It is often called the trickiest item in a man's wardrobe and for good reason too. The hat is a tough fashion piece that can make or break an outfi t. American President John F. Kennedy, a.k.a. “Hatless Jack”, is said to have killed off the accessory in the 1960s – he was the fi rst president to attend his inauguration without wearing one. But hats are back and with summer fast approaching, you'll need something that's both stylish and good for keeping those harmful UV rays off your face.

The fedora was a favourite of such American icons as Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart and Gene Kelly. The suited up dandies of the silver screen created a classic style that's been tough to shake. These days it's been liberated as a casual accessory, something for which hip hop artist Pharrell Williams is primarily responsible for. In warmer climates stay away from a wool fedora, so you don't overheat and instead consider a felt or straw one. The fedora's tall, dented crown means it suits shorter guys or those with a bigger build, as it adds height, draws the eye upwards and elongates the frame.

THE PANAMA HAT 馬帽巴拿

The misleadingly named Panama hat is actually from Ecuador. Traditionally, they were made from the plaited leaves of the Carludovica Palmata plant, known locally as the Toquilla Palm. They are the go-to item for the wannabe travel writer and a functional, easy way to stand out from the crowd. With a black band, the Panama screams casual sophistication especially when coupled with a pair of Clubmaster Classic Ray-Bans and a white linen shirt. You'll be happy to know they have a strong ability to keep the sun off your face. Good for when you're writing your novel outside a caf? in Milan.

The fl at cap, also known as the newsboy cap, the cabbie or gatsby cap, has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years due to the popular BBC gangster series Peaky Blinders set in 1919. But, how does a man wear a fl at cap in summer 2017 without looking like a pensioner? Try dressing like an artist or if that's too vague try French actor and Gallic fashion icon Alain Delon. In terms of fi t, think along similar lines to the baseball cap, which shouldn't be too tight or have too much excess fabric that could cause unsightly bunching at the top of your head.
