Mountains are like the rooftops of the world, their peaks soaring up into the clouds.

Slopes are steep and valleys are deep in the mountains. The higher you go, the colder it is, and the scarcer the vegetation becomes.

Movement beneath the surface forced the earth’s crust upwards to form mountains. This all happened millions of years ago.

Mountains like these are extinct volcanoes. They erupted a very long time ago. They may even erupt again one day.

Wind, frost and rain eat into the rocks, and produce the strange shapes of mountains.

Mountains can look very different in summer and winter.

In spring, melting snow swells the streams and the waterfalls. They go down into the valleys.

Mountains are home to a great number of animals. They survive well in the cold, the wind and the thin atmosphere.

To cross mountain ranges you need bridges, roads or tunnels and a good head for heights!

a head for sth. 的常見搭配是have a head for sth.。這里的head指的是“頭腦”，have a head for sth. 表示“在某方面有頭腦”，也就是“有某種才能，擅長某事”的意思。但如果一個人說：“I don’t have a head for heights”，就是說他“懼高，有恐高癥”。例如：
