What will man be like in the future 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now on? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is like today. For man is slowly changing all the time.

Let us take a clear example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now on average, man is about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may imagine that man will continue to grow taller.

Again, in the modern world we use our brain a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brains capacity (容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more—and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in frequent use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that mans eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether sometime because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women are likely to be bald (禿頭的)!

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may be true. All the same, even though with these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

Theres more to learning math than paying attention in class, according to recent research. It shows that kids math performance may be better for those with a natural gift for sensing numbers.

Scientists showed a number of dots (小圓點) for a very short time—some blue, others red—and asked someone to determine which group of dots was more. The dots appear and disappear so quickly that it becomes impossible to count, so the numbers have to be sensed instead.

In the experiment, researchers studied 174 children between 3 and 5 years of age to judge their ANS (the Approximate Number System) with computer tests. Then they judged childrens math and verbal (口頭的) skills through a lot of tests and asking parents to list common words in their childrens vocabulary.

Allowing for age, vocabulary size and speed of taking the test, the group still found better ANS scores to be connected with childrens early math abilities. In the past it was thought to be the result of different teaching styles, but this connection seems to already exist before kids start formal math education in school.

However, the authors of the paper admit they cannot use ANS to predict math ability easily. They said that they could not control other parts of learning, which may also have an effect.

For the past 50 years, scientists have scoured the skies for radio signals from beyond our planet, hoping for some sign of extraterrestrial (外星球的) life.

Paul Davies, an award-winning Arizona State University physicist known for his popular science writing said that life may have developed on Earth not once but several times. Davies said some life forms—most likely tiny microbes (微生物) —could still be hanging around “right under our noses, or even in our noses”.

The idea that alien micro-organisms could be hiding out here on Earth has been discussed for a while, according to Jill Tarter, the director of the US SETI project, which listens for signals from civilizations based around distant stars. She said several of the scientists involved in the project were interested in discussing the opinion, which Davies earlier laid out in a 2007 article published in Scientific American in which he asked, “Are aliens among us?” So far, theres no answer. And its difficult to find such an alien, as Davies himself acknowledged.

Unusual organisms exist, including chemical-eating bacteria (細菌) which hide out deep in the ocean and organisms that live in boiling hot springs, but that doesnt mean theyre different life forms entirely. Davies suggested that the only way to prove an organism wasnt “life as we know it” was if it was built using exotic elements which no other form of life had.

Such organisms have yet to be found. Davies also pointed that less than 1% all the worlds bacteria had been studied—leaving plenty of time to find unusual organisms.

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.

If you come to visit, youll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN (個人身份號碼) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are.
