Ambassador Sequi's residence in Beijing is redolent of a museum. It contains some of his favourite collections, such as the 1000 exquisite masks that he collected from Venice, Italy.

The fi rst fl oor of the ambassador's residence is split into fi ve sections, which contains a study, a cloakroom for the guests, a long hall leading to a banquet room and a dining room. The much higher ceiling of the latter two rooms creates a sense of grandness coupled with an enormous French window letting in warm sunshine.

It is a pity that Mr. Sequi doesn't get to enjoy that ambience very much – his time is snapped up from early in the morning till late at night. On the day of our interview, which was planned months ahead, an unscheduled meeting came up, and Mr. Sequi had to get up even earlier than usual for a stretched day ahead. Things like this probably aren't rare.

With no time for small talk, Ambassador Sequi still managed to make jokes while changing poses in front of the camera. His smile and spontaneous manners make the job not only easier but also more than enjoyable.

Ambassador Sequi has a great Chinese name– Xie Guoyi, which literally means “friendship between countries”. This name carries with it his fundamental priorities since he took the appointment in July, 2015 – that is, to upgrade the bilateral relations between Italy and China.

During his term so far, Italy and China has celebrated the 45th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2015, and has launched the “Road to 50”, i.e. the new “fi ve-year strategy” that will lead the two countries to the 50th anniversary of their friendship.

Apart from improving the two countries' friendship, Ambassador Sequi has also shouldered a special task – to help Italy create “a fresh new look” in China. He wants to remind China that Italy not only enjoys a long history, a world-known fashion and cuisine industry, but also a strong technological innovation capacity, as well as a solid industrial sector, which, in Europe, is second only to Germany.

“Collaborations will be made between Italian and Chinese companies, which will spur new bilateral industrial partnerships, eventually also in third countries, where the interests of Italy and China, together with Chinese government's strategies of 'go global' and the 'New Silk Road' could converge,” said the ambassador.

Ahead of this urbane Italian, who is always able to remain composed regardless of how tight his schedule is, lie his great expectations of the two countries: “Road to 50”.

意大利駐華大使 Ettore Francesco Sequi有個極妙的中文名——“謝國誼”。這三個字不僅與他的意大利姓“Sequi”有著相似的讀音，而且寓意頗佳。正是抱著進一步加深中意兩國友誼的目標，謝國誼來到了中國。

上任后，大使見證了 2015 年中意建交 45 周年紀念，啟動了中意“通向50年之路”計劃，即新的“五年戰略”，以迎接 2020 年中意建交 50 周年。

除了肩負鞏固兩國友好關系的重任外，謝國誼大使還身負一個特殊任務——向中國展示一個“嶄新的意大利形象”。他力圖告訴中國，意大利不僅有著悠久的歷史及享譽世界的時尚產業和餐飲服務業，而且擁有強大的科技創新能力和在歐洲范圍內僅次于德國的工業。

“中意企業將加強合作，創造新的雙邊產業合作機遇，并配合中國政府提出的‘走出去’和‘新絲路’等戰略，將合作范圍延伸至中意有著共同利益的第三國。”

說罷，他露出了羅馬春風般的“外交官式微笑”。擺在這位任何情況下都能夠保持從容鎮定、溫文儒雅的大使面前的，是寄托了中意兩國關系偉大前程的“通向 50 年之路”。

N: Italy has the most World Heritage sites on earth. It has 51 inscribed properties, followed by China with 50. As a country that has done so well with heritage conservation, what valuable knowledge can Italy share with China?

S: We can share a lot in terms of technological skills for preservation and restoration of historical buildings and sites, but also in terms of shaping a new urban architecture able to match with the previous heritage. This requires matching together urban planning and industrial research in order to fi nd new materials that can better face the injuries of time. This is why we launched the “UNESCO sites twinning program”, a truly innovative project of twinnings between Italian and Chinese World Heritage Sites.

N: A few months ago, several Chinese police officers were sent out to patrol in Rome and Milan as part of a two-week experimental project. How did that experiment go? What kind of impact will it have on Italy's tourism industry?

S: The project is an implementation of the International Cooperation Agreement between Italy and China. Italy is experiencing a signifi cant growth in Chinese tourists, with more than 1.4 million Chinese tourists visiting the country in 2015. The best facilitation a country can offer to welcome more tourists is effi ciency.

The impact was indeed positive: we immediately received media attention and positive feedback from Chinese tourists who felt more secure and at ease during their visit to Italy. Italy was the fi rst European country to introduce this project and we are very proud of this initiative. Now it's on the Italian police to come to China for the same period of time to joint patrol the most visited sites with the Chinese police.

