, with an aim of promoting the importance and advantages of electric power for socio-economic development. Cambodian Minister of Mines and Energy Suy Sem and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Xiong Bo jointly opened the two-week fair, which was held in the complex of the Royal University of Phnom Penh. “It is vital to raise awareness of hydroelectric power plants and their advantages for social and economic development by making good use of the exhibition,” said Suy Sem. The minister said Chinese companies had invested in seven hydroelectric power plants in Cambodia in the past decade. Six of them were operational, producing a total of 928 megawatts, while the seventh one, Lower Sesan II hydropower plant, with the capacity of 400 megawatts, was under construction.

07. China offers emergency aid to quakehit Philippines
February 16, 2017 (Xinhua) — The Chinese government will offer US$ 1 million emergency humanitarian aid to quakehit Philippines, an official statement said late Wednesday. China hopes that the assistance will help relief work after an earthquake struck a southern Philippines province last week, according to an online Ministry of Commerce statement. A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Surigao city in the southern Philippines last Friday night, killing at least seven and injuring more than 100. Infrastructure facilities including airport and roads were damaged during the quake. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Tuesday that the Red Cross Society of China would offer US$ 50,000 to the Philippines for relief work, adding that the Foreign Minister Wang Yi had conveyed sympathy to his counterpart in the Philippines.

08. China eases restrictions on stock index futures trading
February 17, 2017 (Xinhua) — The Shanghai-based China Financial Futures Exchange (CFFEX) announced late Thursday that it was easing restrictions on domestic stock index futures trading in a “sound and orderly” way. It will double the maximum limit on daily stock index future trading from 10 lots to 20 lots from Friday. Hedging transactions will be excluded from this restriction. The CFFEX will also reduce margin requirements for non-hedging transactions on Hushen 300 index futures and SSE 50 index futures from 40 percent of the contract value to 20 percent from Friday’s clearing, while that for CSI 500 index futures will be cut to 30 percent. The margin requirement for hedging transactions will be kept at 20 percent. Commission fees for intra-day position-closing will be lowered to 0.092 percent of the transaction volume from the previous 0.23 percent.
