◆ London Underground

There are 11 colour-coded Underground lines. Services run regularly from around 05：00 to 00：30 （Sunday 07：30 to 23：30） on most routes.

Tip：Always stand on the right when using the escalators （電動(dòng)扶梯） at Tube stations. It can get hot and busy on the Tube during peak travel times， so you may prefer to travel outside these hours.

◆ Buses

A cheap and easy way to travel around London. They generally run from 05：00 to 00：30. Night buses operate on many major routes from around midnight to 05：00， and some operate a 24-hour service.

It is not possible to pay for your London bus fare in cash. Instead you can pay with a Visitor Oyster card， Oyster card， Travelcard or UK-issued contactless payment card. A single bus journey is ￡1.50 with an Oyster card or UK-issued contactless payment card.

To help you get home， if you dont have enough credit on your Oyster card， you will be able to make one more bus journey.

After this you will need to top up the credit on your card before you use it again. If your contactless payment card has been issued outside the UK， please check tfl.gov.uk/contactless before you use your card to travel on our bus services. For any international transaction fees （手續(xù)費(fèi)） that may apply， please check with your card issuer.

Tip：Some bus routes are especially good for sightseeing — try routes 9， 14， 15 and 22. The New Routemaster bus featured in the James Bond film Skyfall and runs on routes 9， 11， 24， 38 and 390.

Standing in front of the “Chilkoot Trailhead” sign for 15 minutes， I didnt take one step. I was afraid of bears. Thats what was keeping me from walking the trail alone. I had hiked through black-bear country back home in Colorado， but now I was in Alaska， home to the fierce brown grizzly bear.

Fortunately， a friendly couple arrived and asked me to take their picture. We started talking and soon were walking the trail together. I was relieved. Ron and Carol were from Alaska and they taught me how to stay safe in bear country.

I had finally started my hike along the famous Chilkoot Trail， where more than 115 years ago， thousands of gold miners had walked. I was writing a book about the Klondike Gold Rush， and I wanted to follow in the footsteps of the miners to know what it was really like.

Ron， Carol， and I walked through the forest. As I was looking around at the beautiful scenery in the forest， I tripped （絆倒） over a big tree root and injured my ankle. Fortunately， my ankle felt better in the morning， and we followed the trail. We went to bed early that night because the following day would be the toughest hike of all.

At dawn， we started hiking up the steep， green valley. Icy glaciers covered the mountains above. Soon we were as high as the clouds and could see only 20 feet in front of us. Finally， we reached the top of the Chilkoot Pass and saw a Canadian flag moving in the heavy wind. Hours later， we arrived at our campground.

The following morning， my ankle was feeling fine， and my fear of bears had mostly disappeared. I said good-bye to Ron and Carol and walked alone for the next two days. Without seeing any bears the entire trip， I finally arrived at Bennett Lake. I rode the old train down to the town of Skagway and checked into my hotel.

While relaxing in my comfortable bed in the hotel， I thought of the miners from the Klondike Gold Rush. When the miners reached Bennett Lake， they had to cut down trees， build boats， and travel 500 miles down dangerous rivers and lakes. Then， when they finally reached the goldfields， they had to start digging.

Sunjit Patel is a designer with a well-known publishing company. He lives in South London， and for the last three years， he has been working from home. He prefers working from home because he can spend more time with his family and have a better work-life balance. Sunjit isnt alone： in Britain， there are 2.1 million people who work from home at present. In addition， about eight million people spend some time working in the home rather than in an office. This is almost twice as many as ten years ago.

This rapidly-growing trend towards working from home is the same in many countries. But what are the reasons for it？ The main reason is technological： easy access to broadband and the availa-bility of phone and video-conferencing. These make it possible for people to use their home as an office in an efficient and cost-effective way.

Other reasons for homeworking are the benefits to both employers and employees： office space is costly， so if an organisation can reduce its workstations， it may be able to move to a smaller site. Employees often work better at home： travelling to work can be a waste of time and tiring. Many homeworkers save a lot of time if they dont travel to work and they can start the day fresher and therefore work more efficiently； parents with young children appreciate the flexibility that homeworking allows and are more relaxed.

Sunjit Patel says， “I have been working from home since my son was born and have been really enjoying it. But I can tell you that homeworking requires special skills like self-discipline and time management. Ive known my boss and workmates for a long time now， which really helps because youve got to trust each other. You also need to have regular communication， by phone， email or video conferences， and you need to make regular trips to your office. Otherwise， you really miss out on the social side of work.”

Not everyone agrees with Sunjit though. “The only people who can work from home full-time are those who do an unnecessary job.” Fortunately for Sunjit and the 2.1 million like him， not many people think that way！

Bill Clinton， expresident of the United States， is a very popular speech giver and regularly gives talks all over the world， to many different audiences. He is so effective at giving talks because he has a special quality which we call “charisma（魅力）”.

Nowadays， psychologists are becoming very interested in charisma and want to redefine its meaning. People often misunderstand what charisma is and think of it as a kind of fame， but it is not the same as fame. Charisma is a kind of magic and is relatively rare. A well-known American psychologist thinks that charismatic people are basically excellent communicators.