Italy is particularly eager to open its doors to the Chinese friends. In my view, the best facilitation a country can offer to welcome more tourists is effi ciency. With this in mind in the last few years the Italian diplomatic network in China invested massively in order to provide not only effi cient and express services (i.e. tourism visas in 36 hours) but also more information on Italian alternative tourism destinations, with a view to encourage a diversifi cation of traditional holiday tours.

N: China Southern Airlines has recently opened a new route to Rome. Do you have some advice for us to help us improve our service onboard?

S: We are very happy for the launching of China Southern Airlines' fl ight connection between Rome and Guangzhou. This is precisely what we need to create more opportunities to promote our bilateral ties.

I can only wish for the future more connections with Italy, from other Chinese cities, and eventually specifi c on-board services in cooperation with Italian companies so as to “distinguish” the journey by making it more “Italian” from the very beginning.

N: Italian has become the 4th most studied language in the world. In China, there are nearly 20 universities that offer Italian as a major. What do you think of this recent trend? S: Italy is not only considered the cradle of European civilization, but also a safe country with a good social welfare system.

In the past, Italian was considered a language for“culture”, art and opera. Although English is a common language for fast communication, we have to stress the importance on other languages. President Xi, in his OBOR strategy, also mentions that no matter how many native speakers a language has, it still brings great contributions to the human civilization as a whole.

N：中國南方航空近期開通了一條廣州至羅馬的新航線。對于完善空中服務，您有什么建議？

S：我們很欣喜地看到南航開啟了廣州至羅馬的新航線。新航線可以為中意雙邊關系發展創造更多機遇，這正是我們需要的。

我希望將來有更多的中意城市之間實現通航，同時希望南航能與意大利本土公司合作，提供個性化的空中服務，并從一開始就加入更多的“意大利元素”，讓這一趟空中之旅變得“與眾不同”。

N：目前，意大利擁有 51處，數量居于全球第一位，中國則以 50處世界文化遺產緊隨其后。意大利的遺產保護工作做得如此出色，有什么寶貴經驗可與中國分享？

S：我們在兩個方面的豐富經驗是可與中國分享的，一個是文物建筑和歷史遺址的保護與修復，一個是新建城市建筑與文物建筑的相容相生。這也是為什么中國和意大利共同啟動了“聯合國教科文組織遺產地結對計劃”。在修復和保護過程中，我們必須緊密結合城市規劃和產業研發，找到可以更好應對時間創傷的新材料。另外，我們在發展可持續旅游方面的經驗也是可以拿出來分享的。可持續旅游強調在不破壞環境的前提下為當地人帶來福祉，同時強調為了子孫后代的幸福而保護環境。

N：幾個月前，中國派出數名警察前往意大利羅馬和米蘭參加巡邏任務，這是一個為期兩周的實驗項目的部分內容。該項目的進展情況如何？對意大利旅游業產生了什么影響？

S：這個項目是對中意跨國合作協議的一次具體落實。赴意大利旅游的中國游客人數增長迅速，僅 2015 年就達到 140 多萬人次。而任何一個國家要想促進旅游業的發展，接待更多游客，最好的辦法是提高服務效率。這次聯合警務巡邏將吸引更多中國居民赴意大利旅游，它本身也體現了我們對中國公民的重視。

毫無疑問的是，聯合警務巡邏項目產生了積極影響：項目從一開始就引起了媒體界的關注，我們也得到了不少中國游客的反饋，他們在意大利旅游期間感覺更安全、更放心了。意大利是歐洲第一個與中國開展這種警務合作的國家，我們對這一新的嘗試感到十分自豪。接下來，意大利也將派遣警察來中國，他們將與中國警察一道在中國最具人氣的旅游景點巡邏，時間也是兩周。

更多游客，最好的辦法是提高服務效率。所以意大利駐華外交機構在過去幾年中不惜大筆投入，提高服務效率（如 36 小時辦理旅游簽證），廣泛宣傳不一樣的意大利旅游目的地，目的就是要讓傳統度假旅行變得更加豐富多彩。

N：從學習人數上來說，意大利語已成為世界第四大語言。中國有近20所大學開設了意大利語專業。您如何看待這一新的趨勢？

S：意大利是歐洲文明的搖籃，也是一個有著穩定治安、良好社會福利制度的國家。

過去，人們把意大利語視為一門體現“文化”、進行藝術和戲劇創作的語言。雖然英語是全世界應用最廣泛的語言，但我們也不能忽視其他語種的重要性。習近平主席也把語言互通納入了“一帶一路”戰略，他認為無論使用一種語言的母語人口有多少，這種語言都會對人類文明這個整體作出重要貢獻。
